This study out of Duke University discusses some effects on births of 9/11. As best I can tell, the effects are mostly a reduced number of men relative to the number of women, increased prematurity, and reduced weight at birth, mostly attributed to the stress the mothers experienced during pregnancy.
Not anywhere near to the extent that the 2008 crash did
i have the strong feeling they want to mock us by publishing it as pdf, the data in columns. like come on! is there a worse format?
just from looking at it i’m searching for a reason why the first monday in september is low on births both in 2001 and 2002?
i feel like you would have to look at more years than those two to remove seasonal effects that take place every year.
You should be looking at June birthdays. Those are people conceived in Sept.
September birthdays are the result of December holiday parties. Trust me, I have 3 kids with Sept birthdays.

I’ve never seen a study on it. There may well be some limited effect within the US for that specific period, but I’d be very surprised if it persisted. It could have also gone the other way… a bunch of people decided it was ‘the end-times’, so they all had unprotected sex like crazy to cope and ‘go out with a bang’ (pun intended).

I’ve done no research, but I highly doubt it.
We shouldn’t expect any change in people’s activity before the 11th, because it was a surprise. I imagine there were quite a few people who weren’t “in the mood” on the 11th, but how long would that last? Possibly a while in NYC, but I’m betting most of the people Midwest got their libido back in a day or two.
Considering that pregnancy isn’t an exact science, and that a child conceived a week before or after 9-11 could have born exactly 9 months after 9-11, I don’t think we’d see a major drop in births around that time. Maybe a little, but probably nothing significant.

My wife and I got married less than a week after 911. The wedding was already planned, not a let’s hurry up and get married wedding. We wasted no time consumating. We were living outside DC at the time.
