Vitamin and mineral content for cat food doesn’t exist, just Crude Ash % (which is the % of vitamins and minerals after incineration). I found a whole metric fuckton of vetmed papers detailing the minimum requirements for cats, but no packaging has a breakdown of what vitamins and minerals they contain.

I don’t want to google every bloody ingredient.

Interestingly, Fancy Feast and Purina are much more transparent than Dine. Thanks Nestle, I guess lol

    • underwatermagpies@aussie.zone ⁨6⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

When I had to switch my cat to an all-wet food diet recently I was talking to my vet about what I was feeding, and he said “oh Dine? Yes that’s the yummiest wet food.” It wasn’t until I was on my way out that I started to wonder, um, how does he know??

      source
      • StudChud@aussie.zone ⁨6⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Pfft tell that to Mickey, he’s a fickle fae. Sometimes he loves dine, sometimes he’s not interested, hence why I have both Dine and Fancy Feast, keeps it fresh for him hahaha

And I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Vet has tried it hahah but more likely they’ve just gathered that data from their clients lol

I’m wondering if the cat food Ted loves, fussy cat dry food, is bad for him, he’s become so fat. I’m weaning him off it and onto mostly wet food.

It’s really hard to work out what food is good. The high protein grain free ‘paleo’ ones are decent though, as grain fillers can mean they’re hungry again fast and it makes them chunky.

It’s expensive especially on such a tight budget but I have Melbcat on Taste Of The Wild for her allergies and lucked into a fairly decent homebrand wet food she can eat

        source
      • StudChud@aussie.zone ⁨6⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Phew okay, so I literally just wrote out and took photos of all the food Mickey gets:

Dine wet food is the worst: it does not indicate at all what the Crude Ash % NOR Crude Fibre % is, so difficult to determine whether it has all vitamins and minerals, however the ingredient list, while small, does contain Taurine. And the ingredients are easy enough to Google.

Fancy Feast/Purina wet food is way more transparent, with crude ash, crude fat, crude fibre, and crude protein % listed, as well as having a detailed ingredient list that can be googled as well.

Fussy Cat Grain Free Dry Food (salmon, whitefish, olive oil flavour, 2.5kg bag) is okay, but also does not list crude ash % either, and while they do have an ingredient list it is quite vague (e.g. it lists Meat Meal but it could be poultry, fish, or beef derived). However, this brand does contain Omega Fatty Acids 3 and 6, which is not recognised as essential nutrients for cats by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles.

I think the better brands would be Hills Science Diet, however Mickey did not like it.

Trying to provide a well balance diet for cats is difficult due to each cat being very individual (same with humans, some can eat heaps of junk food and be fine, whereas other humans would get sick). It involves heaps of research to work out the best diet your cat can handle, which can be assisted by vet recommendations.

Contrary to popular belief, Vets are not paid by the cat food companies to shill food, they get maybe a branded notepad and pen, or merch. So a vet who specialises in cat diets, based on blood work, is almost essential for cats with diet issues (be it over or under weight, emesis, diarrhea, lethargy, etc).

I find that too… wish there was more regulation and transparency. I try to just get nutritionally complete and/or AAFCO certified food.

And it helps that Melbcat often gets her bloods done

I feel like my creativity is really suffering. I’ve tried to do more technical art exercises instead, I have really good references ready to go that will help me practice specific things, I have cheap materials I don’t mind burning through and I’m kind of starting to understand the concepts.

I’m just too sad and stressed out to do the work. Which can be repetitive, rigorous and carry the fear of failure.

It’s this stressful depressing environment. I’m constantly fielding other people’s craziness and bullshit to protect myself and have no energy left over for what I actually want to do.

And now a lot of stuff that used to be more stable is changing in unpredictable ways so it kind of worsens it

while I fully understand and support the “fuck you, pay me” and “act your wage” ethos of millennials and genZ, some of the stuff I’ve dealt with this week honestly has me wondering which one of us actually grew up inhaling leaded petrol fumes.

It’s the microplastics I suppose, that and hardly any millennial or genz will own their own home or do the great things they dreamed of doing.

It would make anyone resentful enough to just phone it in and not give a flying fuck.

But yeah, prolly the microplastics lol

Engagement Engagement - news and content designed to instill fear, distrust, and hopelessness in the name of capitalism, profits, and division between social classes.

This place is threatened by the new, unclear laws. Very few people here would want to provide IDs just to have a safe space to vent, and even less of us would be willing to give up our anonymity to continue having a community (WhatsApp, telegram, signal, even texting).

It will only further our disconnection from a wholesome safe space. While I do have a few people blocked on this thread, I come here for safety, for connection, and to be kind to those of us who need that. We are all human, and humans are social animals, for the gubmint to take away our anonymity is to deny humans the social connections they require to maintain a semblance of stable mental health.

It’s fucked up, the world, the government, the companies that seem intent on dividing us and removing our empathy to prevent us from organising and protesting. If we are too busy arguing with each other, then we cannot organise ourselves against the true evils of this world.

I don’t have much to say to provide hope in these dark times, as I also feel the weight of the world and the fears they ellicit. But for now, we still have each other, and that’s what I’m focusing on.

It doesn’t include online gaming or YouTube if that’s what you’re talking about.

How do you feel about gaming or everyone making shitpost videos for each other to comment on?

    • SituationCake@aussie.zone ⁨6⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Sounds like you are struggling. Yeah there’s some bad stuff out there but also lots of good. To live well we need to not fixate on things we can’t change. That’s a death spiral of frustration and anxiety and anger and overwhelm. Please reach out to people or services if you need to! For this forum, do you mean the SM age legislation? We don’t yet know exactly how it will work and I reckon with the speed that the government moves it could still be ages away until they figure out the tech required. And I’m sure some smart peoples will have some very easy solutions for how to stay anonymous anyways. I don’t think we are doomed, not right now anyway.

BTW I’m not entirely opposed to some controls on what kids can view in the internet, there is some nasty stuff out there that is really bad for the mental health of kids. I don’t know what the sensible compromise is though.

Last night toddler was dawdling through dinner. I asked him if he was still going and he nodded. I asked him to show me him eating something then. He looked at me like he didnt understand so I gestured eating something. His face lights up in recognition, picks up his fork and starts chewing on the handle.

    Art rambles/what I bought

That walk was a lot… I crashed and woke up now. Looking over my purchases. A $3 bottle of fluoro yellow poster paint. A bigger but still cheap set of beginner/student acrylic paints. The cheapest mathomat (for drawing circles to shade and drawing radial lines from a vanishing point) And a cheap set of kids binoculars to watch the maggies from a distance without alarming them. (I’m especially looking out for the one with a broken beak because I’m worried about its wellbeing.) I really wish that I’d just bought the $3 poster paint from the start because painting that small square of cardboard used up both my tiny tubes of yellow paint and it’s still patchy. I’ll go over it again a few times with the cheap fluoro. Doesn’t matter if it’s ugly. Those whiteflies better be lured into these homemade sticky traps. I have to say it was fun though. Been a bit paralysed to crack into the paints and even a crappy disposable project has taught me how the paint behaves and how I need to work to reduce the appearance of brushstrokes. It might help if I go on to doing stuff like priming surfaces and toned ground. I bought another paint set because it had very similar yellows to the ones I used up but also it had magenta. A lot of cheap sets leave it out but it’s considered a primary colour and apparently you can’t mix it yourself - you can try but you risk unwanted muddiness. I’m disappointed that it didn’t have a dark brown though. But I have the brown in the Kmart set. Bit of a mixed bag. There are a fair few secondary and tertiary colours I probably wouldn’t need, a few colours with proper names!!! but I’m not sure if they match up in colour to the standard of that name. There are particular colours I always look for because I know they’re foundational and would get heavy use and in 30 tubes it doesn’t have all the basics. But still. It was $9 on sale for 30 tubes with 2 cheap canvas boards included so it was an alright deal. Maybe if I look carefully and do some experimental mixes I can work out which tubes correspond to the standard colours called for. Maybe I just need more experience. If I can get off my butt and actually use these then I can budget for some better quality paints and buy the specific colours I want individually. (Which right now would be quite expensive.)

I can’t find the stupid Christmas Elf! For the last week or so my son has been making comments about how much he liked the mischief the Elf got up to.

So today I made an effort to locate it as I’m solo-parenting at the moment & need to be prepared for the 1st Dec. And I can’t find it! I know it’s here somewhere…

Some time ago on a lovely Saturday morning, I decided to do full on gardening. Weeding, trimming branches on trees, mowing…all that jazz. My reward was a cheeky beer when I felt I accomplished a fair bit. So off I went, starting at about 10:30 am. Felt like I was working for a solid 4-5 hours and had probably 4-5 beers. Realised I was a bit tipsy when all was done…and it was about 12:30. Managed to do all the work and get fairly sloshed.

Had a nap and woke up at like 4 pm with a mild hangover.

        Never again.

I did a bit of gardening early and still ended up dripping with sweat. It’s one of the worst things about wearing glasses - just sweating is not so bad, but it drips onto your glasses. I did get a bit of weeding done and planted some potatoes (and harvested a few from another patch too) so that’s something. Hopefully I will be able to get a bit done tomorrow, but it is predicted to be pretty wet so it might not be possible.
