Be careful on rough ground - go slow. Cats can get motion sickness, ask misha how i know.

I did not get the nice place I applied for on Monday despite offering 15/week more. At least they told me quick smart.
I may have good news with the other place though, pending clarification of some weird half baked email I got that was missing attachments. It’s painful how much I’ll be paying relative to the size, and lack of greenery, and noise, but I’m reframing it as like a temporary apartment stay to finish my studies. Because I only need to commit till about mid next year. And that means FREEDOM.
I will have to cull a lot, but at it’ll feel like I’m really committing to closing this chapter of my life. No more coasting along.
Cross all your digits for me DT! The sooner I’m done with this the better 🤞

Seem to have started early this year. Did some grocery shopping earlier and there’s so much pointless aggression.

I think the cost of living shit starting to seep through to even the landlord class is having an impact (though in their case I want to emphasise that taxes on investments isn’t a cost of living issue).
People are feeling under the pump. I’ve got half a mind to disappear to a monastery over the end of the year

Day was better. Went fairly quick.
Taking the Monday off for the long weekend. Some people are taking Friday as well… If I didn’t have a project kicking off that day I’d do the same.
indisin@aussie.zone 1 month ago
Kicking off a project on a Friday is a bad idea unless they’re expecting everyone to think about it all weekend and not be in wind down mode that day, it’s even worse to do it this specific weekend with a significant number of people having a 4-5 day weekend. The stakeholders are going to need a refresh on Wednesday, so might as well kick it off Wednesday.

Client insists. They’ve threatened to find another supplier if we don’t do it.
I know it’s going to fail miserably. I’m looking forward to the shit fest.
A little humility would do this client some good.

Beautiful afternoon. But what baffles me is how many people are in shorts or dresses. When my day started it was a chilly 12c so jeans it was. Do people just freeze for half the day for the 1 hour of nice weather, or do they carry around a change of clothes for when the sun comes out. I’ve lived in Melbourne all my life and still can’t figure it out.

Jesus that lineup for When We were Young 2025 should come with a NSFW warning, sporting a semi in the office. Ok, thats a lie. But I did gasp and moan slightly.
That line up is… I mean… F me dead thats must of punk rock royalty right there. That is gonna go OFF! I hate festivals, but if that weren’t in the states I’d be considering it.

Made it down the bellarine again. Down here there’s a place called Swan island where SAS train. Anyway the neighbour is ex-SAS. I’ve never really had a long conversation with the dude. Bumped into him as I was rocking up and he was walking his puppy said 'ello. I’VE NEVER BEEN MORE SCARED OF A KILLING MACHINE WALKING A PUPPY.

I freaking hate Debian. I do not like not being the owner of all files nor given easy tools to take ownership of stuff. And I’m spending a lot more time in terminal than I would like. I understand why me accessing and replacing files in VAR is a bad idea, I get why you might wanna prevent that. But its MY system, if I wanna crash the fucker than thats my right! Not having access to files for apps I install (like plex) is insane.

Meal prep for the next couple of days is done. Now I can start on dinner!
At least dinner is a kit so won’t take too much effort. I also made a few extra serves of oats and some burgers for the freezer so I have a head start on a few more future meals too.

The quiet little stick vac I was so hyped about is fine for quick touchups but struggling in the face of heaps of scattered litter and shredded cardboard… The other one is unreasonably loud so I keep it for the back room (away from the cat) and even then have to use earplugs.
It’s fine, with heavier stuff like this I’ll just sweep the carpet with the soft indoor broom. It’s more tiring and might kick up some dust but it’s silent. It’s really good for getting a lot of the pet hair as well.
I don’t really rate the Sabco carpet sweeper I bought. It is convenient in that it collects dust and debris as you go but the handle is too short so you have to hunch over, and you have to push it hard to get the bristles to sweep. It’s also hard to get into the corners.

Ah, once again Melbcat has medicine stuck in her fur… I’d wipe it off right away but by the time she’s had it she really wants to nick off, and I let her go calm down. So it dries into her fur and the liquid sets like concrete.
I might buy a bib just to reduce the amount of sponging with a face washer.

I’m gonna go on a little rant about Halloween. Kids, pets and even adults dressing up, meeting your neighbours having a bit fun. I’m all for that. Decorate your house inside and out. Great.
Now here’s the thing. People take this shit way to far. Instead of just walking a few streets with your kids, meeting new people, it’s now “let’s go and collect as much shit as possible from strangers before others get there”.
How do we do that? We will drive around in our people mover looking for houses because Facebook mums have posted where the best streets are for little Johnny to collect his treats and he’s only 3 and the size of a small hippo and he can’t walk far.
It’s now a car door slamming competition with a stampede. Aussies are great innovators. We take shit from around and we adapt them to suit us. Halloween is not one of them we do well.
MeanElevator@aussie.zone 1 month ago
I loved it back in Canada, cause it was the norm. Streets were full of kids and adults. 90% of houses were decorated and people got into the spirit of it.
Here it seems to forced and unnatural. Which is why we hand out caramel covered onions to all the trick or treaters.
CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 1 month ago
Let’s not forget the whole “I’ll post my address online so I can lure your children in for the promise of a candy bar”. Yikes.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 1 month ago
I’ve got no problem with the little Johnnys of this country. It’s the parents who are pimping their kids out so they can gorge on the fruits for ron.
melbaboutown@aussie.zone 1 month ago
These people sound greedy as hell, and in being this competitive are kind of missing the point of the exercise.
I love Halloween in theory but I deliberately play possum to avoid being approached by strangers’ children… or really anybody.
CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 1 month ago
I have high fences all around. No one can get in here.
PeelerSheila@aussie.zone 1 month ago
I find it an interesting opportunity to observe the different facets of human nature. I live in an area with lots of young families and I like seeing the hand crafted decorations that the family have made as a craft exercise. Who are the people who make their own, and who obviously spends way too much money on that stuff? Which children take only a small portion of treats, making sure there’s plenty left for other children, and who grabs repeated handfuls of treats or even pours the entire treat bowl into their goody bag! Which parents dress up and get out there mingling with others in the pleasant early evening, laughing and handing out treats? Which parents put a bowl out and play possum? Which parents deliberately ignore the blatant greed of their children and fiddle with their phone, or actively encourage their children to take all the treats! It is endlessly fascinating for me to observe and I am totally there for it.
