I know a few couples like that. I also have a 16 year old daughter with plenty of 16(ish) year old friends. For the life of me, I cannot fathom what a 30+ year old man could see in a 16/17 year old girl, other than maybe being easily manipulated. That may be enough. Cause it’s definitely not their personal hygiene, conversation abilities, or depth of experience in any given area.

Himself, likely

I don’t actually know any 16 year-olds. But are they into Roblox? I thought that was more of an 8–14 y/o type thing?

Tiktok is a great learning tool. If you spend a bit getting the algorithm right.

It’s mostly this and a little bit of women their own age being smart enough to recognise the red flags they’re constantly blaring

I remember when Emma Watson turned 18, and there were websites that counted down to it. Same for Lindsay Lohan. It was so creepy, and also weirdly presented as ‘normal dude behavior’ back in the aughts. I’m glad that’s no longer acceptable. It always gave me the ick.
Obviously, when I was a teenager I would have found teenagers attractive. But I’m no longer a teenager. And as the years have progressed, so have my preferences.
I couldn’t pinpoint an exact time when it occurred, but now when I see someone younger than like, 30, I just am not attracted. Sure, I can appreciate someone aesthetically without being attracted to them, but really, that has a cut-off, too. Anyone younger than their mid 20’s just does not look good to me.
At a base, physical, level, they look wrong to my eyes. Their faces aren’t done being formed, and they don’t have adult bodies. (Younglings, if you’re reading this, rest assured, you look great, and I’m just an old twisted weirdo with specific tastes. My attraction is not worth your self-confidence.) Let alone all the maturity, social, and experience-related differences that occur as a result of those age gaps. (Younglings, again - this is something you cannot help, and is not something that you can change without becoming an old twisted weirdo yourself. So don’t worry about it. My approval is free, and not worth the paper it’s printed on, if I printed it on paper.)jubilationtcornpone@sh.itjust.works 1 day ago

I’m with you there. Anyone who looks at a person and thinks “I can’t wait until they’re 18 and legally fuckable” needs to go spend some time seriously re-examining their life choices.

This is great btw. There are some awesome things that come with getting older. Maybe not hair loss or joint pain. Or the decline of your metabolism that happens in your early 20’s when you’ve finished growing.
You’re gonna lose the “cool” factor. You will. It’s inevitable. But you won’t care. I’m 35. I like myself now. I don’t give a shit what other people think of me and 99.9% of the time they’re not thinking about me at all. My 30’s have been my favorite decade so far. I would have thought you were crazy if you told 16 year old me that was gonna happen.

I’m a 30+ year old man, and women in their early 20s are foreign enough.
The only things I can think of are power and control, and maybe the youth=pure thing? I mean from the appearance stand point there’s really nothing different for women into their 20s, if anything they dress in different styles.
The lack of intellectual, emotional, and social maturity is really off-putting. Hell, I remember personal hygiene was an issue for some girls when I was in college. The number that didn’t wear deodorant was concerning enough.

I dated someone younger than me for a couple months. She kept asking me if I knew of “such and such” or “did you know they make that this way” or “have you ever heard this band from the 90’s” or “did you know about this”. Essentially she was still discovering a lot of things in life that I already well aware of, then I had the realization she was way too young for me. Plus she was horrible at sex, way too inexperienced

Depends on country, that would be legal in Sweden. Seen as suspicious and perhaps frowned upon, but perfectly legal.

Your brother is older than your mom?
Monument@lemmy.sdf.org 1 day ago
My wife has a half-sister that is 24 years younger than her, and she’s not even the oldest in her family. I think the full age spread is about 31 years.
Sort of a similar deal. Her mom and dad split when she was young. Dad had a whoops/miracle baby with his new wife, who is only a year or two older than his eldest daughter. She was 26, I think, when they met and apparently pursued him despite his protests until he gave in and dated her. So it’s maybe weird, but not standard issue creepy. The baby happened around 7 years into their relationship.

Age is only a number. It’s perfectly legal to write those numbers in octals instead of decimals… That would still make it illegal in most western countries though.

age is only a number, and buckshot is only metal (:

It sounds like they started dating when she was 16, which means as gross as it is, it’s not illegal in most places. Unless there was some sort of grooming, which is definitely possible given they first met when she was 15, but nothing we’ve been told in the story lets us determine for sure that it’s illegal.
As for octal, you can’t write 9 in octal, so we know 1984 has to be base 10 at a minimum.
abbadon420@lemm.ee 1 day ago
You can write 1984 in octal as 3700. But I meant that 16 in octal is 20, most often 18 is the age at which you’re officially an adult. Maybe “age of consent” is something different, but it’s nasty.
FelixCress@lemmy.world 1 day ago

It’s 16 (it says they started dating “year after”) so perfectly legal in most western countries.

There was no scenario in which this age difference wouldn’t make things awkward, but there’s scenarios where it would make things more awkward!
greenhorn@lemm.ee 1 day ago
That’s the same age difference between me and my dad, and bigger than my mom and me. And I don’t want to date someone more than 5 years younger/older

Something similar happened to my brother when he realized our parent’s wedding anniversary wasn’t too long after his birthday and they were married the same number of years as his age… 😬
zurohki@aussie.zone 1 day ago
Yeah… One of my great great grandmothers, nobody was ever allowed to know how old she was while she was alive. It was this weird mystery.
Turns out if you knew her age you could easily count backwards and work out that when she got married she was 13 years old and about four months pregnant.
dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 1 day ago
My grandmother was 11 when she got married to her first husband. Her folks married her off to a 35 year old man. Not my grandfather. His name was Bost. She never would tell anyone his first name, she never wanted to talk about him. Had one daughter with him and he died. Never officially married my grandfather, but had several kids with him years later, and everyone thought they were married. But she also had several kids from other men, and told everyone they were his, but even the kids she admitted to (she actually sold several of her children to various people, including a few family member. Sold my uncle twice and got him back both times) she gave them all different last names, but said they were all granddaddy’s.
She was crazy. Wonderful Grandma, mind you. But absolutely should never have had kids, violent woman with severe mental illness that mellowed out in her old age (mostly). So great grandma, but not a good mom. Used to wake the kids up randomly at like 3 in the morning on school nights and do white glove tests on their room, then lock herself in the bathroom with a butcher knife and scream at them through the door that she was going to kill herself because they were so ungrateful. One time she beat my aunt so badly she bled from her vagina for a couple days. When one of the daughters she sold showed up in adulthood, she was a deaf woman.grandma refused to acknowledge she was in the room, and then mocked her for making “those noises.”
I firmly blame all of that on her essentially being sold as a sex slave at 11 years old. Me and my mom also have a theory that Bost never really existed, and that it was her father who got her pregnant, but that’s entirely unsubstantiated. Just a theory. She had somewhere around 13 kids, but only admitted to 6 or 7, depending on the day.
