- Comment on Does the national Do Not Call Registry actually work? (USA) 6 days ago:
Call screening is actually one of the reasons I’ve been thinking about going back to a Pixel, I had that on my Pixel 5 and Fold.
Fortunately, the Google messages app (default for Android) does a half decent job of filtering spam texts for me. I go through the filter every couple days and just report them to my provider en masse.
- Comment on Does the national Do Not Call Registry actually work? (USA) 6 days ago:
The registry only works for legitimate companies that are playing by the rules. That is to say that it does jack shit, at least for me
I get dozens of spam calls and texts a day, mostly political in nature but with some good loan scams mixed in for variety.

Iirc, HC is pretty explicitly a troll instance

The thing that made federation make sense to me was comparing it to email. Email is a shared protocol and anyone who has an email address can send one to any other email address. There are lots of providers, like Google, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, etc, that all offer access to an email address.
I picked .world because why would I want LESS than the whole world. I mean I didn’t see an option for .universe. Later, I was criticized for picking a shitty one by some random guy.
You might make a Google account because gmail is the first email service you heard about, and realize that you disagree with the company or want different features, so you go make an email on Proton instead. From either platform, you can still receive email from Yahoo users and send it to them. However, you aren’t necessarily able to just ‘transfer’ your email account from provider to another
sure enough my post was deleted and I didn’t even understand the reason. I think it said something about me not belonging to the instance. So I’m thinking why did it let me post in the first place and why did it let them answer and if it’s technically possible to do it in the first place, why disallow it?
Sometimes, other providers might have rules about who is and is not allowed to send email to their platform. This is usually to protect against spam.
Where those actions are automatic upon receipt with email, that isn’t always the case on Lemmy. Reddit had similar rules in many communities, where people with new accounts or low karma weren’t allowed to post.
- Comment on Is 71° F (21° C) the ideal weather to wear shorts? 1 week ago:
Totally depends on what you’re comfortable with. I personally will wear shorts down to around 40°F (4.5°C).
- Comment on My friend is 31 and is constantly breaking out in acne. She also gets very irritated/argumentative before her period. Is this normal for her age? 2 weeks ago:
It’s cool that you care about your friend, but it’s inappropriate to be posting about another person’s medical issues unless you have their explicit consent.
Also, as others have said, the armchair doctors here cannot provide any real actionable information. If she is concerned, she should go see her primary care provider or a dermatologist.
- Comment on Earbud question: Does anyone actually like to silicone tipped earbuds over the solid plastic ones? 1 month ago:
I think that visualization dealt psychic damage to me lol.
My problem is that I have super waxy ears, so unless I cleaned them literally every time I used them, the silicone tips would just get uber crusty and gross.
- Comment on Earbud question: Does anyone actually like to silicone tipped earbuds over the solid plastic ones? 1 month ago:
I don’t really wear earbuds because I don’t actually like either style. The hard plastic ones are uncomfortable after 10-20 minutes for me and don’t stay in my ears. The soft tip ones get really gross and are difficult to clean well, but a decent pair comes with different sizes of tips to better fit my ears.
I have over-headphones that I like, but many of them tend to be uncomfortable after a few hours. I’ve actually come to really like my bone conduction earbuds for general listening because it just rests on my temples with minimal pressure and there’s nothing in my ears. They have pretty solid quality, but not audiophile-grade or anything like that.

Anyone who thinks people aren’t as shitty irl clearly haven’t worked in customer-facing roles, e.g. restaurants, retail, or support.
- Comment on What's going on with Olympic skiers and penises? 1 month ago:
From what I understand, this is something a German tabloid speculated on and the world ran with it. There’s currently no evidence this actually happened.
“This wild rumor started off a few weeks ago from pure hearsay,” FIS spokesperson Bruno Sassi told The Associated Press. “There has never been any indication, let alone evidence, that any competitor has ever made use of a hyaluronic acid injection to attempt to gain a competitive advantage.”
- Comment on Anon has a question 1 month ago:
This started to be a thing when I was in grade school. I remember my 7th grade history teacher not knowing how to respond when I asked if the salad bowl included the native Americans whose culture the US tried to destroy (I was a precocious smart-ass at the time)

Honestly my one critique of this is that if they manage to infect you with that ‘biotracker’, then they must already know where you are to do so. If not, how would the person they want to track be the only person infected with it? So then this tracker doesn’t really provide any new information. Maybe I’m overthinking it…

Anecdotally, something like gum or jerky to chew on helps me stave off highway hypnosis on longer road trips. I also find stopping and getting out to walk around for a few minutes helps fight the worst of it.

Try looking for a boot cut. It’s similar, kind of baggy and the cuff is oversized to fit over boots (hence the name)
