That’s not the mayor of Toronto, that’s the premier of the province of Ontario. His younger brother was the crackhead mayor of Toronto.
I mean, he thinks he’s the mayor of Toronto, and really only wants to be mayor of Toronto, so…
If he’s not Mayor of Toronto why is he banning speed cameras and tellings bars when to open?
Alcohol laws fall under provincial control. The rest is because he’s holding a grudge for us not electing him as mayor. He’s only happy when Toronto isn’t.
Don’t forget banning bike lanes, changing the number of council members.
I guess in Canada they elect the most punchable face only
I doubt that they require bars to stay open until 4 AM. It sounds more like they lifted the mandate to close earlier.
I am always for less restrictions, so this sounds actually like a good change.
I actually think later bar hours are better. In countries where bars are open later, there doesn’t tend to be an end of the night rush out the door into the streets. People tend to leave when they’re done and it staggers the exodus somewhat. Way less fights in the street after the bars close.
Bars here in Japan are often open until first train in the big cities (~5am) with some going later. I don’t necessarily see anything wrong with that in itself (especially for late shift folks who want to enjoy the same after-work experiences as day shift folks).
That said, fuck this guy for many other reasons.
Wait there are no trains in Japan at night? In Frankfurt there used to be none between like 3am and 5am. Sucked pretty hard when you missed the train and had to wait for the first one. Slept quite often at a station at the time. Now trains run all night albeit on a slow schedule.
I remember when i visited I thought it was kind of crazy. Basically the main time for nightlife goes until last train and it’s a mad dash of people trying to catch the last train to get home otherwise your Basically stranded for the night which then your options are hotels or a very expensive taxi.
Where I live, we don’t have trains, only buses. The last one is at 6:30pm. The first ones are ~6am. Honestly though, the only people taking the bus here are either too young to drive, or too old to drive. But our bars are open 24/7/365. If you don’t count the COVID lockdowns, my local bar has been open 24/7 every day since 1987.
Maintenance is done at night and, when that’s not happening, they run freight trains. In Tokyo, last train used to be like 1:30ish on some lines and started up again a bit before 5am. Now it’s more like a bit after midnight and starting again closer to 5am. JR is a private company (a group of them, actually) and they keep squeezing things further, presumably for more profit.
They did start a bus line between nightlife areas a few years ago, but it never got popular and was closed (and also just took drunk people around from one party area to the next and not home).
This guy really only cares about alcohol. Billions of dollars of provincial money spend on liquor contracts that would have expired in a year or two.
That was a hilarious press conference.
Took so long to empty that bottle lol
While he does stupid media stunts like this, he passes laws so no one can see what’s on his burner phones
Ford Nation is alcoholics.
The percent of votes cast to keep this fat fuck in power equals the estimate of percent alcoholics in Ontario by CAMH.
The same idiot Mayor who banned speed cameras and watched speeding increase by 235%?
Who could have predicted that?
Wait. Whats wrong with this? As someone in a city with 24 hours bars and clubs, I’m not understanding the problem. What exactly is the gripe?
I’m just making fun of the fact that all the games are in North America.
He extended bar hours so everyone can enjoy the games at 4am but there won’t be any games at 4am in Toronto
He’s the Premiere of Ontario not the Mayor of Toronto.
Ah gotcha
If Pierre Poilievre is “trump lite” then Doug Ford is “trump heavy”.
That’s not mayor Wong.
Holy shit. It’s Olivia Chow.
Oh god. My bad. I have no idea why I got the name wrong there.
Wong is useless. Doug is de facto Mayor. Apparently lemmy doesn’t get it.
When his crackhead brother died the monkey’s paw curled and now we’re stuck with this 250 pound mosquito
Wait this isnt Rob Ford?
No this is Doug, he’s the premier of Ontario right now. They both crawled out of the same hellish crevice though
We had the same thing happen in Kansas City.
Missouri State Government passed a bill which would allow bars in Kansas City, MO to stay open 23 hours a day.
But Mayor Lucas passed a city ordinance which “vetoes” the state law, prohibiting bars within the city from opening for 23 hours.
There was a bar, Blueline Hockey Bar, who went to social media blasting the mayor.
Finally, the mayor walked back his steps and passed a motion allowing bars to stay open for 23 hours.
This ordinance only allows Kansas City bars to stay open 23 hours a day throughout the World Cup games.
Fifa world cup? Hmm. Maybe he wants it in place for next world cup, which might be in a different country. But, knowing he might not be mayor in 4 or 5 years time, he put it in place now, so everyone will remember him as ‘the guy who let us watch football’
They don’t need to, it’s not a law, it’s an extension. Also, some cities like Toronto need specific licence (or something like that) to stay late open.
And I don’t get your problem, it’s a one time thing.
Plonkers.
You missed the joke. For a guy who is not Mayor of Toronto, he passes a lot of laws overriding the municipal laws of Toronto.
Truly what the people of Canada needed right now…
Top 3 dumbest person on the planet honestly
no…that would be the millions who vote for him again and again.
Fell for it again-award kind of vibe

