- Comment on What is a router ? 4 days ago:
It is a woodworking tool that accepts various bits that rotate at a high rate of speed. It routs, or hollows out an area. It is used in cabinet making and for moulding production.
They are great for making different kinds of joins, as well as decorative edges.

- Comment on How did we get "bike" from "bicycle"? 1 week ago:
Bike (n.)
Etymology
Clipping of bicycle. First attested in 1882.
One explanation for the form with /k/ is that bicycle was parsed to bi(cy)c(le). An alternative explanation is that it was parsed to bic(ycle) but since speakers are aware of a general /k/~/s/ alternation (as in electric ~ electricity etc.), the softened /s/ was restored to a default /k/ when the “ending” -ycle was dropped.[1] Similar cases are merc /mɜɹk/, spec /spɛk/ for mercenary, specify. It seems unlikely, however, that this process is purely phonological and not at least partially based on the spelling ⟨c⟩.
- Comment on How do you vet a person asking to be a mod? Unlike others don't want to read their entire post history. How come pretty much no one is asking to be a mod on c/askhistorians? 1 week ago:
The only way to vet a mod is their history.
Exactly, otherwise you likely will end up with ancient homophobic young earther modding !askhistorians@lemmy.world again.

- Comment on On an open source platform, I'm supposed to be able to change my username/display name, right ? 1 week ago:
The app I use shows your user name, but if I go to your profile I see both.
- Comment on On an open source platform, I'm supposed to be able to change my username/display name, right ? 1 week ago:
For example, I can change my username here on this instance.
Wrong, you can change your display name, but your username must remain the same. If your username is changed by an admin it brakes federation for your account and your posts and comments will only be visible on your local instance.

- Comment on Why when I rent an Apt I need to have the electric turned on first? I spent my first year of contracting living out my car to save all the money I could. Shouldn't the land lord do that not you? 2 weeks ago:
When I lived in central Maryland we had that option. Now, in rural New Mexico, no.
In Maryland we only had the choice of what company generated the electricity, not who our power company was.

- Comment on Is it true that you can't drink alcohol in a commercial? Like Shane Gillis pointed out to Post Malone in their commercial? 3 weeks ago:
Also, it would be very uncommon for an entire commercial, or other production, to do an entire dining scene in a single take. So the actors would be having to drink multiple times the amount shown on screen… likely having a much different quality of acting ability in the later takes than the initial.
- Comment on How do people with ADD and ADHD watch movies or shows??? 3 weeks ago:
