Either your dish soap sucks ass, or your technique does if washing doesn’t get rid of grease and oil the first time.
psx_crab@lemmy.zip 17 hours ago
Everytime i still feel the oil on the container, i’ll just wash my sponge and squeeze some a fresh new dish soap and wash with it. Usually clean afterward, it’s almost always the grease-soaked sponge.
PrimeMinisterKeyes@leminal.space 13 hours ago
It’s either that, or not rinsing the dirty dishes with tap water before starting the soap-cleaning procedure. Salt, in particular, totally wrecks the cleaning power of the soap. There’s an entire science around this, actually.
exasperation@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 hours ago
I find that it’s more effective to put detergent on the dish, scrub with wet sponge, rinse. That keeps the detergent at high concentration at the surface, where the action happens. Detergent on the sponge, on the other hand, tends to migrate away towards the center of the sponge.
I switched from soaping the sponge to soaping the dish like 10 years ago and never looked back.

In this scenario I would add some dishwasher powder to some hot water and leave it for a while, the enzymes digest the fats and can be much more effective in some circumstances

Have you considered it is not the dish but perhaps your greasy sausage fingers?
Food for thought.

I like my fingers deep-fried. Slides right of the bone.

Saw a cool trick on IG, bit wasteful but works if you really want to save the container (I agree we should switch away from plastics - someday…). Piece of paper towel or napkin, drop of dish soap, a splash of hot water, close tight and shake thoroughly so the paper goes all around the inside, remove paper, rinse, wash normally.

Should get glass or metal containers if you can afford it or if you can sneak them into your bag/inner coat pocket.
jnod4@lemmy.ca 13 hours ago
Can you microwave the metal ones? Aren’t you gonna burn your hands off when you try to remove them from microwave? Can the ceramic one survive being put in a shared fridge where people might drop your lunchbag when they try to pull out yours? Will it survive in a pannier bag on a bike on a commute?
Plastic wins in many of my scenarios

Can you microwave the metal ones?
You really shouldn’t be microwaving food in plastic. A lot of them claim to be safe for the microwave, which is technically true. However pretty much all plastics degrades and become volatile under a certain amount of heat, and microwave ovens can become very hot in very unpredictable ways.
Most plastics will start to undergo polymer deformation around 200 degrees and start to release volatile organic compounds, which is a pretty normal temp for your average microwave over to regularly get to.

Pro tip: use actual soap, the one you wash your hands with. Works way better for oils.
Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 13 hours ago
I would expect them to have a shitload of alkalines in them, not acid… Acids dont do much to fat, and bar soap is alkaline
SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 13 hours ago
I started thinking that surely you’re right, remembering that alkaline bile helps digest lipids. But, hard soap does in fact contain over 70% fatty acids while ultimately somehow being alkaline.
THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 1 day ago
That’s when it becomes a problem for the dishwasher.
Leviathan@lemmy.world 16 hours ago
Dawn directly on sponge, I never have this problem.
FluidBeef@quokk.au 16 hours ago
You mean leave it out where the Sun’s first light will catch it?
Leviathan@lemmy.world 2 hours ago
Exactly
Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 15 hours ago
its the same taking a bath. after the first swipe, youre wiping with that filth in a steadily increasing amount. the dirt never goes completely away in a tub
Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 14 hours ago
Bath is for soaking, shower first. And add some bath salts.
StankStain@lemmy.today 14 hours ago
i thought bath salts were for smoking
roserose56@lemmy.zip 15 hours ago
Did you use hot burning water?
ignotum@lemmy.world 15 hours ago
Water doesn’t get hot enough, that’s why i usually wash plastic containers in hot frying oil
Sintinium@lemmy.zip 15 hours ago
my water is on fire what next
roserose56@lemmy.zip 14 hours ago
Use lava then, come on, use your mind!
Allero@lemmy.today 15 hours ago
Had issues getting burning water

My fingers after fried chicken
RaoulDuke25@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 hours ago
I assume you’re washing with warm to hot water?
Allero@lemmy.today 15 hours ago
Buying glass containers was a gamechanger for me.
One swoop - and it’s clean. No grease sticks, it washes even easier than ceramic plates.
Plastic is a terrible container material for greasy foods.
curiousaur@reddthat.com 10 hours ago
It’s terrible period
Allero@lemmy.today 8 hours ago
Nah, things like PLA are generally fine
razen@lemmy.world 6 hours ago
And then they fall and shatter
TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today 5 hours ago
Mine typically outlast the little snap tabs on their plastic lids.
Allero@lemmy.today 5 hours ago
Was my concern at first, but it just didn’t happen to me in my time using it, and glass looks sturdy and thick enough to survive it anyway. Didn’t test tho.
