Wow, that completely explains this heroin addiction.
Candy cigarettes are illegal because they encourage kids to smoke

That’s a gateway drug. They start with one of those after school and the next think you know they’re sniffing pixie sticks off the stomach of a janitor and selling grandma’s urn for a single Laffy Taffy.

It’s insane that we ban kinder eggs but don’t ban “baby’s first heroin needle”. This has to stop.

Literally called “Sweet Addiction”. LOL WTF.

Illegal where? I have to go to a novelty candy store in my area, because it’s the only place I can think of that sells them…but it’s legal here.
Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
It’s not illegal here, but sufficiently heavily discouraged and socially frowned upon that indeed, you have to look hard to find em.
Instead, we let 11 year olds order vapes from china now.
Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Ha ha ha, yeah. Not like when I was a kid in the 80s, and everybody smoked. Walls were just brown.
Just…all walls.
So glad that as generations went on, smoking habits have seemed to fall off a cliff.
Instead, we let 11 year olds order vapes from china now.
Wait, what?

This narrative has always confused me because they sit on the shelf at my Kroger

because it’s the only place I can think of that sells them…
Because they’re illegal to sell elsewhere 🤯
Waraugh@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 month ago
I can go to my Kroger and buy them right now though

I’m not sure it’s legal to call them candy cigarettes though - I’ve always seen them called something else. Yup, it’s illegal to call them cigarettes in the US, and they vary in legality elsewhere.
I only ever see them for sale in places that sell old fashioned candy, I think their decline has to do with the fact they just don’t taste very good (in addition to the changing cultural opinions about cigarettes, but I bet they’ve declined even in places where a large percentage of adults still smoke).

I bought a pack of candy cigarettes the last time I visited the US, just a couple years ago. I was so surprised that they are still being made.
GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 month ago
no longer sold as “candy”.
sold as a “novelty item”.
Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 1 month ago
They’re still sold here in Kansas as both. They also sell them as “candy sticks” in little packets with popular characters on it so everyone can talk about how they used to look like malboros.
watermelonpaloma@lemmy.sdf.org 4 weeks ago
Well, I found that ‘novelty item’ in the candy section of the corner shop.

Whereas vapes just fully supplant the habit and are a different kind of lung disease

Just like mommy! See, because one of the quickest ways to get treatment for heroin addiction is to get pregnant. I wonder if it’s a 2 digit percentage of births nationwide at this point.

Don’t let RFK Jr. see these or he’ll have them banned for encouraging vaccinations.
Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 1 month ago
You know what? I think I’ll go tell him exactly that! Use the stupid for good. Not only because kids should have to use their own initiative to get addicted to drugs, but it’s also too much plastic and sugar.
