Shit! Do you have any mates that might be able to cover for you? Like be a reference for you at all?

      source
    • melbaboutown@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

I feel like there should totally be a group of people who band together to act as each others reference when they don’t otherwise have anybody. Mutual aid and all that.

      Fiverr? Do they do that?

It depends on giving out your names and possibly details tho, and the referring person answering unknown numbers.

I like that they said they were shutting it down at 11pm. I think evening park raves are a great idea given how much everything costs usually. We need to make more use of our 3rd spaces.

It is strangely satisfying when your side of a minor Reddit argument gets the most upvotes. Also slightly disturbing, given that this feeling is what no doubt fuels unhealthy pile-ons where everyone wants to join in on the “winning side” and abandons rational argument entirely. I should be the better person and focus on the benefits of thoughtful and reasoned discussion over competitive point scoring. But just for a little bit I’m going with HA HA you petty judgemental b*&% I win.

Friend came over and we moved off the last of the planter boxes from my balcony. It’s so sad and empty now. And it’s an effing pain to go pick some herbs or water my plants or anything - gotta exit my apt, go down two sets of steps, open the main door, walk 300m, back up another flight… plants are in a more exposed area too, I worry about the curry leaf plants. I see the snails have already gotten to some of my seedlings in absence of my maintenance. :/

I really hope the landlord gets the balcony fixed soon because it’s denying me use of space that I’m paying for. If she drags it out thinking it’s a bonus for her to have all my pesky plants in the common area and not on her balcony, I’ll definitely contact Tenants Vic to figure out my options.

Hate that the rental market is such that I don’t have much leverage to say fuck you I’ll move. (also as much as I’m tired of the area I live in, it’s so close to my new job that I’m not sure I do want to move further out for now).

Gonna try and not stew on this and instead get to work reorganising and watering everything + applying copper tape on all the pots not just the biggest ones

So much Eurovision drama. Boost has been disqualified for… something. Meanwhile myf and Joel’s commentary of Israel was just… I mean Joel opened in with a loud audible sigh. That sort of tells you everything. Norways jury voice has pulled out, Ireland are pissed at Israel, meanwhile Israel somehow got through with one of the weaker songs of the night? Crazy stuff.

Sadly I won’t be checking any socials between now and tomorrow night when I’ve watched the grand final, but maaaaaaaan spewing I’m gonna miss the updates in between cause it sounds like the Dutch and Irish are about to go to war with the EBU.

    • just_kitten@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

I keep forgetting about Eurovision every year but this year my funny reminder of it was randomly looking through SmartTraveller advice out of curiosity and seeing Sweden on the “exercise a high degree of caution” list because… Eurovision results are out soon and there may be unrest.

The worst part of the plant stuff is done. I still need to repot my manzano and prune back the red hot poker, and buy some veg to make dinner and meals for the next few days. Plus figure out what to do with all this rosemary I pruned off, and stock up on some oil and rice so I don’t need to do it after my trip…

…and despite all my going on about it, I’ve yet to start on my scotch bonnet pepper ferment. I gotta do that today so I can move that plant out onto the common area too.

Plus I still haven’t organised a full itinerary for my trip in 10 days time, I have an idea of where to go but need to sort out accom asap…

Argh, I want to just lie down and enjoy the rest of the day! I have a busy week ahead next week too, stuff on after work every single day 😫 and the weekend needs to be set aside for packing. I think I need to really be disciplined with my work end times the next week. No hanging around for a yarn

    • Seagoon_@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

      Good luck and same here.

I have a lot of household and garden tasks, necessary shopping and I feel very motivated to do lots of art practice. I will have to start getting up early if I want to get stuff done!! 😊 Thankfully I am bored with tv and politics/news now so that won’t be wasting my time.

      source
      • just_kitten@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

It’s definitely a good feeling to be away from the news/politics, not draining my energy unnecessarily. Though I find I am still tempted to retreat into online spaces/phone when I need some downtime and am stressed out or annoyed by people, I’d like to find some other outlets that I’ll actually stick to.

Google timeline for April just arrived. According to Google the highlights of my month were a trip to the dentist in Blackburn South, followed by my exciting shopping trip to Supercheap Auto to get headlight bulbs. Sadly, I think this may be accurate 🤣

@RustyRaven @Seagoon_ I used to live near Blackburn when I was growing up.

It's a very, very, very quiet suburb.

I'm not sure how it would count as a highlight?

      source
      • RustyRaven@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

It counts as a highlight by being pretty much the only place I have been outside of home and work. It’s definitely an improvement on some of those lockdown months where the highlight was stopping for petrol on the way home from work.

@Seagoon_ Not the weekend I was planning for.

I was planning on seeing an art exhibition that a friend recommended.

Unfortunately, this morning we discovered Miss Mimi seems to have conjunctivitis, which set wifey off on an anxiety attack.

So we didn't end up seeing the art exhibition.

(Miss Mimi will need to visit the vet tomorrow.)

On the upside, I have started packing for my trip in two weeks.

A restful weekend seems to have helped with the flu I've been nursing for the past week.

@Seagoon_ So recently, I've been thinking about possibly getting a buzzcut.

