The town and HOA only have two settings for a holiday: Jesus and Troops. I guess Labor days is a "Troops" holiday.

Flags everywhere, and not just ‘Merican ones, actual flags for the branches of the armed forces. They even bought Space Force flags, for fuck’s same.

Flags on Labour Day tells me the people don’t know the difference between Labour Day, which is in September, and Memorial Day, which is in May.

Memorial Day is not a day for celebration, it’s a day for paying respect to the ultimate sacrifice made by soldiers. Labour Day is about celebrating labour, i.e. workers. Of course most people do celebrate both days, especially if they have the day off of work, but grilling burgers on Memorial Day and knowing the meaning behind the day is not as egregious, IMO, as waving military flags on Labour Day. Just sounds like someone is confused or not educated.

    It’s not a knock-off, it’s an intentional misdirect. President Grover Cleveland and Congress wanted a workers’ holiday that wasn’t associated with the radical, socialist-flavoured May Day, so they went with the safer, domesticated Knights of Labor version instead.

I think I once read half of homeowners live in hoa’s now. Fuck that, no one is telling me what I can do with my property in the private sector. Not crazy about the government either.

    HoA’s became a major thing after WW2, in large part, to keep black people from moving into white neighborhoods… with rare exceptions for “servants”.

    Because HOAs are not bad if ran correctly.
    
    The problem is when someone’s freedom infringes on another’s.
    
    Can a neighbor resurrect a 15ft tall obscene statue in their yard?
    
    Land of the free says yes. But every neighbor is going to hate it.
    
    With an HOA you don’t have to worry about it because the HOA will not allow it. You are protected from your neighbor’s choices that could make your property less appealing.

the damn flags are a peeve of mine.. like we need to be reminded of our own fascism.

mine is the only one in the hood that doesnt sport a us flag.. they actually come around and insert these little tiny ones into everyones from lawn, so i have to remove it every year.

...its cool, for xmas we celebrate by putting out a 9 ft roaring abominable snowman (from rudolph) and about 50k lights starting nov-1. the hoa hasnt said shit so far.

yeah I don’t get flags on labor day. Kinda cracks me up that the biggest flag wavers are also so often the ones being disrespectful in how they do flags. have it on paper plates, napkins, putting small flags all over the place. Often times this ends up as best trash and at worst litter. Then on clothing and they throw a flag up and keep it there overnight without illumination because they are to lazy to put it out in the morning and take it in in the evening. Have the pole placed such that it hits or worse wraps around some object so it really can’t wave unimpeded. Flag wavers are in general the most disrespectful folks when it comes to the flag and they think they are patriots. Maybe 1% of people who put up a flag do it properly. Much less if you include the flag on everything stuff.

Why does the US have HOAs? I can’t think of other countries that have them, nor why they are really needed. Seems like a chance for power-hungry people to be little Hitlers over minutiae.

  Once upon a time, racists would put racial deed restrictions on a house (you could only sell it to another white buyer).
  
  When that was thrown out, HOAs were a work-around (I’ve been told. Not completely sure how they could just veto a sale to someone with melanin).
  
  Today, they manage communal property and services (eg landscaping and community pools). The little Hitlers will also put some light fascism in the rules. Some understandable like leaving trash cans out indefinitely. Some less so like exterior paint colors.
  
  I’m generally not a fan of HOA for single family homes, but I’ve yet to hear of an alternative for multi family buildings (“condos” in most of America). How else do you decide what gets done to communal space?

    They can’t, but they can make sure that melanin is the only visible or auditory difference. Nowadays, most (but not all) racists are okay with brown and black people existing as long as they make a little bit less than white professional peers and exactly match the racists’ understanding of how white people should act.

  The Netherlands has them, if a building has multiple apartments there usually is a HOA. I think it used to be a lot like in the US where some bored pensioner decides to ruin everyone else's day, but these days they are more and more run by corporations.

how else will the armed forced branches source thier cannon fodder, they have pretty good success rates in red areas with white people than blue areaones, in blues they target MINORITIES majority of the time, a nearby marine recruiting office has mostly POCs(asians, hispanics).

I live in an HOA but its legit like 6 houses and they actually use the money we put in to make our living situation better. One year it snowed so much that they hired people to shovel all of our roofs. Small HOA has been a great experience. The fee is only like $150 a month.

  A work colleague is the president of his HOA board. I get to hear about the other side of the conflicts.
  
  I’m only hearing his side, but the things he tells me about make it seem like some of his neighbors are just idiots.
  
  Like people parking in no-parking areas that are supposed to be kept clear for emergency vehicle access. He’s warned people that they can’t park there, and they treat it like he’s being a fascist. He just doesn’t want to hear their bitching when they get towed.
  
  There’s a rule about not being on or near the power transformer. The reason is because people could be injured. However, when he tells someone to keep their kids off it, he’s being a tyrant.
  
  He’s only the president of the HOA board because no one else wants the job. He’s not running around issuing fines because he doesn’t have time for that shit.
  
  People threaten to sue the HOA for bullshit, and he’s baffled. It’s like they think there’s some income stream apart from the fees they pay. If they sue the HOA, they are suing themselves and their neighbors.
  
  I always think about him when I read people complaining about their HOA.
  
  Don’t get me wrong, I would never buy a property in an HOA, but if they do, it’s not like they’re helpless. They can read the rules, organize a resistance, vote the fascists out. They can take charge. They can show everyone how much better their leadership would be.
