Hmm… my health is deteriorating and it may now be time for invasive medical measures. That’s if I can pester hard enough for them or pay privately. Love that for me

Oh I’m sorry Melba. I hope you’re doing alright

Don’t be afraid to be an arsehole if that’s what you need to do to get the healthcare you need.

Anyone else follow the Farside Lemmy? The cartoons by Gary Larson?

My dad has two of his books of comics and I used to read them all the time as a kid. The Lemmy for it is so damn nostalgic lol

I guarantee that’s how my dad got those books, prolly a birthday present from his sister or mum. I have them now, because I still go through them lol it’s fun seeing a comic online and being like “oh! I have that one!” 😂

Such a far cry from the days when it was hard to find Far Side comics online because Gary Larson didn’t like it. The genie has long since been out of the bottle. We had a big collection at home growing up and there are so many cultural/environmental references I only began to understand in my 20s.

I’m still trying to figure out the point of it all, personally. But if this is the sort of shit you’re into, then save it until Friday.

What a weird system. Went to the post office to have my mail held. What an annoying little system the post office has. They need 3 full business days notice, so it wouldn’t start until the day before I get back. Then he said he couldn’t give me the concession rate because I need a concession card. I showed him my concession card and then he said his system doesn’t allow concessions for people under 18…

Ended up not bothering with it. I’m just gonna hope my mail doesn’t go missing

I honestly thought the mail would be held at the local post office, but apparently they hold it at the sorting facilities

Okay, I signed up specifically to ask this question…

Does anyone have recommendations for a travel debit card please? Need mostly GBP & EUR for this trip, but there’s a couple other European currencies too.

From what I’ve researched, the Wise & Up Bank cards are coming up a bit, and the Macquarie one is too. I have an account with Macquarie already, but anything else I’d have to open a new account, which in not against for the best option.

    source
    • wscholermann@aussie.zone ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

In reality you should take two cards on your trip just in case you lose one, or one doesn’t work.

For me I used my ING card, which provides 100% full fee rebate on the first 5 eligible fee incurring ATM withdrawal transactions made on the account in that month (excludes International ATM operator fees).

My second card was a wise card. You can load the currency you want on the card and use wise set exchange rate, which is very reasonable. In terms of fees, each calendar month you have a free withdrawal allowance (varies by currency and country) — you can withdraw money up to that amount without any variable fees .

A variable fee changes based on how much you withdraw (and the country). For example, if your card was issued in the EEA, your card has a 1.75% variable fee. If you withdraw 100 EUR, then the variable fee would be 1.75 EUR.

Wise charge the variable fee for every withdrawal on your Wise card over your monthly allowance, regardless of how many times you made a withdrawal that month.

In all cases, often the biggest fee is the foreign atm charging like a wounded bull that your financial institution has no control over (I’m looking at you Thailand and your 7 dollar withdrawal fees).

Something else to be aware of is Aussie banks rejecting foreign transactions. Recently overseas I tried to pay for a hotel with an ING card and ING kept rejecting the payment despite me telling them I was overseas. In this scenario I used my Wise Card instead and all was good, so just be aware that Australian Banks in general can be really annoying when you are overseas.

      source
    • tone212_@aussie.zone ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Have a look at BankWest. They have no foreign transaction fees, free ATM withdrawals (excluding ATM operator fees) and importantly, no minimum deposit or use requirements to activate these benefits. With ING, you need to jump certain hurdles to get the foreign use benefits.

Macquarie may have the same benefits as BankWest, double check this because then you don’t need to open a new account.

I also have a credit card just in case and I use it for any hotel or car rental security deposits that get refunded - look at Latitude 28 Degrees.

      source
    • dumblederp@aussie.zone ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Most cards charge a percentage of currency exchange of 3%. Some cards also charge an international transaction fee which is bullshit. I’ve got a 3% card, so when I tapngo $1000 bucks on random holiday shit, I pay and extra $30, which is okay for me.

TV review. Daybreak. Netflix. A bargain basement Ferris Bueller living in Los Angeles survives nuclear war . For a show like this to have any chance of working it has to be believable. Sorry but Glendale would be evaporated and those in the outmost suburbs of LA would sicken from radiation poisoning. If the premise is a weird guy in a normal world then the normal world has to be consistent and believable. Maybe if they lived in a teeny tiny town out in the desert they might have survived. Not even Matthew Broderick reprising Ben Stein’s role as the boring and slightly obsessive principal could save this show.

    Compare to Fallout.

This show was so dismissive of the facts of nuclear war it upset me.

It’s an old Nintendo console code that Baku is about 20 years too young to have first-hand knowledge of. But it lives on as an Internet meme.

It’s funny, I keep wondering what tidbits of culture will go on as time goes by. I remember loads of stuff from the late 70’s and early 80’s that nobody else seems to relate to. Things like bits from the Paul Hogan show, “tiny Tina” (a 5-year old Tina Arena), heaps of songs and advertising jingles.

Other stuff survives. Like the Konami code. Why this code and not “IDDQD”? I can never predict what stuff will get retained.

Does anybody care about a decommissioned control tower from 1966?? What a waste of money.

    source
    • SituationCake@aussie.zone ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Unless it can be turned into something interesting for public use, like an observation tower, I don’t see the point of keeping it. Not everything has physical historical value worth preserving. Pull it down, plant a tree instead and make a pocket park where people can sit at lunchtime. Put up a plaque or info board if they are really keen, call it tower park and maximise the utility of public space. Anyway, welcome to my Ted talk for city planning.

      source
      • bull@aussie.zone ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Totally agree. I can imagine there’s like 15 people who’d be like “oh yeah my dad used to work in that tower I think” who might have the slightest nostalgia for it. If it was the tower which welcomed in the first ships to Melbourne or something I’d be better with it but it’s just a piece of industry from 57 years ago which happens to be tall.
