I went to the ER the other day. I drove myself to the hospital, parked at the short-term car park right next to the ER (I was trying to make a beeline there, I really wasn’t concerned about where I parked). I expected to out within 2 or 3 hours but the hospital ended up keeping me for a week.

When I came out, I expected my car to be impounded, or at least covered in parking tickets. But no: there was only one with a warning and nothing to pay.

When I checked the case number on the ticket on the city’s parking fine webpage, the comment indicated “Driver reported hospitalized - fine waived.”

They actually checked with the hospital. Nice!

      see that’s society actually functioning.

Yes, nothing like coming out of a rough week alone in isolation in a hospital room, with friends and family not allowed to enter the room, and finding out the system sometimes makes small allowances for kindness and common sense. It sure felt great.

Small things like that give me back hope in humanity. Too bad they’re few and far between.

I’ve never understood how it can even be legal for hospitals to have parking fees for patients. It’s not like you became ill simply to take advantage of the parking situation so why are they charging people?

I had to go to hospital because of a seven tendon. Which I thought would probably be a quick fix but they were complications so it took forever and I had to get my girlfriend who had known for about 2 weeks at this point to move the car too long to stay. I did not consider ever the possibility that the parking people would just be reasonable

In the case of my local hospital, they do it because there are apartment complexes nearby and the residents used to abuse the hospital’s parking spot when they couldn’t find a spot in their residence.

Because assholes exist. If they don’t do it like this then some opportunistic pieces of shit will constantly occupy lots. Making the parking cost the same as everywhere else (or even cost more if allowed) is the only way to keep the parking spaces available for those who need them.

They can then waive the fee/fines on a case-to-case basis like what happened with OP.

If it is, it’s surprising they dismissed it instead of adding more charges, to be honest.

    White guy avi

    🙄

Was waiting in line to contest a ticket for dismal at one of the tiny micro-cities inside Houston. Kid you not, it was just a bunch of white folks walking out no-contest and another line of AAs getting filed up to actually try their cases.

I’m sure this was a coincidence. Also, the sheriff looking interchangeable with the Sheriff Rosco from Dukes of Hazzard, a pure coincidence.

Yeah this looks like a written appeal so not sure what race has to do with it

      source
      • pebbles@sh.itjust.works ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

If the appeal has a name on it then there could still be bias. Somewhat related: I heard job applications still got biased reviews with names redacted because the contents were culturally specific enough.

That might be true. But it’s important to note that we want the world to be more kind to everyone, and not universally unforgiving.

Is this even English cause I didn’t understand a single word.

      source
      • ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

Its perfectly clear, i can Rephrase it in midwest english:

I was at the courthouse in my neighborhood to try to get a ticket dismissed. You wouldn’t believe it, but there were a bunch of white people getting dismissed easily while African Americans all had court dates set to have trials.
Surely this was a coincidence, especially with a town sherreif who looks like a good ol boy with a gun. Certainly coincidence.

Probably filter through a ton of one-time offenders and either automating it or someone just select all and appeal. When I got a ticket for being in the carpool hour of the express lane but not having an express box thing I wrote to appeal since we were carpooling. The response was approved but noting that only the first offense is appealed and further violations won’t be. Sucks for the people that never appealed it because they would have gotten off, its a racket

Wow you’re fortunate. I appealed a citation once and basically their response was “No exceptions. No excuses. Pay up.”