I don't think I'd be brave enough to go for a full buzzcut, plus I like having long hair.

But maybe a half-shaved head? Or an undercut?

Has anyone else here had one? If so, what was the reaction?

    source
    • dumblederp@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

The shaved bits get colder. Maybe spend winter considering your options with a plan to get a cut as it gets warmer. Ex’s with shaved heads have mentioned that there can be a bit of a stigma with some people about a woman with a shaved head. Maybe it’s just that fuckheads are drawn to bother anyone who stands out.

      source
      • ajsadauskas@aus.social ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

        @dumblederp Really good point 😊

My hair is starting to get a bit too long at the moment — it's well-past shoulder length. It's regularly getting quite knotty and the split ends are getting bad. So I'll need a cut soon.

Maybe just get it trimmed or cut shorter this time and leave the big buzz for when it gets warmer?

        source
    • Seagoon_@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

Maybe get a really really short hair cut that is shaped and flattering

      source
      • ajsadauskas@aus.social ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

@Seagoon_ Great suggestion — maybe a short bob cut? Or even a pixie cut?

        source
    • Taleya@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

Look up pixie fades. I’ve been rocking one for decades soooo much less bullshit

      source
      • ajsadauskas@aus.social ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

        @Taleya I just did a quick Google search — great suggestion 😊

        source
    • just_kitten@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

I have had an undercut for a while, people generally think it’s cool. Can be a bit chilly in winter. One downside, it does need some maintenance - a half grown out undercut is very weird…

      source
      • ajsadauskas@aus.social ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

@just_kitten I'd imagine that'd be one of the big downsides with a half-shaved head: The awkward grow-out phase afterwards 🫤

        source
    • melbaboutown@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

I’ve had buzzed sides with longer hair in the middle, and could decide whether to hairspray it straight up or brush it down over the sides. Really liked it. I’ve considered a full buzz cut for practicality, but maintenance and that would probably get more targeted by fuckheads.

Now I just cannot be fucked with anything or anybody and keep it cut short enough to brush but long enough to tie back

      source
    • StudChud@aussie.zone ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

I have an undercut, mainly because my hair is so thick I overheat easily. If I wear my hair down you cannot really tell I have one lol.

Most people didn’t mind, my dad and his side didn’t care in the slightest, and I couldn’t care less what mum thinks lol (I’m no contact anyway these days).

Workplaces haven’t cared at all, as long as it’s neat and clean, of course.

3 times I have shaved it down to the skin/light fuzz, usually after I had been dyeing my hair (10+ yrs black, shaved, pink/red/purple, shaved, then a blonde streak in my fringe, then shaved), and the most anyone has said was “omg do you have cancer” 😑😅 and I just said no, just wanted to shave it after dyeing so the hair grows back healthy.

      source
      • ajsadauskas@aus.social ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

@StudChud My three big concerns with getting a full shave are how it will look, how work will react, and random dickheads. That, and it's getting a bit chilly this time of the year.

How did people at your work react to the shave?

And did you get many randos making comments about it?

Another tobacco shop arsoned. Is it terrible that seeing as I don’t smoke or vape or participate in illegal tobacco gang warfare, I don’t care one bit. If they wanna bomb each other out of existence, probably works out just fine for the rest of us.

Repotted my manzano but made a total mess of the living room when I picked up a lemon plant (that wasn’t doing anything) by the stem - despite knowing better - and the whole thing came out, scattering wet potting mix all over the place and onto my couch 😭

But it’s all been tidied up. Made a decent dinner of pasta with tuna, roast fennel (the last! I swear!), roast Brussels sprouts, and a “cheesy” sauce of nutritional yeast and pasta water with a splash of soy milk. Clothes are in, dishwasher loaded, shower had, and… I simply can’t handle any more responsibility for the day.

I did finally pick the scotch bonnets, but I can’t even think about that right now. someone ferment them for me idk why I’m so lazy to just throw them in brine.

    juicy lil chillos

a bowl of lil yellow hot peppers!

Closing out the evening with an episode of tales from the loop - the writing may be uneven, but the VIBES of this show are just perfect. On episode 6 tonight. This is such a good one… heart breaking.

It’s been a weird day. I napped through most of it and had a gnarly nightmare.

Also sharpening graphite pencils last night with a plastic handled boxcutter to practice has kind of left me with a soreness/blister on my non-dominant thumb (where I use it on the back of the blade to give an added push). Maybe I’m doing it wrong. I’ve definitely had to learn to take smaller thinner flatter slices and work more slowly backwards from the tip but perhaps the blade is still a bit dull or I’m doing it in a way that needs more force.

I also keep nicking/scraping the lead but holding the blade flatter and moving it rapidly up and down isn’t really removing the slivers of wood from the core like the book says it will. Maybe the smaller thinner slices mean the wood doesn’t just get fully chipped off. But bigger slices need more force and risks chipping or breaking the lead which only goes up with the more delicate charcoal pencils. In fact I think I did a slightly better job when I first started out on the charcoal pencils from random Youtubes and an old craft knife.

I’m now watching a different video and switching up thumbs for a slightly different technique. www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5_13OFfjas
