Or he just didnāt pay attention in class when it was taught. A lot of students treat history as irrelevant. It doesnāt help that a lot of public school history teachers are the equivalent of a dad watching World War 2 documentaries.

Iād say they made the attempt, but if he didnāt listen that much, the problem is them passing him, not attempting to teach him.
SailorFuzz@lemmy.world āØ18ā© āØhoursā© ago
that is definitely a problem of the US education system. The āno child left behindā policy is absolute garbage.
fuckwit_mcbumcrumble@lemmy.dbzer0.com āØ19ā© āØhoursā© ago
He doesnāt look that young. I canāt imagine somehow missing the post 9/11 fallout and the war in the Middle East. The 20 year anniversary of it wasnāt as extravagant as the 10 year. But as an American it was kinda hard to ignore.
If heās from outside the us and like just turned 18 maybe. But like how does one even miss all of the memes about it? I guess even those have died down too.
OwOarchist@pawb.social āØ18ā© āØhoursā© ago
He doesnāt look that young.
Eh, 9/11 was ~25 years ago. And if we assume that a child under the age of, say, 5 wouldnāt be interested in such things and wouldnāt be exposed to it much, especially if not in the US ⦠then someone could feasibly be up to 30 years old right now and have been too young to notice or care when 9/11 happened.
And I donāt know about your age standards ⦠but this guy looks like he could easily be under 30.
fuckwit_mcbumcrumble@lemmy.dbzer0.com āØ18ā© āØhoursā© ago
Iām very squarely in that age bracket and it was hard to ignore 9/11 if you were at all exposed to any media. I canāt imagine anyone 25-30 managing to entirely ignore 9/11 even without teachers talking about it. Maybe someone with the absolute peak of sheltering could ignore it. But outside of that I canāt imagine anyone in the US 25-30 having no clue.
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world āØ13ā© āØhoursā© ago
iād say anyone under 35 wasnāt really aware for it.
anguo@piefed.ca āØ13ā© āØhoursā© ago
35 might be an exaggeration, they would have been around 9 years old, old enough to remember something.
Bytemeister@lemmy.world āØ13ā© āØhoursā© ago
Yeah, this is definitely wrong. My younger brothers are significantly younger than 35 right now, and they still remember where they were when it happened.
Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com āØ6ā© āØhoursā© ago
What the hell is this coach thing?! No wonder some American schools have a teaching problem š±, itās already hard to get good teachers but letting mr run after the ball teach historyā¦
Baffled.
Rhaedas@fedia.io āØ20ā© āØhoursā© ago
History teachers in grade school seem to be either great or terrible. Nothing in between.
I can see someone born around then or after not understanding the scope of the event. I can think of things that happened when I was born or just a kid where even knowing about it later it just seems like something in a book. You can't know what a world was like before an event if you weren't aware of it.
How he escaped ever seeing more about it online is another thing, but then again I see lots of reaction videos, many that are probably legit, of people who never heard or saw things, even if they've heard references to it. It's yet another XKCD Ten Thousand moment.

When I was in schools, American history was Pilgrims, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, The Great Depression, and WWI. Then it was summer. We might have a school assembly in February to talk about MLK.
captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works āØ17ā© āØhoursā© ago
If you were to ask my teachers, American history goes revolutionary war, then nothing happens for awhile, then the civil war, then nothing happens for awhile, then WW1 had to happen so that we could have ourselves a WORLD WAR TWO! The four years that make up 9/10ths of American history. And then the Japanese signed the surrender on the deck of the USS Missouri and then stuff I-the boomer history teacher-personally remember so it legally canāt be history.
mineralfellow@lemmy.world āØ17ā© āØhoursā© ago
Itās so great that the US single handedly won the only war that ever happened in Asia. Good thing there hasnāt been any major conflict on that side of the world since then.
captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works āØ17ā© āØhoursā© ago
Itās kinda clear how the curriculum was designed, after all according to this class Japan was only discovered in 1939. Russia pops in an out of existence, Korea and Vietnam are fictional and Africa is where Egypt is.
SailorFuzz@lemmy.world āØ19ā© āØhoursā© ago
Did you finish school prior to 2001? Cuz, I mean, thatās everything I learned in school too at that time.
But my daughter is 13 now, and I can confirm that she has been formerly told about 9/11. I donāt think with as much detail as she will learn in her during her high school tenure, but she at least knows about it.
chiliedogg@lemmy.world āØ18ā© āØhoursā© ago
Oh yeah. I was in high school when 9/11 happened.
prettybunnys@piefed.social āØ17ā© āØhoursā© ago
My son asked me if I learned about 9/11 in school ⦠and I was like uh yes, in a way.
(I was sitting in my psych class watching it happen live)
OwOarchist@pawb.social āØ18ā© āØhoursā© ago
Yep. And with each successively later era in history being more and more rushed because the history teacher was always behind schedule and the big standardized tests at the end of the year ate up a lot of time.
And then next year, in the next history class, you start over at Pilgrims again!

It is more that the rich ensured that education focused primarily on the aesthetic horrors of fascism rather than its material origin. The impetus for bonapartist tendencies was never removed so it eventually returned as conditions necessitated. They rich could not admit it was the system they uphold and benefit from that gave rise to fascism without endangering their positions.
AnotherUsername@lemmy.ml āØ13ā© āØhoursā© ago
I want to invite the āaesthetic horrorsā but itās not āthe richā. Itās just human stupidity and laziness in trying to educate children.
