Using the thing of the enemy to destroy the other thing of the enemy… yeah that’s justice.

Faux-toshop is a nice name for it

I prefer Photoslop

I yearned to be a savior against injustice without contemplating the cost and by the time I looked down there was no longer any ground beneath my feet. What is my sacrifice? I’m condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them. I burn my decency for someone else’s future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I’ll never see.

Thanks, I guess I know what I’m rewatching next

Context?
SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Kind of maybe? There’s a lot of info flying around but the bottom line is that they rebuilt it in rust and it’s Ai slop code and sucks.
AmbitiousProcess@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
They used an AI model to repeatedly generate guesses of the code until it matched the compiled bytecode, then AI-generated new code based on the decompiled source to create a technically unique codebase that can do most of the same functions and looks extremely close to the original.
Has essentially every feature, but also bugs out a lot or has features that technically work, but not in the same way as Photoshop (e.g. magic wand selection tool might bug out and select stuff on more than one layer, and might be less accurate and selecting fine edges)
Tacky4092@feddit.org 3 weeks ago
It’s almost like it was vibe coded!
finalarbiter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
Somebody used ai to launder a leaked source. From what I understand, it’s about as functional as one can expect a fully slop coded project to be (barely).
irate944@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
It’s been found that LLMs are actually great at decompiling things. Whereas before this process was possible but very time consuming, LLMs can do it in hours/days depending on the software.
So there’s a group that is decompiling Adobe software and rewriting it in Rust, and then published the apps + rewritten code
Lauchmelder@feddit.org 3 weeks ago
So we have AIs turning proprietary software into open source software, and AIs rewriting open source software into proprietary software. Wonder what will happen if we run this in a loop
chunes@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Ever since the latest AI models have come out, closed source essentially ceased to be. You can get something closely resembling the original source code from just about any running binary now.

Yup.

I saw the LTT video on this. Seems I was right in thinking that the program isn’t smooth enough to be usable. I saw give it a few months and it might be a serious contender
Tattorack@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
How long until the “developers” drop this project because they have no idea what the code does or how to maintain it?

Full compatibility with Windows apps on Wine when?

Today!

Such thing does not exist and will never. The best example for this is NES emulation. There exist thousands of NES emulators, but almost none of them behave like the real chip in the few (though almost triple digits) edge cases that exist.
Now imagine that NES times 10.000 in complexity alone, and said edge cases, together with their number, increasing in complexity to the point that you cant just create a sheet of every case but also have to do this every time a new version of any used software gets released.
And of course you can combat this via something like protontricks, but you will never reach 100% compatibility via any of those methods
HertzDentalBar@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
No.
Blackfeathr@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I hope this means Photoshop will be functional on Linux sooner rather than later?
Doorbook@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
It is funny how adobe was one of the first company to steal people cloud images to train their ai. No AI stealing their entire company.

The Sloppening.
Honestly, I’m so here for this even though I hate slop.
NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
On one hand, the democratization of software we’re heading into is incredible.
On the other hand, as a software engineer, the democratization of software is horrifying.
I’m conflicted.

How are they handling the patents?
JoMiran@lemmy.ml 3 weeks ago
I applaud the troll aspect of it all, but imma stick with GIMP.
Dojan@pawb.social 3 weeks ago
Same. GIMP and Krita.
GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I adore Krita. Gimp is useful for exporting more esoteric file formats, but Krita does the heavy lifting in my artwork.
chocrates@piefed.world 3 weeks ago
Was gonna say, gimp is open source and mature, why the hell would users use this?
plateee@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
Because Photoshop is far superior to gimp for…. reasons? But Photoshop costs $$$$$, so this is like free.
/s
Honestly, the only thing not to like about GIMP is the name. There was a fork a while ago, but that closed down.
Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
It’s the whole suite of Adobe, not just photoshop
getartcraft.com/apps
chiliedogg@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Having used both for years, Photoshop is a better product by miles. It’s not even close.
Inkscape, QGIS, Blender, OBS, Jellyfin - there’s lots of GOSS products that blow the commercial stuff out of the water.
GIMP is not one of them.
HeHoXa@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
GIMP was always better anyway
And that is a purely objective take that has nothing to do with the fact that it’s the one I used first
