Blame the elected officials for forcing Valve’s hands. Valve effectively had these choices:
- Stop operating in Australia
- Not comply and pay fines
- Use CC as an indirect way to verify age (since banks are regulated themselves and do identify verification before issuing one)
- Do age verification (by themselves themselves or through a third-party) and put users data at risk in case of a data leak
To me it seems like they chose the least risky option available.

Yeah it definitely wasn’t all perfect, but at least major bugs were ironed out before launch. I don’t mind the glitch here and there, what bothers me is the quality of games when they release, some are truely pushed out to be sold way too early because the worst thing that can happen is a bit of bad press.

Why? It made it really important for developers and publishers to release a polished game that worked on day one, because if you fucked up, you’d have to recall the cartridges or discs for replacement.

This kind of baseless accusation of “AI slop” is actually harmful to legitimate businesses. The brewery in question, which I know well (based in Montreal, Canada), has this visual identity from way before genAI was commonplace.

Cheap storage and RAM availability (until recently) meant that developers could sacrifice space and minimize the amount of compression on assets.
Decompressing files require processing, and if you can avoid that, then you free up some computer resources.

They’re stuck being priced-out of the game with the rising price of hardware caused by AI data-centers.
And to the surprise of no one, those with a vested interest in building and maintaining those data-centers are trying to make cloud-gaming a think (Amazon Luna, GeForce Now).
You won’t own your AAA games any more, and they’ll make them cloud-exclusive to stomp piracy and game resales.
