The pains of a growing platform.
Yes. As the platform becomes more mainstream, it more accurately reflects society at large. Which is extremely toxic at the moment. 😕 I used to think talking about our differences in forums like this would help, but it seems that no one actually wants to listen to anything but their own echo chambers anymore.
I’m down. I’ve found that people genrally want the same things, we just disagree at how best to get there.
Lemmy is not at all an accurate reflection of reality. Nobody in my day to day life is going to argue that communism is far superior to capitalism. That’s part of the problem. Us internet dwellers think this is what real people are like but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
My experience is that firstly Lemmy is not that diverse and secondly that there are platforms that are not that diverse either but are much more open and capable of discussion. Tildes for example is in general too progressive for me (I'm not from the US, so I don't really fit into its politics/culture wars left-right division, though I'm closer to the left), but it's nowhere near as toxic as political threads around here and it's normally possible to have discussion and disagree in a civil way.
Tildes is mostly better for actual discussion right up until it’s not. The mod/admin gave me a temp ban after I said someone was “kinda stupid” after they said that an entire group of people was “incapable of creating anything positive or of value”. So, you can disparage entire groups on Tildes and it’s fine as long as the mods agree with you.
Lemmy is not that diverse
Understatement of the year. Just like most places on the internet, it leans mostly white, mostly male, mostly from US/Europe, mostly interested in computers/technology. Not exactly a diverse group at all. I’ve definitely had women already tell me this place isn’t exactly friendly to women, but I mean, that’s par for the course for the internet.
It is interesting to be exposed to widely different people. People talk about our internal politics but not usually about, well, socialism or agorism.
I’ve blocked all the news communities for a start. Maybe I’ll let one through eventually, but I’m sick of seeing 13 duplicate posts about how Elon Musk said that penguins can’t be trans or something equally useless.
As for getting more toxic in general I haven’t noticed anything drastic but my gut feeling is that as Lemmy grows, more people see a post, and as more people see a post, the better the odds that one person is going to start an argument. Even if 99.99% of the Lemmy community is not toxic, it only takes one person to reply.
I’ve blocked all the news communities for a start.
I’ve done the same. Works wonders for my mental health.
Tbf he is the leading expert on aquatic fowl gender theory
I’m getting there. One by one, I’m leaving the news communities, because they’re so deranged.
It’s frustrating, though, cuz Reddit (for better & worse) was a pretty good source of news, and a good place to discuss it. Yes there was a lot of noise, but most of the time the top few comments were worth reading. Sometimes it was legit deep analysis, sometimes insider knowledge about the politics/business/culture in question. Then below that, there was the bog-standard predictable takes and the shit-slinging.
On Lemmy, you only seem to get the latter. I guess it’s just not big enough, or skews young and inexperienced.
*Looks at OPs comment history…Yea, youre the problem.
Why is it always the delusional ones that make these posts?
'why is the fediverse so left wing?' proceeds to post Nazi dog whistles.
Bitches gon bitch
This is something you said recently: “The US is actually better than the UK on a number of issues. America is a better place to live than Europe on the whole.”
Maybe stop being such an ignorant propagandist yourself if you want to see less of that?
I mean, ignorant, fine, but propagandist??
This thread is to sow division, I think that’s what morphballgannon was saying.
Quoting what someone else said is not toxic. If you find our exchange became toxic when I quoted you, the simplest explanation is that your opinion I quoted is toxic.
You are only an idiot and whatever “point” you think you are making is comical.
Most of your comment history is pretty toxic. If you disagree with most of the users, maybe you’re just the minority here?
Pro-establishment Chads are the most oppressed class of them all.
Hey now, real men. Real white men. Real white heterosexual men. Real white heterosexual christian men…. They’re really oppressed nowadays. Can’t anyone grab a little pussy anymore, as a joke of course, without being oppressed!!!
And what should we do with minorities?
Ohhhh, stirring the pot and trying to make this a toxic conversation, Wooooo!!! Fuck yeah! You’re such a badass.