Why are they requiring bars to close by 4am? Just drop the restriction entirely. If you want to get shitfaced at 6am then go ahead.

This! When I was young, we used to stay at clubs so late that it was a bit light out when we came out. Grab some breakfast, and sleep the day away.

The same reason half of Europe has closed shops on Sunday, worker protection.
You need strong laws to not have businesses abusing and pressuring peoples to work the shity 14h shift till morning for earning a peanut.
And workers protection law + North America are not often put in the same sentence.
Also it’s generally not worth it business wise. Paying salaries and more from 2 to 4 (or 6am or whatever) to sell two beers means losing money. You might have a few festive nights here and there, but most of the weeks/months you’ll have an empty bar.

Allowing bars to stay open is not the same as requiring them to stay open. Owners won’t keep a bar open 24 hours if there isn’t any business.
zikzak025@lemmy.world 5 days ago
That sounds more like countries enforcing a religious preference (day of rest on Sunday for church) than worker protection. I suppose it could be branded as secular, but so can France’s ban on wearing hijabs in the name of laïcité.

They only state they can stay open until 4am. It doesn’t mention what time they reopen. My sister’s bar opens at 6am or so. Supposedly for night shift workers.
MintyFresh@lemmy.world 1 day ago
I used to be that night shift worker. I was so grateful for that one bar in town that opened in the morning. Nothing like ending the work week with a bloody Mary at sunrise!

Because there is good data showing extended drinking hours have higher rates of violence and drunk driving. No one is getting refreshment at 4am, they are getting shit faced.
bobzer@lemmy.zip 5 days ago
I reserve the right to get shitfaced at 4am.
So glad I don’t live in a nanny state.
Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 5 days ago
Really? I heard the opposite, kicking everyone out at the same time results in them fighting more because you have a load of them all at once.
backalleycoyote@lemmy.today 5 days ago
Nah, there’s no way soccer fans getting shithoused for hours on end while watching a friendly match would ever get rowdy. /s
Karmanopoly@lemmy.world 6 days ago
There needs to be games at 6am though
Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 6 days ago
There are other reasons to go to the pub. Half of the ones I go to don’t even have screens. Though they are also not places I would want to go at 6am. They would probably choose not to open at that time anyway.
My point is the government shouldn’t be dictating the allowed opening hours. Regulations on staff working conditions is totally fine so having staff working 18 hour shifts is clearly bullshit, but if you want to hire enough staff to cover opening hours like that then you should be allowed to.
zeroConnection@programming.dev 6 days ago
So a late shift worker cannot go to a bar to enjoy a pint after work, because he finishes at 4 and there are no more games this late? What logic is that?
9point6@lemmy.world 6 days ago
Why?
If a venue sees it as worth it to deal with the calibre of piss-head you get at 6am, have at it, I say
Local businesses get to make more profit and the government gets more tax from consumption duty

We’ll just have the leaving late-night crowd play against the arriving day drinkers crowd.
