I don’t know much about careers and stuff but if they’re equally appealing you could go for whichever has the higher salary, so you have a bit more financial stability to change to the other one in future?
Or whichever offers experience to help you get into the other
useless_modern_god@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
I had an interest in a certain line of work around 10 years ago. I literally drove to those companies unannounced and asked the the owners if I could chat about the career for a bit. To my surprise they were very accommodating and answered all my questions. It helped immensely.
Maybe try that?

Good luck :)

When I volunteered at Lort Smith, many people were there to build up their resume for animal/vet roles. In case you’re looking for more ways to get good things on your resume.

Success!!! After weeks of procrastination and increasingly yucky feelings, I’ve finally used some super janky half-manual method to randomly sample my fucking points and loaded them onto my field app SO NOW I HAVE ABSOLUTELY ZERO EXCUSE TO START ON MY FIELDWORK TOMORROW. FINALLY.
Just need to wait for the message advising me what time my dishwasher will arrive, hopefully it’s in the afternoon so I can get a few hours done in the morning without having to drive all the way out west then back.
While I’m at it, maybe I’ll finally do this dumbshit fb marketplace listing I’ve been procrastinating on, and brave the horrors of my fridge crisper to see which vegetables I can salvage.

Thank you!! It’s felt really hard to get back into gear after the holidays but I think I can handle this, just gotta keep everything in balance for a few more months.
I’m inching forwards a bit financially too, finally back to where I was last year before I bought my car. If I can grow my savings by a bit more by the end of uni I’ll be very grateful…
anotherspringchicken@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Yay you! Such a good feeling getting past one of those mental roadblocks
just_kitten@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Thank you!! Feels like I’ve finally had the most satisfying shit of my life 😂 I’m going to be kind to myself and not look back on all the weeks “wasted”. Onward ho!
I’m giving myself all the time/leeway possible. Gonna apply for max special consideration extension as well
MeanElevator@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Starting a new temporary role at work today for a few weeks and half of the team is out sick.
I’m meant to be involved in some meetings, but looks like I’m leading them now.
Gonna be fun!!

Hello everyone. I wonder when the next lemmy canvas will be, hopefully we get the flag completed

Sometimes I forget to eat all day and wonder why I’m suddenly depressed…
underwatermagpies@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Have you ever tried volunteering? If you find the right gig you can channel all of that work energy into it, and the community benefits.
Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
That’s a great idea. I think I know just the place!
TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Yes. A start. As you get more confident, you can branch out a bit more and make more connections. It’s tough but it can be done. And you have your music (and Gibson).
Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Absolutely. I do have a handful of friends which I’m grateful for, but I’m used to a different kind of social circle.
All in good time :)

Wow. My cousin is engaged, and he’s dated the girl for a year. He broke up with his last girlfriend at the middle of 2023, and got with his current one at the start of 2024. They’ve been living together for a few months. She is from overseas and is not a citizen, so half the family is questioning if she wants to marry him for citizenship. I guess sometimes, when you know, you know, and I hope it works out for him.
Seagoon_@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
This is a country of immigrants. Such questions are shameful.
Bottom_racer@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Such questions are shameful
i know you didn’t come down in the last shower of rain… but no it’s not shameful… not what I’ve seen.
SituationCake@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Yes it might be depending on context. But. I literally know of at least 2 marriages in the ethnic community I’m from that are like this. Person marries a citizen to stay. It not an easy process though, but for some couples they may find the arrangement mutually beneficial so it happens.
LowExperience2368@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
I think people tend to have a negative bias, because we’ve evolved needing to look out for danger to survive.
dumblederp@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
I kinda feel like I should marry someone from a less desirable country even just as a favour to them. There’s some real shitholes out there where even struggling in Australia would be an improvement.
Pilk@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Oh dear, my QuietComfort headphones have died overnight. I was just thinking yesterday they’re on the way to 8 years old… great innings.
TinyBreak@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Go another set of the QCs. I went the sony XM4s and they lasted maybe 1.5 years before developing one hell of a fault that rendered them unusable. When back to a new pair of Qcs and dont regret it. Dont be tempted to cheap out (not that the Sony were THAT much cheaper than the Bose anyway).
Llabyrinthine@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
I love my XM5s, but the poor things have taken quite a bashing. I think there is an issue with one side, but otherwise, still good.
tone212_@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
8 years is great, mine are approaching that old. Microphone for calls stopped working years ago but they’re still going strong as gym headphones. I’ve replaced the leather cups a couple of times.
just_kitten@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Off work today and tomorrow to try and beat myself into getting this uni fieldwork started - adhd tendencies in hyperdrive… just unable to focus on the random sampling bit so that I can get out there already while the weather’s good. I’ll get there, beating myself up is not helpful…
…but the good news is, today’s been a day for procrastiductivity: I FINALLY PULLED THE TRIGGER and bought an 8-place benchtop dishwasher after some research. As it always goes: it really wasn’t that difficult after all!
It’s arriving tomorrow; hopefully Appliances Online will bring it up the stairs for me. Installation should be super easy, just attach it directly to the spare washing machine tap I mysteriously have, and drain out to the laundry sink immediately adjacent.
I only have 3 months left on my lease (hopefully can extend to 4-5 to see me through the end of uni), but dishes are an obvious pain point for me that drags down my mood and momentum, so $315 is worth it - it’s about an extra day of work after tax, I can make up for it easily. And it should be easy to sell on afterwards if I don’t need it later
Taleya@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Remember: if you don’t have kitchen hookups there is nothing stopping you putting it in the laundry! That’s what we did :)
just_kitten@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
I almost have no choice but to put it in the “laundry” as I can’t sacrifice any more benchtop space in the kitchen; as it is I have to keep putting away my air fryer and rice cooker after use and haven’t even taken my toaster out, all of which shits me. But the “laundry” works a lot better because it’s basically a cupboard right next to the kitchen anyway - so minimal steps to transfer items, and makes use of empty space on top of the washing machine.

