It’s just a slight rattling, what could go wrong if I ignore it for a while?

The front fell off

That’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.

As a mechanic, you can pay me now to deal with it, or 10x as much if you ignore it.
andros_rex@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
It would help if there wasn’t a tendency for mechanics to fleece people who don’t understand cars. When I looked like a young woman, huge difference in the way I was treated - I needed to bring my dad.
Hell, the entire industry seems to be built on fleecing people. My stepdad was a finance guy for dealerships and he would fuck over anyone, friends and family included.

As a “mechanic” myself, I can say: many people mean, if we wouldn’t have the TÜV (car inspection) every 2 years in Germany, they would neglect so much! I’m talking, no oil change, no new tires, even with barely any profile left, no new brakes…
rmuk@feddit.uk 2 weeks ago
Same in the UK. We have an annual MOT tests and even with that some drivers let their cars slide so much.

New noises don’t bother me. The amount of things that can shake rattle and roll (it’s a mess but it’s all tools and things I need for work) means a new sound pops up every week.
It’s the new slightly different vibration that sketches me out.
Ever so slightly up/down vibration that you can barely feel when you get to 70? Congrats, next week when you drive to work you’ll hit a bump at 15 and the whole
frontbottom falls off. And now you have 3 other problems because drive shafts start flying all over and smashing into things when they break. No, I love vehicle ownership and definitely wouldn’t prefer to relax on high speed rail for 20 minutes with a rolling bag/tool box or literally any other form of mass transit…

I always get sketched about the vibrations from my Kia when driving over 120, but I keep saying to myself it’s just that the car wasn’t designed to go fast 😅
Exusia@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I too get sketched out when a Kia next to me gets up to 120.
Because we’re both about to get a ticket for speeding.

That is just tires out of balance.

Sacramento Police department has a helicopter, Air One, that the department is super proud of. I live in a not-rich neighborhood where Air One likes to hang out and help which sometimes includes shouting inaudibly on the PA. Air One has its own webpage which is sometimes current about what it’s doing, but not always.
Air One also likes to fly low enough that we can hear the thumping of the rotors through our apartments. At 11pm on a school night. We know it doesn’t have to because the rescue choppers zing by quietly on their way.
And lately Air One has gotten, whinier. This loud screeee! that wasn’t their before that makes me thing something in the rotors is not sufficiently oiled, or something is about to fall apart. I wonder if Air One is soon going to make an unscheduled landing in my neighborhood.
King3d@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Air One sees this post as a threat. Air One doesn’t like it one bit. Air One sees you when you are sleeping. Air One also likes watching the Oakland Athletics play and uses crime as an excuse to get the best seat. Air One wants a friend to join them. Air Two is coming to town later. Air One uses a screeching mating call to attract Air Two. Air Two ignored me, Air One Sad.

Good thing I have a bike. My car broke down like 4 years ago, been biking since. People scare me, so I don’t have places to be.

A whole-ass new bicycle is cheaper than basically any car repair. Bicycles are so cheap in comparison to cars it’s not even funny.

Tonight I’m at work and roomie texts a video of a water leak probably from the ancient upstairs bathtub faucet…that’s embedded in tile. Fucking tile. FUCK.

That’s why I drive an older gmc pickup
Barely ever breaks and when it does it’s stupid simple to work on
Imagine owning a car newer than like 2010 lol that’s for suckers
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
my cruise control keeps me from crashing into the car in front of me, in the fog. that alone is worth having a car newer than 2015.
rabber@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
That doesn’t happen to me. Useless feature

Being a mechanic helps a little… If auttaa paljon!

Had this happen recently. Turned out to be a stick that was wedged up into the hub and rubbing on the wheel. But then in the process of removing the stick I found that the wheel was fused to the brake drum and no amount of kicking or banging on it with a sledge would knock it loose. Waiting for a dry weekend to take a more aggressive approach to dealing with that problem…

As a Petrolhead, new noises mean “I hope thats a part I want an excuse to need to spend money on.”
Really, yes it needs brake pads and rotors, but thats like $300. For $300 I got a set of calipers, near new rotors and barely used pads off a facebook group member breaking a higher spec model, then spent another $200 on braided brake lines because its basically no more work if I’m doing the calipers anyway.

My mom’s Nissan Juke just started screaming, ‘Oh laaadyyy!’ whenever she starts it.
Any idea what’s going on? It’s a '16, only about 40k miles.