When you say "bad news" you mean like in the various "world news" type communities? Personally I haven't found those to be much good. Subscribe to the communities that are to your liking, and make your default view of lemmy show only them. If it isn't already strictly necessary now it will become so soon with any further growth.
beehaw.org might be more in line with what i think you are expecting
Like others have noted, between being a growing platform and the exodus of Reddit, theres bound to be a influx of users… Internet users. The worst…
I came here from Reddit, unable to support the site any longer. I to am see changes from when i started (initially visiting before creating an account a few months ago) and there are some changes already. But you get some good to. A better diversity of posts and more interesting things. But also ass hats. The good.ajd bad of the internet. Still. I do feel this site, at least for bow, is far less toxic then reddit… Or 4chan (lol). So… It is what it is?
We need to make the best of lemmys, and maybe we can encourage the positive over the ass hattery. (fairly certain thats a word, yea).
The people who post that they don’t like certain products or services are getting trolled by the companies they’re being negative about . It was far worse on Reddit, almost abusive, but I have seen it more often than I’d like. I hate to call them trolls since they’re doing it for serious business instead of laugh, is there a better word for it? Maybe PRolls?
We are in the middle of 2 huge and very hot propaganda wars. The entire world is getting toxic right now.
I’m noticing the same. Maybe the chill people are slowly having enough of the more toxic people and are going somewhere else. I’m not really enjoying the constant barrage of far-left biased news and opinions. I just want to chill but it seems to permeate everything. Things aren’t always great in the world, but personally I come here to not be reminded of that.
Politics is an ever present reality of life especially nowadays with the internet so that’s kinda why it’s everywhere. People want to vent and vent where they feel safe. If you don’t like it just scroll past, that’s what I do when I don’t really want to engage with content
What exactly is a far left viewpoint?
Hmm, i see the same but from the other direction.
Maybe if you provide a few examples, it would help provide some insight?
If I were to provide an example, it would probably incite a flame war right here
Maybe your opinions are controversial?
Be the change you want to see. But if you’re going to post something controversial you can probably expect a debate. Is that a bad thing?
Lemmy isn’t getting toxic. You’re just seeing that people don’t like or agree with your right-wing BS like they would on other sites. You’re the problem.
I saw non-political/ideologic posts getting downvoting alot. He is right
Just try to set a good example. Name calling is not okay. If you disagree with something, be careful to argue against the idea, and don’t attack the person who posted it. (If it’s impossible to disagree with a post without attacking OP personally, just don’t reply at all.)
If something can be interpreted multiple ways, give people the benefit of the doubt. If you ask a question, make sure it’s not a loaded one, and try not to make any assumptions. Don’t be afraid to admit that you’re wrong or don’t know something. If you’re so invested in a topic that you can’t discuss it without losing your cool, feel free to skip the thread entirely. Apologize when it’s called for.
TL;DR do your bit to normalize civil discourse. That alone will encourage others to do the same.
Damn… This should be the sidebar rules for all of the Internet. Bravo.
Confirmation bias maybe. I’ve been here a few months and is about the same as it always been for me. The most ‘toxic’ part is when I get down voted for having a disagreeable opinion, but I’ve lived a long time and have been on internet fourms to not get too salty when a majority doesn’t like what I say.
your opinion on toxicity is “wrong”
downvoted.
Internet points matter even less here, I’m not sure why anyone would care except to maybe look at why they’re downvoting. I usually keep them up unless I’ve changed my mind because of it.
If you see someone being an ass, just call them out, especially if it’s in a community you like.
I think that may be part of what OP is seeing. If someone agrees with something they may just up vote and move on but if they disagree then they may actually engage and comment. That person may be in the minority but there isn’t much to say if you agree with someone. Reddit had the annoying “This” but it doesn’t really add anything
I’m a bit unsure there, but it could be building frustration? Sure, a good bunch of users left Reddit for example and Lemmy had a huge influx. But Reddit didn’t die, the user numbers are going back down again.
