That really was an interesting movie

The craziest thing is that it’s not based on a book. Ths cultural capital of the 90s absolutely baffles me - so many profound but original movies! For a good 7-10 years, Hollywood wasn’t Hollywood’ing

And they didn’t try to make some stupid sequel, even though it was a big money maker. Amazing!

The level of risk Hollywood is willing to take on today is very low due to streaming. There is more competition for people’s attention and money.
They would rather take an IP that they know is popular than to take a risk on something unknown.

90s is my favorite era of cinema. I love that a look of a little film grain but everything is still really clear.

We need to legalize the fuck out of cocaine and make sure it gets back into Hollywood.

He would go to jail, it would make the logistics of the program much easier.
I am actually now surprised they did not push for something like that to save money.
ch00f@lemmy.world 4 days ago
Viewership would probably drop, and the product placement embedded in the show that funded the whole program would be difficult to do in jail.

If the modern Internet has taught me anything, anything can be sponsored and embedded.
Much like today’s jail sponsor NordVPN. Ever feel like you can’t access anything because of where you live? That’s because some sites lock you in. With NordVPN, you can experience the internet the way it was meant to be by forwarding your connection to anywhere in the world. Use code ‘TRUMAN26’ for the first month free.

Jumping the shark and downsizing the operation is more realistic.
The movie was before the realityshow boom, the least realistic part is everybody being hooked up in a such static show. They would have tried different things to keep the ratings, actually him being a molester would have given a hike to the ratings, maybe also offering him to join a gang in jail, or giving him missions to kill other people.
Product placement is the least of my worries, give me any product I will shoehorn it in a jail environment.
WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 days ago
Not really since Truman would have no concept of what jail was other than what they tell him it is. They could make jail be a 24/7 infomercial that he has to perform and he would believe it because it is literally all he knows.
You’re probably right about the viewership though since a large part of the appeal seemed to be the parasocial relationship with a man who was presented as a decent and relatable guy.

They were saving it for the late season rating slump.

Didn’t work for for My Name is Earl!

There is a deleted scene in the film where they discuss replacing Truman. Basically they bring in a new “Truman”, film both of them, then the original Truman dies, and the show only follows new “Truman”.
I assume if Truman were heading down a path where he needed to be replaced they’d do something similar.
WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 4 days ago
They would actually kill him?
FrChazzz@lemmus.org 4 days ago
They do actually nearly kill him in the movie. Paul Giamatti’s character protests about this and refuses to cooperate when Ed Harris’ character wants a full-blown hurricane at sea to try and get Truman to comply
Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 4 days ago
Other people have already mentioned it but they literally raised him to be the ideal happy go lucky person.
Sure he figured it out, but there is no way he would become a sociopath with all the love and attention they gave him.
deft@lemmy.wtf 4 days ago
I think they control the ecosystem so much he couldn’t. They’d always have a cop or two on duty to stop him or keep him in line or probably just remove whatever demographic he’s targeting

Anon should probably put down the crack pipe…

Truman Show but it turns out he is anserial killer would be a fun teist story.
RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 4 days ago
It would be one of those shows where they swap the main character and never say why.
Fontasia@feddit.nl 4 days ago
Throwing to the Plan B ad read at the end was a wild choice
Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 4 days ago
I feel the actual answer is the show would have simply made sure no children were ever anywhere near Truman. They controlled every aspect of his life, after all.
LodeMike@lemmy.today 4 days ago
They also raised him. It’s not like sexual predators just appear out of nowhere.
FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 4 days ago
“Say what you like about Christof, at least he didn’t molest Truman as a kid, leading to him becoming a sexual oredator himself.”
Aneb@lemmy.world 4 days ago
Idk when I came out as gay, or in my parents eyes, a child molester. They asked if I was touched as child by a priest or family friend. Of course they were wrong, I was just born this way.
I really need to start posting on an anonymous acct
