It’s a broader term than parent that includes people who have a different relationship but are ultimately raising the kid, like aunts/uncles, grandparents, foster parents, or anyone else who might be responsible for the kid.

Oh, I know that definition, but it sounded like the person I responded to met their guardian as a freshman.

Oh, gotcha. I read it as a conversation they had with their guardian that happened in their first year at college, not necessarily that the relationship started at that point.
