- Comment on What are super-computers used for ? 3 days ago:
Galaxy collisions, protein folding, mechanical design and much more. Big simulations of real world physics and chemistry that require massively parallel computation, problems that require insane numbers of calculations running on multiple machines that can pass data to each other very quickly.
Every supercomputing center has a website where you can read about the research being done on their machines.
No, these can’t be done at similar scale on your desktop. Your PC can’t do that many calculations in a reasonable time. Even on supercomputers, they can take weeks.

Funny how there are Russians involved with another Trump.
- Comment on Are you people all bots? 1 week ago:
There are bots. Some are self-identified and some even put ‘bot’ in the username. There are bots that just repost from Reddit, bots that post only articles from a specific site/publication—like the BBC bot.
There’s not as much use for Reddit-like karma farming bots because karma isn’t really a thing on Lemmy/piefed/etc. But, there are definitely bots that that post agenda-pushing content or SPAM pushing content.
I assume any account with only posts or extremely high post to comment ratio is a bot. I wish they would force participation requirements for posting.
You also have troll accounts and weird accounts that will make one controversial post and then ghost.
- Comment on LMAO too much ID tv here. If I wanted to bury a body in my yard, should I still call the hotline so I don't hit a gas line or something? I nominate this for stupid question of 2026 1 week ago:
If you hit a line you’ll be found out. Call the hotline dig the hole then install something like a clothes drying rack after depositing the body.
Make sure to put sod around it or a concrete pad otherwise it will be obvious that the hole was too big for the pole.
- Comment on What do all the subgenres of music mean? How does anyone make sense of them? 1 week ago:
The best way to learn this is by listening to music.
- Comment on What does that mean ? 2 weeks ago:
Don’t worry about it too much. I don’t judge anyone banned from that community harshly. The mod is… overzealous to say the least.
I consider myself progressive and I’ve checked out the modlog there. It’s a bit much.

- Comment on Are there any art programs designed specifically for mouse users? 2 weeks ago:
Mouse users? As opposed to what? Stylus users? Touch?
Any software that can be used with a mouse can be used with stylus or touch. Any raster art program made for a personal computer will have mouse support.
It’s not clear what you’re even asking.

You’re right, parody is a better description than mockery.
- Comment on Tawny Newsome Gives Update On Live-Action Star Trek Comedy – “We’re Ready!” 3 weeks ago:
Has Star Trek jumped the shark?
ToS and TNG were always a bit cheesy but at heart they were morality plays and social commentary. I couldn’t get into much after TNG. I’ve been watching Strange New Worlds and it’s all right but the musical episode and some other bits were a bit too… campy?
But, a comedy? Is it becoming Galaxy Quest? The movie that mocked it?
- Comment on handling strays 4 weeks ago:
I wonder if it’s just a pack mammal thing. Like the way young male lions hang out in groups but the older ones are solitary especially if they have a pride.

Jesus, that sucks.
- Comment on I was diagnosed with early onset dementia and alzhimers. Is there safe guards I can put it up so I don't screw or kill anyone? Like who do I contact about being denied to own a gun? 1 month ago:
Do you know anyone that you trust unconditionally?
You should assign someone durable power of attorney so that they can make decisions and manage your finances. Start planning medical and care decisions right now.
Otherwise, why do you think you would buy a gun? That’s not really common among people with dementia. Does your state have medical marijuana? Get a medical marijuana card. Most places, that will disqualify you or make it difficult.
Make sure someone is getting you evaluated regularly. Mental illness is also a disqualifier for gun purchases. A dementia diagnosis won’t necessarily disqualify you, though (except in Hawaii and Texas).

All of the investors that opposed this should divest, now. It’s the only sensible response.

FYI, most Mullvad exit nodes are blocked by big services.
You have to try different ones to find one that works. I have found just a couple that work for, for example, Netflix or Reddit.
Proton and PIA seemed to be easier, I think they have more exits and/or rotate the IP addresses of the exits.
I like Mullvad as a company better so I use them.
