Bugger. House is a no, I’ve withdrawn my application. The current tenant was there and very informative. Cooling is broken and the landlord has been refusing to fix it, heating is a bit dodgy too. Looks like they bought it 7 years ago and failed to do even the bare minimum maintenance since then.

So back to square 1 ☹️

    source
    • Seagoon_@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

When legal requirements like heating are not functional what are the duties of a REAs?

      source
      • RustyRaven@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

It’s an urgent repair that should have been done ASAP. The fact that it’s not done, plus the fact the agent is not even on top of what type of heating and cooling are in the property, is a major red flag.

        source
    • Duenan@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Sounds like you managed to dodge a bad one there.

Maybe you need Mr Woof to sniff out the bad ones.

    • tombruzzo@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Thank god for such an honest tenant. If only landlords world realise they’re people too

      source
    • melbaboutown@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Oh damn. I’m sorry. It’s at least good you were warned and dodged a lemon.

      source
      • RustyRaven@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Yeah. There were a bunch of other things wrong too which I could have lived with (primarily cosmetic stuff, like damaged paint and old carpet). It was pretty concerning that the real estate agent didn’t even seem to know what the heating and cooling in the property actually were, they were advertising things as current that had obviously been replaced years ago, and even the replacements were broken!

I did get to pat the owner’s puppy though, so there was some good.

        source
    • just_kitten@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Bugger. That tenant is a dead set legend though. I guess you are sadly getting the full brunt of what renting is like now. Mad prices for poorly maintained holes, lying abound…

      source
      • RustyRaven@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Yeah, some of it is not good. I did go to another place this afternoon which was really great. But it also had about 30 people at the inspection, and I heard one women asking if she can still make an offer of higher rent. So I don’t think I have any chance at that one, but at least it was not a depressing hellhole.

I have another inspection lined up for Saturday, and a few for Tuesday. Trying to keep track of them all, plus whether I have inspecte/applied for etc. is becoming a challenge.

Oh well, worst case scenario I end up living in the van, which is really quite roomy…

I have landed in the Soup. Say what you will about this place, you gotta give kudos to Changi airport - 15 minutes from deplaning to cab. Was expecting to wait for my bags - nope, merrily halfway down the conveyor belt along with its fellow passengers. And I got to use the completely passportless lane for citizens/residents… it’s almost freakishly fast (like 2 seconds total kind of fast). A good reminder of how biometrics are harder to hack than a passport. They probably have every inch of my face mapped out.

Anyway, can’t wait to have a big sumptuous dinner and then crash early. I finished the last 5% of Overstory on the plane and got all riled up about what my life has become. Then I reread Howl’s Moving Castle because I had it on my Kindle. Now I feel less cynical.

Got through to bag drop with 10 minutes and 1kg to spare. Just waiting to board now… whew! I’m lucky I managed to take all these other goodies including fresh loaves from Woodfrog.

I hate these cattle class flights to the Soup, so many people who can’t follow instructions and mill around in queues trying to board first even though there’s a strict sequence

Anyone living a bit more rural?

I have a bottle of wolf urine previously acquired to deal with a fox issue at the old place. I do not have a fox issue at the new place and consequently I do not need a bottle of wolf urine at new place. I do not want a bottle of wolf urine at new place, which has all its storage in the basement.

Please come take my wolf urine 🙏

    source
    • underwatermagpies@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

How exactly does the wolf urine get in the bottle? That would not be a fun job.

      source
      • Bottom_racer@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

First you have to catcha the wolf

Then you have to patta the wolf

I’m not sure about the bottle part

And then you have to getta yourself to the ED.

    • RustyRaven@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

There are more foxes in urban areas than rural. There was one on top of my shed last night in fact. I do not however want a bottle of wolf urine to deal with it 🤣

      source
    • Catfish@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I am need of a possum deterrent but also do not want a bottle of wolf urine. The down sides of such a substance massively outweigh the possibility it might work.