made some oven roasted tomato pasta last night. Tomatoes out of my garden, grown with love. It was horrible! I ate 2 bites. Mrs ate half of one. Kiddo ate a bit though I’m pretty sure he’d eat pasta with a dirt sauce so long as it was real pasta.
Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Worth doing. I got a couple wrong that I didn’t think were wrong when I answered. Bit of a wake up call.
Bottom_racer@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
The egg one is baffling. I’ve never seen buy one get one free for eggs.

Ahh… I don’t have a car and am a pensioner
Does this mean I’m entitled to kids meals and tickets?
just_kitten@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Eugh, my good mood for the day got thrown off by a bit of an intense psych session (teleheath too - I hate telehealth psychology).
But I managed to finally use that ancient beetroot (V slicer to the rescue), made a pot of dal and fried up a slab of tempeh. Tomorrow, I freeze some of the beetroot curry, and make a cabbage stir fry. And put my new dishwasher to use, with today’s mountain of dishes generated, hopefully…

Discovered little bit ago that the recycling truck didn’t take our bin because some dickhead parked directly in front of it. Starting this fortnight with an already full yellow bin, only 13 days to go until it gets emptied.

Got jokingly teased at work today because I couldn’t lift stuff that everyone else could lift. I think it’s time to potentially invest in a PT. Or just head to the gym and try to go consistently to actually see results. My muscle mass is low, but I also think the tension is low, and that’s not something that’s as fixable.
LowExperience2368@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Got my bike after about a decade from a relative’s house because we have no room, and whilst the bike is still an okay size (I haven’t grown since I was probably 13), the helmet is not. My head must’ve grown.
danwritesbooks@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
I have a question for our bakers and chefs and general kitchen superstars - whenever I try to make something doughy - like pretzels or scones - the mix is always way too sticky. I follow the advice on the ingredients, but yeah, too sticky so I end up essentially eating half the mix off my fingertips.
Any suggestions on how to combat this? Is it simply needing to add more flour?
dumblederp@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
New bike rides an absolute treat. I’ve missed bicycle rock star parking where I can ride up to the door of a place and lock it to the nearest pole. The seat is hard as, but my bum is also lacking conditioning.

Got the offer from Toshiba but there will be a background check. So let’s see what happens. Another place did the reference check so that’s good.
Place number 3 is still interviewing.
Eagle@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
You spend a third of your life at work, so you need to be happy and safe there. Your better deal is going to come with strings, so it’s not really better. Take less dollars for peace and support because it will cost you less in the long run.
anotherspringchicken@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
I’d take a pay cut for peace of mind, particularly after hearing about all the crap you’ve been through there. Working for a (hopefully) more professional and reputable org will likely mean better job security and advancement opportunities in future, too. Whatever you decide, good luck!
tone212_@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
I would take less money to leave. I was in a similar situation to you once, never regretted leaving and then working on increasing my salary at the new job once I was in the door.
Llabyrinthine@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Take less.
If my brain is functioning, apparently 80k is the happiness mark, beyond that it pretty much remains the same. There are also endless stories of people who had immensely well paying jobs who have taken drastic pay cuts and blue collar jobs and are exponentially happier.
While I’m in an odd sort of position, dropping a day when I was permanent to converting to casual and finally going elsewhere… So much happier. So much. (There were a couple extra things going on, but still. That feeling that you have to be there, when you don’t want to… Ugh.)
Catfish@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Thought you were working on an expungement?
Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
It happens in October this year :(
dumblederp@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
You current place sounds like a cross between thunderdome and a sinking ship. I’d try to leverage you current salary against the new offers, but, assuming they’re all over $75k, I’d accept a 10% hit for a job at a better place. At the first performance review I’d be pressing for them to at least match the old salary.
just_kitten@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
I place a lot of value on mental health - because treating it is fucking costly as well not just in terms of treatments/support/comfort, but also lost opportunities and time - so the gap in pay would have to be quite significant for me to stay on at a rapidly deteriorating workplace.
I initially took a fair bit of a pay cut (>10k/yr if you include allowances) from my old job to each of my two roles last year, but it was infinitely worth it for how much less stress was involved at work. And it’s paid off; the job I stayed on at increased my wage so much that the FTE is now equivalent to what I last earned (including allowances) but for FAR less stress and responsibilities in terms of colleagues as well as the workload itself.
Cannot recommend it more highly. Work often feels like such a bloody waste of time anyway, I don’t want it to eat up so much of my mental energy as well if my main financial needs are met
Duenan@aussie.zone 5 weeks ago
Hard one to be honest.
You’re probably being overworked and not being paid enough though I don’t know what that figure is.
Also they’ve made you a scapegoat with some of the stuff that’s happened and also I’m not sure what the future of the company is considering what’s happened so far but you do have a job.
I would take slightly less money to be a lot happier and have less of a workload if that makes you happy but also it’s often said the grass is greener on the other side.