So where others blame too much growth on bad quality posts and comments, I’d say we don’t have enough growth to sustain a lot of communities properly.
Why? I don’t know. It just annoys me without end and it lessens my what’s the word… Involvement? With the platform.
It’s always the same sour shit which gets old.
There’s only room for one opinion here or so it seems to me.
Be the change you want to see. Post content you like. Support content you want to want to see more of.
Lemmy will either expand or stagnate.
The problem is that the people OP complains about generally don't want to see anything else and pointlessly argue with you if you do it. Personally I'm slowly ending my Lemmy experiment and posting somewhere where the majority cares and is capable of normal discussion.
There is a lot of bad news out there. Not just a Lemmy issue.
At the risk of getting called toxic here I’m sure but I hate how this sub turned into asklemmy2 so fast. I’ve only seen a handful of “stupid-sounding” questions…the rest, like this, are just normal questions or ones with vague opinion-based answers.
If that’s the way the mods want to run this community that’s fine but I think it’s gonna hit my block list soon
What the heck did you just spew in the Lemmyverse, you little troublemaker? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in Lemmy School, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on toxic threads. Your toxic behavior is not something to be taken lightly. I’m trained in internet etiquette, and I’ve got the entire Lemmy community behind me. You think you can just hurl insults and spread negativity without consequences? Think again. As we speak, I’m contacting my secret network of moderators across the Lemmyverse, and your account is being traced right now, so you better prepare for the storm, pal. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your online presence. You’re toast, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can report you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my basic keyboard. Not only am I extensively trained in comment moderation, but I have access to the entire arsenal of Lemmy tools, and I will use them to their full extent to wipe your miserable comments off the face of the Lemmyverse, you little troublemaker. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your typing. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you dang fool. I will rain down reports all over you, and you will drown in the consequences. You’re out of the Lemmyverse, kiddo.
I just downvoted your post.
The amount of karma (points) on your post and Lemmy account has decreased by one.
There are several reasons I may deem a post to be unworthy of positive or neutral karma. These include, but are not limited to:
Rudeness towards other Lemmings,
Spreading incorrect information
No - not yet. But you should refrain from making posts like this in the future. Otherwise I will be forced to issue an additional downvote, which may put your commenting and posting privileges in jeopardy.
Sure, mistakes happen. But only in exceedingly rare circumstances will I undo a downvote. If you would like to issue an appeal, shoot me a private message explaining what I got wrong. I tend to respond to Lemmy PMs within several minutes. Do note, however, that over 99.9% of downvote appeals are rejected, and yours is likely no exception.
Accept the downvote and move on. But learn from this mistake: your behavior will not be tolerated on Lemmy. I will continue to issue downvotes until you improve your conduct. Remember: Lemmy is privilege, not a right.
There’s upliftingnews@ too if that’s what you’re after. :)
I think it highly depends on the communities you follow and the instances you joined. There are less users and less of an algorithm, so things that might be filtered or de-prioritized on other large social media networks are all shown as-is in the All feed. I do think if we need more activity on and moderators for some more of the wholesome communities though
What is going on?
Waves hands around at generally everything
Due to the fragmented nature of the Fediverse, it becomes easy to use bots to post manipulative political posts. Real people can do the same, either in ideological support or as a misinformation campaign. Anger sells and manipulation has real world benefits.

I think I’ve blocked the world news communities. They only serve up the bad stuff.
Block negative communities, post good stuff, subscribe to what you care about, make nice comments, vote, eat your vegetables

the world is terrible: wallow in the negativity and spread it like the rest of us
V17@kbin.social 1 year ago
This is the problem though. It's fine to mention them and be informed, but there is no need to wallow in how horrible the world is and shut down anybody who disagrees, which is what OP is complaining about. Those are two separate things, the second one is a choice and there are places where it doesn't happen.
hperrin@lemmy.world 1 year ago
If you’re pleased about the way the world is right now, you probably have some really bad takes that deserve to be shut down.
