Didn’t read the article but just wanted to mention, they always did this for years

    source
    • Bbbbbbbbbbb@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

The articles first words are “for the past 10 years” and we are all sure its probably longer than that

Not only Gamescom, they are basically on every exhibition in Germany.

      Yep, it’s very standard.

Ok yeah, having admittedly only read the headline, my first thoughts were “this doesn’t seem that unusual”. They’re not the only military to do this kind of recruiting either. Hell, the US army actually made a videogame.

I almost got arrested at a job fair which was hosted at my school. I called out the fascist recruitment pigs for all their bullshit in a calm and polite fashion and got immediately surrounded by those fucktards, calling the copper swine on me. Until the headteacher noticed what went down and kicked them all out from the building. Until today, my old school has those cunts banned from ever attending again. He was having none of their crap. Based. This was ages ago, but he still has a lot of respect from me.

As much fun as a shooter can be, I would not want to die over and over in real life.

Also Germany banned and censored Killerspiele (killing games) for years and talked down on those creepy gamer bunch. But now that it’s convenient…

I’ll never forget the day a friend and I were leaving a gamestop and a us army recruiter approached us and said “Do you wanna live the Call of Duty life?”. I didn’t want to be disrespectful, so I said “No, I don’t think so.” and kept on walking. When we got back to my friend’s car I immediately said “Does he realize how many times I die in that game?” and we both burst out laughing.

Same in Italy. I’ve seen police/army booths in all gaming conventions I’ve took part in, even years before the the Ukraine war.

Maybe it’s an unpopular opinion, but I’m not particularly offended by it. I think it makes sense for cyber security/high tech jobs to look for recruits in a place that’s full of nerds that could fit the criteria. And I also know that there are many train/aviation/weapons enthusiasts in the gaming world who could do that shit for a living.

I don’t know anyone who was on the fence, and decided to enlist after visiting the army booth at Gamescom lol

The idea is, like of most marketing, probably more that some people might not have been very aware that it was an option and that there are these kinds of jobs in the army.

How many days has it been since a classified breach happened on the WarThunder forums?

It’s hilarious when they do it DEFCON. Do you want to join the military, what, again?

Everyone there is either already in the military or something military adjacent, or is a private contractor and definitely doesn’t want to join up.

        Or they hate the military

  • iamthetot@piefed.ca ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

I don’t have a ton of world experience, but I’ve attended a con every year for the past several years and there’s always army booths and police booths.

At most mid-size or larger festivals I’ve been to. Game, food, or music, you’ve got military recruitment, police, pretty much every local org,

Last time I was at ComiCon there was a booth for the US military and a booth for THC/CBD right next to each other and there was a pack of half a dozen furries checking out both of them.

Uhm. Not new? Is being done by almost any country on any bigger event? Including blue light forces? How is this even news?

The entire German Army is an cosplay- and neonazi social club, that’s what it’s there for. Oh, and for massive amounts of ammo to disappear and strangely reappear in the hands of far-right militias.

An international event is an odd place to try and recruit military. I would join up but I don’t understand a lick of German so that might inhibit my effectiveness and what. The best I can do is English in the stereotypical German accent, although obviously I will be writing names in my little black book, not sure if that would be acceptable or not.

    • qarbone@lemmy.world ⁨20⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

It’s cliche, yes, but anyone willing to immigrate to Germany to serve in their military deserves some extra scrutiny. Especially nowadays, with both the fascism and the impenetrable stupidity.

Given the advances in drones, they will need more people who can fly them and whatever else they invent. Video games sounds like the perfect hobby for the tech to do so.

Or we could just stop bombing brown people for no reason.

But we won’t. And theres enough gamers who lack empathy to train a whole new kind of soldier.

It’s also about just being familiar with the controllers in general.

This is a reconnaissance drone controller that doesn’t need that much experience FPV ones are a bit more involved.

Have you seen the weight on people play? I have shot down the same person repeatedly in Battlefield because they kept falling for the exact same tactic.

I was in a aviation event today, and they were also there. Germany has to reach a target of recruits because of NATO, and they are quitw a ways behind.