    • MeanElevator@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Can you just dump it around your area?

      source

    Down the bellarine again.

Still have the leak that the plumber couldn’t find but getting close! So have to run down the block and turn the tank water on and off after use. 1 minute showers :( Filling buckets for watering, washing clothes by hand in the sink, flushing the dunny every 2nd time.

Reminds me of stage 4 water restrictions back in the day with the millennium drought. Only difference is back then used to also bring a bucket into the shower and keep grey water from the rare use of the washing machine for plants. Those were the days.

Really makes you appreciate running water that works unlike a lot of the world.

    • underwatermagpies@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Watch out for Bucket Back! The physios did well out of the drought.

      source
    • Eagle@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I’ve been gardening this morning and lamenting over how dry it is. And it brought back my own memories of establishing the garden here during that drought and i remember standing in buckets in the shower to catch every last drop.

In case I’m not the last person to know, three out of three medical professionals recommended Coca Cola for removing a piece of dinner lodged in my throat. It took a couple of hours, but it worked. 10/10 would recommend but also 0/10 would definitely not recommend.

    source
    • RustyRaven@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

That sounds horribly unpleasant, I’m glad the cola solution worked.

That urgent care clinic was the one I went to for my finger impalement. The last time I was in Bayswater that entire building didn’t exist, it was all quite a surprise.

      source
      • gmask1@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I did know that there was a Coles in Bayswater, I had no idea there were shops on the lower level. I hope they were able to help de-impale your finger, that sounds equally unpleasant.

    • melbaboutown@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Yes, dark soft drinks often contain phosphoric acid and so can help break up bezoars or flush blockages in feeding tubes too.

      I hope you’re alright now

      source
      • gmask1@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I’m better, thanks and thanks also for the info. I ended up at Box Hill before the coke finally worked. The doctor had just given us the update that the fast track wait time was out to 2 hours and recommended that I just keep sipping it.

    • SpinMeAround@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

That’s some interesting knowledge, thanks for sharing! Hope you’re okay, that doesn’t sound fun at all.

I called the medical clinic to see if they were running on time before I made my way there. As I hate waiting around, like most people. Was told to turn up at appointment time as doctor was running in time. Only one person ahead of me apparently. 30 mins after appointment, have still not been seen. Why do I bother.

    source
    • Bottom_racer@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

      Heaps of reasons.

It turns into a cascade. They might have a patient(s) before you where the consult is more complex and needs more time. Which leads to more paperwork before the next. Your problem might be more complex and so on. Then some might overbook due to no shows (pretty common in rona times), also sometimes greed from the doctor. Sometimes poor management from the secretary.

If the cascade starts early in the day, the poor souls at the end of the day (including doc and staff)…

      source
    • Seagoon_@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

doctor’s appointments are not organised in a way we would do ourselves

they kinda do blocks and a few people get assigned into that block of time, and then it’s a first come first seen basis

so if your appointment is for 10.30 that means you are in that block, not that you will be seen at 10.30

      source
    • MeanElevator@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

In my experience, clinics are never honest on the phone. But when you show up, all of a sudden it’s a different story.

      source
    • dumblederp@aussie.zone ⁨4⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

One of the many reasons I ditched my old doctor was that hey was always late even when I booked the first appointment of the day. He’d wander in late, say the same excuse about traffic every time and proceed to be a shit gp in general.

If anyone was thinking of popping in to Northcote Plaza this morning, don’t. The Aldi carpark is closed- lots of caution tape- and the rest of the joint is bedlam. Super busy and the main carpark has a real chaotic, angry energy. There were actual fights breaking out.

I thought of a fun idea for the trip back: girlfriend takes the train up to Shepparton, we meet her there when we get there, do the handover and the boys can take the train to Donnybrook where I’ll meet up with them to finish the trip back.

They get to see mum again, ride a train, and they’re not strapped down for the last leg of the ride
