    Also, for whatever reason (capitalism?) searching 529 also searches bikeindex, but bikes registered on 529 do not appear on bikeindex https://project529.com/garage/

    this is useless. nobody does this or keeps a database of them.

    the only use it has is for warranty claims, or if you have it for you own bike you can use to verify you own it with the police, if they reclaim it. but that virtually never happens.

  Many police services have a serial number lookup. Some people also post what was stolen so a quick search helps too.

  Only buy bikes being sold at a fair (not suspiciously low) price* from sellers who can answer questions about specs/condition/history.

  (* Being offered a bike for free from somebody who wants to get rid of it is an exception to this, obviously.)

  Bought dozens of used bikes over the years, very low chance any of them was stolen.

    What makes you so confident? The person selling the bike might have little or no knowledge or connection to the theft.

  Maybe call the area’s non emergency number and see based on the serial? But that still isn’t perfect and gonna be hard to do unless they give it to you which seems doubtful.

  Best practice is “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is”. If they want $25 for a $2.5k bike, it’s probably stolen or you’re going to be mugged/stabbed by a psycho.

  There should be a serial number somewhere on the body (usually on the bottom or front of the frame up toward the handlebar forks) you can look up to see if it has been reported stolen.

  If the plate has been removed or scratched off that would be one indicator it might be stolen, but there is always a chance it was stolen, not altered, and simply never reported stolen.
