My dear son wasn’t interested in staying up till midnight and also wanted someone to sleep with him. I volunteered as tribute. At 10pm.
His bed is not good for my back. He smacked me about in his sleep by accident (I think). I woke up every 2hrs and took ages to return to sleep. Around 3am he mumbled a “sorry” to me. But I think he was dreaming.
And now he is rejecting my pancakes.
I’ve had worse New Years. I’m gonna go eat pancakes.

Thanks but I’m kinda hoping it’s edible. Taking it to the in-laws today so should be interesting. Pecans kinda make it easy to look good.
Have another ready for my family on Boxing Day.

Thanks. I’m not a huge fan either but this one was a big success with others many years ago. And it looks decent.

Peacan pie success. Very happy. One is already in the fridge and this one is about to join it.

The tin is thinner than my old pie dish. Foil then baking paper?
Thank you for the suggestion.

Seeking advice from those who cook here…
I’m making a pecan pie. It’s a great recipe that I last made around 15 years ago when I owned a pie dish.
I no longer own the pie dish. I own a quiche tin with a loose base (that I last used maybe 20 years ago). I should really cook more.
- Should I cook my pecan pie in the quiche tin? I’m thinking it’ll turn out alright.
- Should I be able to remove pecan pie once cooled? This is my area of unknown.
I just want to avoid buying a replacement pie dish. I need to make 2 pecan pies (stupid promises were made).

Heater on. Long cardigan on. Cosy old man slippers on (with socks). Love Melbourne weather.
Now I’m ready to ice 4 batches of gingerbread and help my kid build a gingerbread house.

He does one song with his year group and a medley of song with his choir group.
They decided to cancel the event but record all the year groups doing their performances. It’s something.

My son’s school is hoping to have their outdoor Christmas Carols event this afternoon.
At this stage I’m thinking it’s a 50/50 possibility.
My son is singing Feliz Navidad - one of my all time faves.

You know what? I don’t drink anymore but I might grab a couple of coldies on the way home & see what happens. Might have to sample one to see if it’s palatable.

I can’t find the stupid Christmas Elf! For the last week or so my son has been making comments about how much he liked the mischief the Elf got up to.
So today I made an effort to locate it as I’m solo-parenting at the moment & need to be prepared for the 1st Dec. And I can’t find it! I know it’s here somewhere…
I’ve managed to score a new Elf (he’ll be a relative of some sort) and if the old one shows up we’ll tackle it then. New Elf is currently hidden in car.

I made a snap decision to go see it today. My session starts at 12:30.
As a 49yo who has been comic book reader/collector since i was 16 I want fun, fan service & clear dialogue (I think my hearing is going).
Have fun tomorrow.

Added bonus: my 9yo son is eating it! He can be ultra cautious with anything new. So watching him scoff it down is pretty heartwarming.

I’ve had my Mum’s vegetable soup since I moved out of home permanently at age 22. 28 years ago.
Today I finally made it.
Couldn’t fit in the pumpkin and I know I won’t get any rice in at the end but it’s ok. Added some minced garlic but stuck to the recipe otherwise.
Not exciting but warm and familiar and chunky.

Police helicopter circling near my kid’s school. Distracting…
In unrelated news: I have never clipped a cat’s claw before. When we adopted our void cat in February she desperately needed her claws clipped as they had curled under, almost pushing into her paw. We had them clipped at the vet and since then she has been great at using the many scratching posts we have. But I knew that if I could clip her claws it would be an added bonus.
Today, with the assistance of a treat, I did 3 claws! Just small clips and I stopped as it felt like an excellent start. No scratching or biting. One hiss but a bit of the treat helped her. Made sure not to go too low.

Thanks for anything & everything.

I have not cooked a roast anything in many, many years. But tonight WE ROAST!
Chicken is the beast of choice! With roast veg, cauliflower & cheese and peas.
I’m a boring, basic cook at best so this could go either way…

Aww! poor girl! I bet the relief you felt when you got her back was intense. Sounds like the rainy weather kept her close.
My girl just bolted. When she jumped the fence my heart dropped. We’re close to Scotchmans Creek and the foxes there that have been known to attack cats. She’s not much of a climber inside so seeing that just told me how panicked she was. Or determined.
Since she’s been back inside she’s had some bonus treats and resumed sitting in her favorite spot by the window.

My indoor cat just dashed through the door as I was going out. First time she has done this. I only adopted her almost a month.
Panic!
She jumped my fence which borders a large park. I grabbed a blanket, some food and went into the park, yelling her name but not really hopeful.
My son comes out yelling “Mum! She’s at the back door!”. He let’s her in and she bolts for a bed to hide under.
She can have all the pets and treats tonight. My heart rate is gonna take some time to recover.

It’s nice to be social but I’ve had my fill for this week. Need a lot of solo time to recharge.
Today is all about finding a farm stay for a mum-&-son weekend away in a couple of months, making tteokbokki for the first time and doing the ironing.
Loving this weather. Love this type of easy, light rain.
But first: coffee!
