Marry? Sure! Reproduce? Nah, we’ll stick to hiking, video games, and anarchist gardening, thanks.

How do you grow an anarchist?

    Children are not economically viable.

    • ZeDoTelhado@lemmy.world ⁨22⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

You may be half joking, but I’ve discussed this many times with my partner. Society, by today’s definition, do not reward at all having kids. However, for a society to keep going you **need ** children, so wtf is supposed to happen? No children, society just grows old at at some point you have a massive decline in the younger brackets? And then is just old folks yelling at clouds? Also, anothet detail, the mono parental lifestyle we have nowadays is actually quite recent. And I do think is very much impossible to have the expected amount of children on such system

Every society values status and wealth. This time we’ve taken that to the extreme, to the exclusion of everything else. It’s going to be one of the failed experiments in history.

Ancient Greece even had those episodes where the rich managed to get farmers deep in debt. A bunch of them just left. Another bunch became serfs. The end result was productivity tanking and food security becoming problematic. Cue debt relief, changing laws, … The rich will always fuck it up for everybody and themselves given enough time, sometimes they learn, and they do it all again a century later.

It’s okay. Elon said AI and his robots will mean we’ll all be rich on UBI soon, so he wants everyone to have more kids.

there’s a lot of negative feedback loops in nature (it sounds negative but is actually a positive thing). it means that when you have a tendency going one way, then that creates a counter-pressure which makes the tendency go the other way.

so if people have less children today, that somehow will make it more attractive for future generations to have more children. in the end, it will oscillate (go up and down) until it stabilizes around a stable value. so no worries, it’s gonna be fine.

But without children, who will fight your forever wars and be trafficked by the Oligarchs who want to create 24/7 mass surveillance with live facial recognition tracking?

I would be so fucking rich without a family! I can live on ramen and gaming (I am 41, and this never changed), sobI would have like 80% of disposable income up for saving

The rich have bought out trailer parks. And the factories where they make trailers. So even going that route is being exploited.

Oh you can’t find a partner even willing to get married and reproduce right now?

They just keep repeating the same nonsense on loop like:

    “Are you literally insane?”

“Have you even noticed the present reality we’re living in?”

“I could be charged with a crime just for having complications during pregnancy.”

“They hooked a braindead woman in Georgia up to life support last year like a human incubator. She had tried to go to the ER the day before because of a painful headache. Instead of helping her they gave her 2 aspirin and sent her home where she suffered a brain aneurysm.”

“They literally just sent her away when she sought their help, but after declaring her braindead they decided to actually admit her to the hospital.”

“They made her family wait to remove her from life support until she had given birth to a premature baby. The baby was born with multiple birth defects he will struggle with for the rest of his life.”

“Of course they aren’t even giving him healthcare or helping to pay his medical bills. They kept his mother alive like some kind of science experiment from the Handmaid’s Tale, and demanded he be born simply to refuse to help him survive.”

“Because it turns out the world is literally run by completely sadistic pedophiles. They don’t even need an Epstein anymore because now they’re legally allowed to kidnap and traffick children!”

“They’re splitting families apart and holding them indefinitely in concentration camps. There’s been multiple documented cases of sexual assault by guards, and we’re just letting it happen. Now they’re buying up warehouses across the country to convert into more camps!”

“How can you even think about something like that?! They’re dragging us into an endless WWIII just to distract from the pedophiles and help corporations increase their profits! What the fuck do you think they’re planning to do with all these kids they’re trying to force us to give birth to?”

Psssh, sounds like typical unhinged feminism. Destroying the American dream.

Thank God I’ve never run into whomever you have. I just hear:

      “It’ll happen when it’s time.”

“You’ve got your entire life ahead of you still.”

“Don’t rush into it; enjoy your single years.”

Ugh… Time is running out each day, I’m half way to my old years, and i HAVE enjoyed being single. Now I’m ready to move forward.

Is a “third space” really an issue for people? Affordability really solves everything.

    source
    • stormeuh@lemmy.world ⁨9⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

      Yes, because:

      • a small apartment is more comfortable when you have other spaces where you can exist for free
      • in our increasingly isolated society we need more spaces for serendipitous socializing

It does tie into affordability though, because the lack of third spaces is in itself an indication of an over-exploited real-estate market. A third space is almost by definition not maximally exploited, because you’re allowing non-paying patrons to take space which could be used by paying ones. Allowing non-paying patrons is only a moral question up to some point, after that it’s just the market forcing the choice between more exploitation or bankruptcy.

    • reksas@sopuli.xyz ⁨7⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Expectation to spend money sidelines all the people who cant afford it. Its not nice to sit somewhere and watch everyone else buying stuff and knowing you yourself cant.

Third spaces = freedom to come and go and stay as you please.

Try going to some cafe and never buy anything at all, but spend entire day there. See how it goes for you.

Is there a time besides maybe the 2010s where people had more disposable income ? What 3rd spaces did we have decades ago that we do not now ?

We have surrendered the future to religious extremists which is pretty depressing

What 3rd spaces did we have decades ago that we do not now ?

It’s not necessarily that they’re entirely gone, but there’s fewer of them, and they may not be as accessible. Off the top of my head, a few examples might be things like:

      • Public libraries
      • Social clubs/Youth clubs
      • Open spaces
      • Skate parks/outdoor gyms

Some communities are managing to hang on to their third spaces, or even create new ones, but it seems to be very uneven.

in the 1990s we would gather in giant rooms full of people smoking cigarettes, and we would put small metal discs into machines so we could yell at people for sucking at video games in person and it was a kind of church for many
