That comment reads to me more like criticism of the original Alita than genuine desire for a sequel. It’s saying “this film was all setup, no payoff”.

It kinda was IMO

Yeah they wrote it as a trilogy, with a big ass cliffhanger. They had Edward Norton as the overarching villain, as the other poster mentioned, but didn’t even utilize him. The plot was meant to follow the manga, so people at least had some idea of what was to come.

Was that movie supposed to ever have a sequel? I have no idea what the point of edward nortan’s ambiguous villain character even was? Was there a sequel planned and then they canned it? Overall the movie jjust made zero sense.
MrEff@lemmy.world 5 days ago
Yes, it was supposed to have a sequel. It was the start of a franchise that never became one. The OP of the OP is not wrong in saying it was a setup and wanted a sequel. The difference of this movie versus the slop of other sequels is this one was made to be one. It wasn’t based on some one-off movie that did well, so the studio demanded a followup to milk it for more money. From its inception this movie was supposed to have one.

I never saw it myself. I was just interpreting the comment from the OOP.

Just read the fucking manga then for fucks sake!
Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 5 days ago
The manga also makes very little sense, but yeah
Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world 5 days ago
What do you mean the giant space dick fighting grey goo doesn’t make any sense?
Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 5 days ago
I literally had no idea it was a manga. How was anyone supposed to know without being told explicitly first?

But I dony want spoilers for the movie"
“…not a very good story”
I guess every second season of anime has a bad plot
JackbyDev@programming.dev 5 days ago
OP, did you see the movie? It is set up for a big race thing that never happens. It essentially ends on a cliff hanger.
altima_neo@lemmy.zip 5 days ago
Yeah the whole thing was written to be a trilogy. But James Cameron was too busy with Avatar.

this is the most interested I’ve been in this movie should I watch it

FWIW, Cameron confirmed Alita 2 & 3 are in the works as of last year.

Considering how much post production these film would need, and suffering absolutely no delays, I expect these films to come out in 2026 & 2028, respectively.

Cowards, should adapt the remaining 6 1/2 volumes, 19 volumes of the sequel and 11 volumes of the prequel.
abigscaryhobo@lemmy.world 2 days ago
I think we need a word for an unnecessary sequel. Like it’s not a remake but they just retcon the ending and are like “oh look actually there’s more!” On a story that was perfectly wrapped up already.
expatriado@lemmy.world 6 days ago
nice job OP with the fresh content:
disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 6 days ago
For real though. Ed Norton teed up a great villain in the first movie. As a general rule, if he’s in the cast, then I’m watching.

It annoys me that gamers always ask for something new, and then only get excited during Game Awards/E3 when they think a trailer is for some kind of sequel.
“Oh. Prince of the Urban Night? A creative new world inspired by yada-yada…darn. I thought it’d be Half Life 3.”

Almost as if they’re not going to die on this hill, how dare they ask for something they want

The guy just wanted to get an end to a cliffhanger.

I also work with project managers who also want things one day, then want different things the other day.

I mean, I’d love an ABA sequel.
Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 6 days ago
I don’t quite get it. You wanted a sequel for one movie, therefore you should be fine with “a year of sequels, remakes and regurgitated crap”?
spankmonkey@lemmy.world 6 days ago
No, but it shouldn’t be surprising that there are a ton of sequels and remakes when even the people who complain about there being too many sequels and remakes are asking for them.
They were just pointing out the irony.

I don’t think they really wanted a sequel to that movie, I think they were just saying it teased a bunch of interesting stuff in its trailer but then never actually did any of that stuff in its plot, probably because the producers wanted to make everyone buy a ticket to a sequel that never happened, which is just another facet of how the film industry’s obsession with sequels and fictional universes is leading to the downward spiral they talk about in their other comment
It honestly feels like this post was put together by an LLM that just saw the word “sequel” in two different sentences but didn’t have any ability to read context and figured it must be ironic
kemsat@lemmy.world 5 days ago
Then it shouldn’t be surprising that other people might want sequels to other movies, and therefore many movies being released are going to be sequels

There are very few things that are truly black and white in this world, most are shades of grey. If you deal in absolutes, you are lying to yourself, everyone else, or are probably a Sith.
