Never talked shit about about Chris, love the guy, but its absolutely true that he partakes in the same clickbaity tendencies that lead us to this problem in the first place.

Downvoting requires you: A. Click into the video
B. Select the downvote button, thereby engaging with the videoThe algorithm is not designed to feed you content you like, only content that will generate clicks and interaction. The only way to eliminate that content from your feed is to forcibly remove it, as they have designed the feed such that it is impossible not to interact with it.
Again, I suggest trying freetube as a frontend, as it allows you to retitle and rethumbnail clickbait videos, and remove shorts from your feeds, thereby eliminating the skinner box that is youtube from your life.

I run a couple of services. A blog for my partner, a media server (farfetched but certainly possible in 1995), as well as a matrix server.
I’m certain I’d be doing similar things in 1995. Based on my personality there’s no way I wouldn’t have gotten into that type of computing.

Youtube shorts.
Imagine you’re a gamer, one who is interested in game Design. Your view history has games, gaming, game design, but it’s also full of algotrash talking heads, scam baiters, shit slingers. You open the YouTube app on your phone, and it immediately opens to shorts, you don’t remember settings that as the default but it’s fine, you recognize the creator and the 45 second clip was neat. Swipe up. Next video, it Nile Blue dropping a beaker of chloroauric acid. Next video, its Chris Boden yelling about some kind of electrical infrastructure you don’t understand (any that’s pretty cool). Next video, Thor, speaking softly, explaining an aspect of game design that you never thought of. This one catches your attention, its in your wheelhouse, its something you’re genuinely interested in. You click the profile, swipe through a few more shorts. Your algorithm is permanently damaged. Your a pirate software fan now, whether you like it or not.
Or you can use freetube and never see algotrash talking heads in your feed and never enter into this cycle.

Have you ever done Speed Dating? Where you have 5 minute dates and if it goes well you arrange another?
It’s kinda like that, except it’s presented in the most shallow way possible and wrapped into a skinner box. The apps are so full of bots (usually scammers/phishers) that most of the matches you recieve will be fake. That’s means there’s a little dangerous with every new person you match with while you both figure out if you’re talking to a human or not. Beyond this, the apps are somewhat anonymous in a dangerous way. You don’t know if you’re meeting the person you say you are until they show up in front of you. Sometimes you match with someone and their personality isn’t what they say it is.
They’re fine, probably just about the worst way to meet someone as a long term partner. I’ve had good luck with hookups on dating apps, but I’ve had the WORST luck actually dating on them.

- Comment on Anon turns on raytracing 1 week ago:
I’m a big fan of raytraced Minecraft, but I also generally use texture packs that benefit from ray tracing. I’ve found that rather than something for realisim, finding a high resolution cartoony texture pack makes RT shine for Minecraft. Because yes, the game looks bad on purpose, lean into that and make it cartoonier too.
It makes for great survival horror when you’re on the cutest cartooniest texture pack you can find and you’re out after dark without a torch or lantern and its just pitch black except for the light of the moon, barely illuminating silhouettes against the deep purple sky. You see the monsters approaching. You turn a corner and see it, the most adorable thing you’ve ever seen, with death in its eyes made visible only by your own reflected moonlight. It’s too dark to run. Good luck.

The p is for potential, as in potential Hydrogen. pH can be used to establish a concentration of protium (H+) in solution. When learning about pH in school, we used pOH (potential hydroxide) as well to speak about bases.

- Comment on Sony will be releasing "MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL" on 4K Ultra HD on August 26. 3 weeks ago:
You can, its been done before. 35mm film with a sufficiently small grain size can reach resolutions over 5k, close to 6k.
A few years ago there was the 4k77 project which took probably cinematic reels of A New Hope and scanned them in at 4k. At that resolution, film grain was beginning to become visible, but given the high degradation of those specific film reels it isn’t surprising there were artifacts after the scans. With properly preserved film negatives you could do significantly better.

Hopefully this will turn out better than 4K77. Not that 4k77 was bad, its just pretty clear that the film they had access to was pretty heavily degraded when they did their scans

If you patch your homebrew ROMs with the 80minute cd patch you can load them in pcsx2. In this case I believe you’ll have full color regardless of if the ROMs are made for PAL or NTSC
- Comment on take me back 😭 5 weeks ago:
I’m most familiar with PS1 Homebrew, its almost all available under the “Net Yaroze” name.
Without a Net Yaroze ps1, you’ll need a TonyHAX/freePSXboot memory card to boot the games. TonyHAX unlocks the region by resetting the disc drive into an unlocked state after Boot. As a consequence, this also allows homebrew titles and less than legitimate copies of titles to boot. Don’t use this for piracy, that would be iLleGaL.
Archive.org has 3 Net yaroze game jams available, one of which has 83 titles but they usually render black and white. There is also Fromage, a ps1 demake for Minecraft (barely functional, but neat to show friends)
- Comment on Are there any plot arcs, or missed opportunities from any TV series that were abandoned that you think should've been picked up or continued? 5 weeks ago:
ATLA: It is never addressed on screen, but I’d like to know (for sure) more about the origin of Tai Ly. The eye color and head shape indicate she’s descended from the air nomads, the only other character with those eye color and head shape is Aang.
I think it’d make a great 2 episode arc or perhaps even address it in one of the books/comics where she came from. Because “I ran away to the circus because too many siblings” just isn’t a sufficient answer for a character who is clearly an air nomad living in exile.

You can at least have the gaming!
IA has most games from that era archived and most consoles can be softmodded to play totally legally aquired backups that absolutely are not archived copies of games

Why AI meme?
No hate to AI or image generation, they have their purposes, but why AI meme?
This is a 2 minute sketch, TBH I might be able to make this by hand faster than any of my locally deployed AI models.
“Sketch, Color, Snap, Crop, Add Text, Upload.”
Dont say its a skill thing, I’ve seen literal stick figure drawings on lined paper get upvoted to frontpage here on Lemmy.

Expiration dates are literally made up, very infrequently will any actual testing be done to see the exact time it takes for a food to decay enough to be either unenjoyable, unpalatable or inedible.
They’re usually 1 week from mfgr for unpreserved foods, 2 weeks to a month for soft foods like American sandwich bread, 3 months to a year for dry goods (depending on what it is) and up to several years for canned goods.
My salt has an expiration date. Salt is a rock, it is millions of years old (not sea salt, mined salt). It does not expire.
