I could NOT figure out why Texas and Oklahoma had just a tiger shark problem and then I thought it must just be pet tigersharks in private enclosures… then I though, “ah its just a shit post”… And then I realized it was a badly color differentiated key.

Thought I read “feral hag”. The south is friggen crazy!

Illinoisian here
I used to enjoy hiking a lot when I was younger. I’d just go wherever. Private property. Sometimes reservations or parks but just wherever.
And I would occasionally come across some deer. Majestic animals. Also the bucks are huge.
I mean. I don’t think people realize how big these animals are.
They aren’t as big as a horse but not that much smaller.
I was always scared of the bucks.
In the winter (mating season and hunting season), they do get pretty territorial. And I had heard of urban legend stories that they would attack women on their period. Idk if that’s true but if one of them took a run at you, yeah they would fuck you up. Impale you. Stomp you.
They got cute faces but just avoid them. Especially in the winter.
It’s like our version of a smaller moose.

Mountain lions kill almost nobody.

In Georgia you’re more likely to be killed by a rattle snake than by an alligator.
zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
FL has tons of things that will kill you besides gators, even if you take away the most dangerous one “Florida man”. Gators aren’t as much of a problem as rattlesnakes or water moccasins in my experience. Or the black/brown recluse spiders, those fuckers are everywhere.
JapaneseJudas@fedinsfw.app 2 weeks ago
As a florida man I guess the alligators are just extra spicy because we have MOST of these here.
anon_8675309@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
We have about 1 for every 20 people. And yet we still average less than 1 death per year by alligator.

Do a lot of people die from alligators?
brucethemoose@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Not many:
en.wikipedia.org/…/List_of_fatal_alligator_attack…
They are everywhere in parts of Florida and Louisiana, though. When I was out walking the dog, I’d see them scurry across the street, or scamper into nearby bogs/lakes.
ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 3 weeks ago
Rule of thumb in Florida: if you can’t see the bottom of a body of water, there’s a gator in there.
dingus@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Generally only if you’re incredibly stupid. Small children you have to watch tho.
Malica@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
I wouldn’t think so, they aren’t as aggressive as crocodiles

Black bears for MN? Not Timberwolf? Black bears run from you if given the chance.
GiantChickDicks@lemmy.ml 3 weeks ago
There has only been one fatal wolf attack in the US in recorded history. Any attacks by wolves are extremely rare, as most are quite way of people. I’d assume that’s why they aren’t included.
Yew@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Beauty and the Beast (1991) contains TWO wolf attack scenes. Are you telling me that Disney didn’t research nature correctly?
mitchty@lemmy.sdf.org 3 weeks ago
Mama black bears will kill you dead if you’re by the baby or in the area code of it’s existence. They’re not timid in mom mode.
_stranger_@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
They’re not kidding about the hogs. They’re not just road hazards, they will fuck you up in person and they’re tough as fuck. They’re invasive, and in Texas you can pay to hunt them from a helicopter.

White tailed deer: “Hey kid, you want a cigarette? No? That’s OK. Say, you mind if I just sit here next to you and smoke, then?”

MD here, very few sharks in Cumberland, great, white or otherwise.

I’m grateful for my blessings and believe in sharing kindness with others. I’m organizing a $35,000 giveaway to support people struggling with bills and everyday expenses. If you’re interested, reach out on Telegram at @Georgestones12 with the message “GRACE” to request the official details and eligibility requirements. It’s a season of love, kindness, and giving back, and I hope to bring encouragement to those who need it most.

The White Tailed Deer in the yellow states is not from the animal directly attacking people, it’s from the dumb motherfucker stepping out into the road way and standing there as you’re driving 70 mph on the freeway.
restingOface@quokk.au 3 weeks ago
Deer is just chilling and minding its own business when some dumb motherfucker comes driving 70 mph into it

I would love this to be the case, I live in Ohio, I love deer they are beautiful and we have a family of them that live in our woods and I love seeing them.
Deer though are the stupidest motherfuckers on the planet.
One time my mom was driving down a country road with me in the passenger seat. A deer came out of the woods, my mom saw it and stopped, the deer looked at the car and froze. Ok so far nothing crazy, deer just doing deer things. Then the deer runs full speed and at the last moment turns and runs into the side of the completely motionless car ripping the side view mirror off and breaking its own neck.
For as much as I can sympathize with the fact that a deer is an animal that evolved for a completely different environment than the constructed one that humans have pushed them into. Growing up around them you realize that they are beautiful majestic dangerous stupid 200 pounds of muscle and ticks and madness ready to run 30 miles an hour in a random direction if you look at them wrong.
TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Or like my buddy’s ex, she was driving and one of them motherfuckers just jumped into her driver’s side window. She was in the hospital for days, the deer limped off into the woods, and we were cleaning glass and deer blood out of her vehicle for a while.
Nollij@sopuli.xyz 3 weeks ago
If it makes you feel better, there’s a good chance the deer died from those injuries. Between blood loss, infections, and whatever physical injuries, nature is not very forgiving.
JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
I was about to ask if that was the case, because I’ve never heard of one attacking anyone.
dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
The bucks can get a little rambunctious during mating season, but getting charged by a deer isn’t quite in the same league as, say, a moose.
Me, I’m more taking exception to the copperhead zone, there. You are exceedingly unlikely to die if you’re bitten by a copperhead. These are the most weaksauce of all vipers and the least dangerous venomous snake found in North America. I think you’ll have a much more miserable time of it if you happen to get tagged by a timber rattlesnake, which encompasses all of the copperhead’s range as depicted by that map and also continues quite a bit further, as far north as New York and as far west as eastern Oklahoma and Texas.
Furthermore, I think the chances of being eaten by a Great White in Delaware or Maryland are pretty overblown. The Maryland number one should probably also be the timber rattler or possibly black bears, especially in the western portion, and Washington DC drivers in the east. Similar with Delaware, where the most aggressive wildlife are probably the Juggalos.
GiantChickDicks@lemmy.ml 3 weeks ago
While it’s rarely life-threatening, whitetail deer do sometimes attack people. Once they’ve got you down they batter you with their front legs. It looks really funny, but it can be serious.
kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
When I was an infant, my mom had done run headfirst into the side of her car and break it’s neck.
