White people got cocaine and made the financial system.
Wasted potential.

How did this get funded!?
protist@retrofed.com 1 day ago
They state right there at the beginning that they’re studying how social cues impact addiction. That knowledge has real potential to impact substance abuse treatment modalities.
As an aside, the “how did that get funded” joke is a common right-wing trope to dismiss or undermine any science they don’t like, so I’d recommend in the future you avoid it

Addiction research I’d assume. For the purpose of medical research rats are assumed to be tiny humans you can experiment on.

I finally figure out jazz.
The musician plays the instrument in such a way that the listener wants to take it away.
Easy.

Jazz? Is it the 1940s, again? Who the fuck cares about Jazz anymore?
Donkter@lemmy.world 2 days ago

Red dirt country is our Jazz. It’s country but not 24/7 my wife left me for my dog while driving my truck.
Whiskey Myers- Broken window serenade is a song about watching someone deal with a loved one on meth.
Tejon street corner thieves- blue lives murder. Goes ham on cops for killing folks. They also got a song called “oh my god” which has helped me deal with finding out my ma has stage 4 blood and lung cancer.
Amigo the devil has lots of deep songs that gives me white folks jazz/blues. One is called cocaine and abel. Another one I really feel in my heart is stronger than dead.
Sorry to go on rant. I love sharing music I listen to.

Maybe Jesse Welles fits that bill? He’s a bit folky like early Dylan but his songs are both critical and amazing.

Throwing bridge city sinners out there too for those who enjoyed amigo

Just listened to the Cocaine and Abel song.
This band needs to be famous.

Amigo the Devil is a hell of a live show. If you ever have the chance to see them, I highly recommend it. The lead singer has some great stage presence. For as grim as the songs can be, the whole show was fairly wholesome as well.

The beggars guild by Road kill ghost choir is nother emotional song I feel.
And Goodnight Texas- Hurry things along. This song got me to quit smoking cigs.

Hey, I’m glad you liked it! My first song from him was “Dahmer does hollywood.”

I had to go back and look to see if I wrote this comment.
Alt-country and dark Americana are my jam. Whiskey Myers is from my neck of the woods and actually calls out the titty bar that was down the street from where I worked (I passed that thing at least 10 times a week) in Broken Window Serenade. Used to go watch them play local shows in the late 00s and early 10s before I moved to Houston. They are all pretty good guys.
I feel like a few weeks ago I called out Cocaine and Abel as being one of the saddest songs I know somewhere on Lemmy.
I’ll also say that smack gave us a lot of grunge music.

My former boss, when I did flooring, listened to Myers. The song stone, I think it was, had me hooked.
Then from there The Dead South- in hell I’ll be in good company, which sent me to The White Buffalo, and then from there a deep rabbit hole.
I love knowing music of different walks of life. My pandora will go from Matchbox20 and Goo goo dolls, to Lamb of God, Spark Master Tape, Tupac, pretty much everything.
I actually started listening to rap when I was alot younger and a dumb bigot. My ma taught me to learn what songs were about. Which I did with the rap songs, which in turn helped me grow past my racism and realize how fucked the world is and that the color of my brother’s skin doesn’t matter.

Just grabbed a couple albums from the Tejon Street Corner Thieves the other day - good stuff! I’ll have to give those other bands a listen as well!

I love his voice. I’m no singer but I sing in my car, no matter whose in it, and I feel I can nail his songs the best.
The song Demons and the song Whiskey hit me in my core.
Both, and I know this is gonna sound dumb, but my addiction to weed and rage. I grew up in a very violent house. We didn’t talk things out, we fought, even if we were wrong. It’s addicting to have that level of rage. Seeing red, being out of your body. One day like 6 yrs ago I heard Demons.
I was riding home by myself from Tifton to Valdosta. I broke down crying driving on back roads at night cause I felt the song in my heart. Then Whiskey a while after, and it made me see how much I was relying on weed to mask my emotions. I still smoke. But it’s a lot less and I am open to myself and anyone who does something to affect(?) my emotions.
Then like I said, the new song oh my god. Boy. My mama having cancer. She raised me. She believes in God, and I don’t. It got me to thinking that maybe I don’t know and that all this has happened and will happen and if there is a god, we don’t know anything about them, so why make assumptions? Just feel the grass grow between your toes.
Whew. Sorry brother/sister, I got to running my fingers and couldn’t stop.

Rant away, man. Music you love is worth being passionate about.
Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Thank you my friend, it’s giving me butterflies that y’all liked the songs and hearing others talk about their love for the music.

“Red dirt” specifically refers to a region straddling the Red River, including parts of Oklahoma and Texas. The soil in the region is actually red. But the musical area is much larger than the geological area.
