Should I buy a Switch 2 despite owning an OLED?

I mean, when talking about battery life: the Switch 2 is shorter whilst the OLED has it last longer. The thing is, there are games I want to play that are exclusive to Switch 2 (like HW: Age of Imprisonment or DK Banaza), I do have a ToTK special edition OLED switch though. The only difference is performance (as it’s 1080p handheld supporting up to 4K at 120 fps).

They are increasing the console price worldwide, it’s ¥49,980 ($309 / 270€) as of now but later it’ll become ¥59,980 ($371 / 324€), so should I purchase it? Also the console will become $500 / 500€ (for now it remains at $450 / 470€) I’ve heard that a new variant is releasing in 2027 with a portable battery, even then is the console still worth purchasing?

    Everyone in this thread is like “don’t” and then refuses to offer a single alternative. Because there isn’t one. Not for the price or with the final bastion of physical media, if you care about that sort of thing. Some people just want to play games without spending eight hundred dollars on a Steam Deck. I am as baffled by most of Nintendos decisions as most people who spend too much time online, but holy fuck people, give it a rest.

    I’d like to play BoTW and ToTK, but I’m not gonna go spend money to do it.
    
    A) I have principles. B) Nintendo is a multibillion dollar international corporation, that’s recently started charging $80 for games that are most definitely not worth the price. C) save your money for actually useful shit like groceries and gas.

  Its called voting with your wallet. Voting only works if a significant number of people vote your way. There is no significant mass of people voting anti Nintendo. There probably never will be.

    Hmm, Nintendo count every dollar though, so it could still be meaningful. If there’s some tipping point with these things, I don’t think wet know where it is, so voting with your wallet still seems like good advice.

I think any console buy should be based on whether it has games that you want to play.

If there are games that you want, but not enough of them, you can always wait, these games aren’t going anywhere, and as a bonus you can get the EU battery variant, even if they don’t release OLED version anytime soon.

If you are sure you’ll want to buy one in next couple of years, even without OLED, and don’t care about the EU variant, then this might be a good time to buy one, before the price increases.

It all depends on your situation.

  This comment is pretty much the debate I had recently on this. Seems like the 2 will be able to handle some upcoming chunkier games/ports. Prices are probably gonna keep going up due to the data center takeover, so now is a good time to make a decision.

    The Nintendo fandom is unmatched even in their ability to take an absolute shafting from a company that would throw them down a river at the hint of emulating instead of paying full price for a 20 year old game.
    
    Of course this is coming from a guy that still owns a working gameboy color, so I can understand at least a little how the nostalgia and the ability of “Their old hardware was always so good” carrying a lot of weight of their newest product.
    
    This one that feels either overpriced for minor incremental upgrades being labeled as a whole new console (compare the ps1 to ps2 and you’ll see how little they’ve changed in the switch 1, to OLED, to switch 2.) Or actively enshittified to scrape more money out of their fans wallets, in my opinion.

Comments aside from people that don’t own any Switch in general, I enjoy mine. All of my Switch 1 games are improved by playing on the 2, whether just load times or more. If you have a large Switch 1 library, you will benefit. If you want any of the few Switch 2 exclusives, then get it. One year in, I do not think there are necessarily enough Switch 2 exclusive games to justify the cost of entry, if you don’t already have a library of Switch 1 games. That said, like you said, it probably won’t get any cheaper, so if you’re going to eventually get one, maybe think about it sooner. If you play handheld most of the time, maybe consider holding out for the OLED, which does not have a date, and rumors cannot give a date for. Reports indicate that Nintendo purchased OLED screens in March 2021. The Switch OLED was released in October 2021, so a 7 month gap. There have been no reports of Nintendo purchasing shipments of OLED screens that match the specs of the Switch 2.

I’m in the same boat as you, and I bought Switch 2 because prices are on the rise, and I didn’t want to invest heavily when the next Zelda game spawns (which most probably will be Switch 2 exclusive).

I bought Switch Oiled exclusively for BOTW and TOT, and I’m very happy with this decision. I live in BOTW, it’s a nice place just to travel around and enjoy.

I see a lot of hateful comments here; but for the most part I understand the sentiment. Anyways, I just made the switch last month specifically for Star Fox and I couldn’t be happier. I sold my OLED to offset the cost and used that to purchase the 2. Seems like you are thinking similarly so I’d only recommend it if you’re looking for S2 exclusives. It really is a lot better than the OLED and so much bigger, which is a noticeable difference in handheld mode. The upscaling in docker mode looks and performs way better too.

If you want to play Switch 2 games and are okay with getting a non-OLED at the cheapest price a Switch 2 will ever be, get one before the price increase. If you’re okay with paying more for an OLED model, wait until they inevitably release one.

Do you mostly play in TV-mode or portable? In the latter case, I’d wait for an OLED version of the Switch 2 personally, as the current model has a screen that’s pretty mid and which will definitely feel like a downgrade from Switch OLED.

    The main issues of Switch 2’s display are an extremely slow response time as well as prominent ghosting/blur. You can see some measurements here for example. It’s not too bad when it comes to color reproduction and of course it’s higher resolution, so I guess it depends on how much you care about motion clarity and response time compared to that.

I have my OLED switch and bought a NW2 for Pokopia, Winds/Waves, TOTK upgrade, and DK.

Nintendo makes the best AAA games and if they aren’t out now they will be. OoT is out this fall and that alone is worth the purchase.

My OLED will be a backup for the future. Great little device and who knows maybe it’ll be jailbroken someday like my 3DS.

I planned to not buy one - I was against it on launch for all the reasons and, yet, I was gifted one.

I have bought a few games but I mostly use it for playing my Switch 1 games. IF you play games with long loading times, it’s a reasonable upgrade. Age of Imprisonment is just more Musou so if that’s your thing, it might be worth it, but honestly if you’re not into ALL of the current releases, I would wait or buy it secondhand.

Play older games you own or indie games. No need to give megacorps your money. They’ll just keep raising the price if you do while laying off their employees and adding more subscriptions to inferior products.

  Its expected that the Switch 2 will increase in price and then on top of it, the OLED edition will be even more expensive probably. In todays day and age, holding off in hope of better deal or hardware is no longer the best default option. Unless you really want an OLED, then there is no other way than waiting.

As someone who has both the Switch 2 and the Switch 1 OLED, I appreciate the performance boost that some of my games get with the 2, but I miss my OLED after giving it to my partner. I have even borrowed it a few times for handheld play because of the better screen and longer battery life.

Ultimately it’s up to you and how badly you want to play Switch 2 exclusives right now. Devs are going to keep making Switch 1 compatible games for years, especially given current global economic trends and the scaling back of larger game dev studios.

Personally, I would wait for Nintendo to make a Switch 2 with a better display. The display on mine is full of ghosting and once you notice it, you can’t un-see it and it’s disappointing.

I was in the same situation as you (though in the US so that replaceable battery model likely won’t release here), I desired to get a Switch 2 despite having a TOTK OLED simply because of Switch 2 exclusives like the upcoming Fire Emblem. I have a perfectly good working console that’s more aesthetically pleasing than a Switch 2, better screen albeit smaller, with accessories that would be useless with an upgrade.

With the price hike imminent, I bit the bullet and bought one. For me it was at least a bit easier as I had gift cards to bring down the price. As much as I dislike Nintendo’s practices, I have to admit that they’ve given me enough reason to buy one by now.

I’ll likely sell my Switch 1. Might hold onto it for a little. I’m not really sure.
