You’re 100% right. Usually it’s hot, then hot with cool nights, then warm, then warm with cool nights, then just cool.

    I receive a call.

Person: I’m [name] from [company] Me: What’s the purpose of this call? Person: I can’t tell you, first I need to confirm your identity.

You call ME and can’t tell me why you’re calling until I divulge my personal information? I told this person you can say something very generic about the call reason just so I can confirm you are who you say you are before I hand over my PI, but she refused. So I ended the call. This approach is just ridiculous.

    source
    • Nath@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

Nope, I’m giving nothing the caller doesn’t already have. I will confirm they have correct info if they provide it, however. This is just basic phone security - no competent company would expect a cold call recipient to start giving them information.

And if they’re not competent, I have no business talking to them.

      source
      • mertn22@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

That means centrelink is not competent. I have had them call and ask for my details

    • Force_majeure123@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

My company has this too, pretty awkward. I normally already spoke to the person and I start with “Hi it’s Force, I spoke you last week about X - before I can go any further though I do need to ask you for X Y Z.”. Lots of ppl still prefer to end the call and call back on our main phone number though, which is fair enough

      source
      • tone212_@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

At least you give some details, that would have been enough for me. This person gave me absolutely nothing except her name and company, and it’s not someone I had ever dealt with.

Today in class, we spoke about the whole male supremacy thing that’s been going on in schools since the rise of Tik Tok. The government started an intervention about ten years ago on respectful relationships, and the evaluations on it are inconclusive - it’s difficult to evaluate something that realistically can’t be measured objectively. Students come from different backgrounds. We can only control what we expose them to in the classroom.

So now I’m doing some thinking on what I can do in this area. Research ensues.

    • dumblederp@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

I gotta say, part of it speaks to entitled young men. 25 years ago when I was trying to get laid and struggling I looked at what I could improve about myself rather than blaming women for not being interested. If I could give 15 yo me some advice on the topic it would be to keep doing what you’re doing. Treating women like people and being a good friend got me laid way more than I ever expected given my younger self’s self-esteem. That and loving someone harder won’t make them any more interested, take the no and move on.

got the van all set up and cleaned out Saturday. Better nick than you’d expect for 25 years old, but deffo needs some love. Some stains and stuff, more than a couple of scratches and possibly an issue with the roof lifting mechanism. Fridge seems to work (it dropped temp a bit on a 30 degree day, would need more time to be certain) awning still needs to be tested though, as do the bed end flys.

Taking it out in 2 weeks so the clock is ticking for its repairs.

My son and his wife and kid are now safe in Germany for which I thank various deities. USA is going to get worse before it gets better too imo. He mentioned in his last phone call that one of his neighbours went out to buy groceries, but came back with ammunition instead. And that’s in a fairly civilised part of a fairly chill city a long way from MAGAland. That was the deciding factor that made him and his wife decide to get out asap. Granted, there’s a military base there, and a lot of people who know how to NOT use guns, but still … If the ordinary decent people are starting to behave like that, anything can happen.

It’s terrifying, and I have a sinking feeling in my gut I don’t know how to describe. That feeling when something bad is happening, but it’s about to get much worse. Everyday is some new horror. Today the images of the Venezuelans. And Trump saying he was ‘being sarcastic’ when he said he would solve the Ukraine war in a day. Triggering because I have had narcissists in my life for a long time, and the whole ‘I’m not wrong, YOU’RE wrong’ gaslighting tactics used when ever they feel their status might be threatened is very real. It will not stop. Anyone who thinks they can ‘deal with’ or reason with Trump and his inner circle is dead wrong. They must have never had knowledge of this personality type. These people do not have any principles and don’t care about reason. They care only about power.

The 60 minutes bit on the CFMEU and ties to gangs was pretty interesting. As someone who has worked on sites for several years, it comes as no surprise.

I really hope someone drops the hammer on the dodgy shit. Site culture needs a reboot, but that will take years and years.

    source
    • TinyBreak@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

careful voicing that opinion online. I got jumped on for my comment on the other site calling out that I thought the union would take a dim view to having both a CFMEU bumper sticker next to a “Fuck off were full” sticker. And yes, It was on a ford ranger. Because of course it was.

      source
      • MeanElevator@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

The other site is more hellbent on blaming the government for not doing anything about this.

This whole thing is a perfect shit show where there are many guilty parties.

I’m pro union, but some union members are fuck wits that would not survive in the real world.

        source
    • Nath@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

It’s weird, I’ve got an overall positive view on the CFMEU as my dad was involved in the union as a rep (BLF) on several sites as I grew up. He faced consequences from employers for taking on this role, but it was an important one. In the 70’s/80’s, the construction industry was a terribly unsafe place to work and my dad contributed to a lot of safety changes that have since become industry standards and policies. He’s proud of the work he did for the union and I’m proud of him for what he sacrificed to keep his coworkers alive.

To see what the union has become is hurtful, but I still see them as an overall force for good in the world.

      source
      • MeanElevator@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

Personally I am 100% pro union.

However what’s become is a CFMEU is pretty much what they fought against.

Sad, but a change is needed.

Also, I always thought it was incredibly rude of my work laptop to say my chargers at home aren’t powerful enough. I have two 100w GAN 5 chargers and it complains every time I plug them in.

I looked at a charger at work today, 165w! These laptops barely last an hour on a teams call unplugged. Why do they need so much power and areso inefficient?

I got the boys down in time to watch today’s Four Corners on the childcare sector. I’m so happy my girlfriend found a job at a council run facility and that my boys are at a centre that seems well run

    source
    • SituationCake@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

I did’t watch the show, but have noticed in recent years many large very expensive looking new child care centres popping up all over the place. There must be plenty of money to be made if so many multi-million dollar facilities are profitable. I don’t live in a growth suburb with young families. I can think of at least 5 new mega places within a few km of my house. I know the workers get paid abysmally, so who’s getting the cash?

      source
      • tombruzzo@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

Childcare is heavily subsidised so you’re pretty much getting free money from the government if you operate one. The parent company of a lot of childcare centres are private equity firms you’ve never heard of so they strip everything out of them and try to run the centres with as few expenses as possible.

It’s more insidious than it looks too. A lot of centres that look independent are part of a larger chain. They either give them different names or don’t change their names after acquisition so they seem small. There are two childcare centres across the road from each other in Epping with different names, but are owned by the same parent company.

        source
    • Seagoon_@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

It’s an industry that seems to attract corruption and abusers.

It was like that over 38 years ago when miss seagoon went to childcare when i was going to uni. The woman running it was putting in fake subsidy claims and pocketing the money.

It’s the government subsidies, subsidies attract corruption.

      source
      • tombruzzo@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨month⁩ ago

My boys have ridiculously high amounts of their fees subsidised, like 96 and 98%. At that point I wonder why the childcare centre is operating as a middleman and the government isn’t looking after my kids directly.

Need to jam in a lot of work in due to a late/fumbled start this morning, but I was banking on having time to prep data for uni fieldwork as well, which I absolutely have to have ready to go out on Wednesday and had meant to do on the weekend… now looking a bit short on time for it all.
