People have questions. If you do not understand the spirit of this community why do you participate by making people less likely to ask questions they are unsure about?
If this is not against the rules it should be. Comments like this should be removed.

bible. ewwww. definately would go with lord of the rings if im limited on what fantasy stories I could read.
Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I wouldn’t think about any religion at all.
Well, maybe I’d read some Norse mythology. I’m not very familiar with that and some of it sounds pretty interesting.
HubertManne@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
ooh norse is the best myth wise. best stories to me. I mean lokis whole arc is great.
GreenBeard@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
If you think Loki is fun, you should try the Fenian Cycle of Irish/Gaelic mythology. You’d probably get a kick out of the kid raised by his aunt the druidess and her warrior-woman “Roommate” who goes on to fight a giant boar, become a genius by sucking his thumb while cooking salmon, and to become leader of the high king’s own mercenary company after discovering his divine heritage.

I would remain indifferent towards all religions.
AnchoriteMagus@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I have zero interest in the Bible beyond the initial curiosity that led me to read it 30 years ago. Once was enough.
If the only books available to me are the texts of world religions, give me the myths and sagas of the Nordic peoples. At least they invented the modern novel and have stuff that’s entertaining to read.
nocturne@slrpnk.net 3 weeks ago
Are those my only choices? There are no other books than the bible or "other religions "?
notsosure@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
I happen to be in jail just now, so I can consider myself a bid of an expert on this dopic. I’ve noticed that the paper of the quaran is rougher than the average bible paper, so the answer should be clear.
markz@suppo.fi 3 weeks ago
I probably would have zero interest in either unless I was bored to death.
Ja7sh_The_Donkey@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
Wassup with the down voting??
cuboc@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I did not vote, but the premise that I would read any religious text when I’m in jail is prepostorous.
axh@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
it turns out “nostupidquestion” for some people means “do not post stupid questions” instead of “there are no stupid questions”.
I up voted, because I still believe the second meaning is correct and people shouldn’t worry about posting questions here.
But I have to admit, I see absolutely no relation between the “if” part and the “would you” part of this question, which makes it really weird for me.
axh@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Also the assumption that people would “stick with the Bible” ignores the “dozens” of people in the world who are not Christians… They might be a bit upset about that.
Solumbran@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
When a question tries to make you swallow a bullshit payload, if feels like a manipulative question rather than a stupid one.
This post implies that the obvious norms are:
- you already are reading the bible and believe in it
- you would want to read it in prison, and could
- the only alternative is to go into other religious books and religions
If someone asks “are black people the only inferior ones, or is it the case for asian people too?” it’s not a stupid question, it’s not even a question, it’s an attack. And while there is more room for doubt in the question of the post, it is still loaded with religious propaganda which is shitty as fuck.
zxqwas@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
The question itself is fine but the presumption in the question that there exists no people with different faith or opinion, or that they are not worth asking rubbed me the wrong way.

Obvious troll is obvious
HiTekRedNek@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I’m in jail 8 hours a day, 5 days a week sometimes more if something breaks.
I have absolutely zero interest in some “magic” book about a megalomaniacal sky daddy.
Fuck off with that.
southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
I dunno, I think weed is too hard to get in jail, and bibles as rolling papers aren’t as good as people think
RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Plenty of other works of fiction in the prison library. No need to read any religious book.
flambonkscious@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
What would jail have to do with it?
You know you can just go to a library, right? (You don’t need to be in jail, buddy)
HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Didnt read it before jail, didnt read it in jail, not gonna read it after jail.
Read a bunch of other books tho.
drdiddlybadger@pawb.social 3 weeks ago
I’d probably expand to the bhagavad gita or something. The bible is kind of boring tbh.
captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I’d probably just stay pagan
zzffyfajzkzhnsweqm@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
While I consider myself to be Ignostic, I find lots of wisdom in religious texts. I am selective. I use what I consider useful and I reject what might go against logic/my values/is conflicting with itself…
Since I was raised christian I would study only bible (from religious texts) since I think there are enough wisdom in it to study for a lifetime.
However this would not be the only thing I would read. Most of the time I would read other books. Maybe some philosophical ones and if I would get a hand on some books from other religions I would probably read it.
hoohoohoot@fedinsfw.app 3 weeks ago
Christianity is my reason to live, and I am not kidding, 30 minutes ago I decided that Id rather go to prison for even 10 years than kill myself
Walk_blesseD@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
nah, not really tbh
FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
I’d probably read other books
Nemo@slrpnk.net 3 weeks ago
I would stick with the Bible and read more about Buddhism.
Entertainmeonly@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
Why would i read a religious text if i had access to an actual library?
bryndos@fedia.io 3 weeks ago
Get the biggest one for emergency toilet paper.

FYSA, pre-crumpling the pages multiple times will loosen the paper fibers; makes it softer
