I find it a very sad place, it’s like there’s been an economic depression there for the past 20 years, which it has since industry moved and stopped paying rates and providing jobs
Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 1 month ago
Then the artists & students and people looking for cheap housing close to the city moved in. A much more eclectic mix, and quite an interesting one. Thriving art scene and good food available very cheap (compared).
Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 1 month ago
Don’t miss out on going to the market. The fish/seafood section was AMAZING the last time I was there.
CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 1 month ago
That’s where we’re going. Also the shit shops cos I need wooden spoons.

Five breakouts today. Renaming him to Samdini.
Max doesn’t try to open doors, he just assumes he’s supposed to be everywhere and trots blithely past you

Called in sick, went back to bed. Have since had a good two or three more hours of at least dozing.
This is helping

Disappointed that today’s emoji was not the fire one, @YarraByte.

I wanted to go in today because I need to go over a spreadsheet with my manager and looking st that over teams sounds like the worst thing in the world. But I slept in and it’s now too late to head in
tombruzzo@aussie.zone 1 month ago
New shoes finally arrived. I’ve corrected my previous error and bought the shoes with the gore-tex so hopefully they’re a bit waterproof. It will be great for being a dad and riding to work

Trying to figure out what different areas are like to live in based on people’s online opinions is very challenging. The area I am looking at ranges from a really nice place to live (as long as you avoid a small problem area with housing commision flats) to an absolute hellhole where you need to sleep with one eye open and can expect to be murdered every couple of years.
Seagoon_@aussie.zone 1 month ago
I look at crime maps, public transport and facilities maps. Go visit the area in person. Look at online house sites. Looks at Google maps street view
One thing I really like about Australia is I have never heard anyone ask if a city or suburb was decent to live in. This is white people code for “are there any black or mexican people living there”
RustyRaven@aussie.zone 1 month ago
Vicmap also has the overlays for flood, bushfire etc. and I’ve also been looking at maps of the soil type in various areas (as having a garden is a major thing for me). Ballarat also has the bonus issue of a major gold mine right in town, which adds issues like underground blasting, tailings dams and possible toxic dust/water runnof, plus there are unmarked underground tunnels which occassionally lead to surprise sinkholes.
It’s quite challenging pulling all the information together. Unfortunately street view here is quite out of date for most areas - plus when the car last went through in 2010 a leaf got stuck to the camera and the entire area has the centre of the frame blocked out by that. It is on my way to work though, so I’ve been trying to drive down a different street every time to get a better feel for the area. I plan to take Mr Woof over there and spend some time walking it as well.
As far as I can tell most of the negative stuff is just prejudice from people who don’t have any connection to the area and just denegrate it because its a lower socio-economic area.

Please share your murder recovery method. I seem to be in the wrong video game.
RustyRaven@aussie.zone 1 month ago
I don’t think I can get the secret until I actually moved there, but I’m guessing it’s some sort of zombie virus spread through meth.
Whatever it is I’m sure it will be worth dying on occassion as the area has good public transport and has large house blocks which are still affordable. The great Australian dream’s not available without sacrifice these days, and giving up the avocado toast is nowhere near enough sacrifice in the current housing market. Dying every few years or giving up a kidney seem like the going rate now.
melbaboutown@aussie.zone 1 month ago
It’s so hard, yeah. Been having that problem myself.
I check out the historical news, see if people on various sites mention any trouble spots, and kind of keep a weather eye out for red flags. Unfortunately it’s easy to miss things and then you’re stuck until you can get another place.
RustyRaven@aussie.zone 1 month ago
I do have the bonus information that comes from working in emergency services, I get to see a lot of things that are going on that most people don’t, so that at least reduces the risk I’ll get stuck with the dodgy neighbour.
tombruzzo@aussie.zone 1 month ago
Spreadsheet isn’t ready yet so no painful meetings. My manager is working from home as well so I would have been doing calls over teams anyway. And it means I still lost the import lottery so I’ll be dealing with it at some point
Pilk@aussie.zone 1 month ago
After being so good for so many years, I think I’m gonna need a filling after my next checkup. Maybe too much chocolate just before bed…
melbaboutown@aussie.zone 1 month ago
No sign of the little visitor today. Feels sad and lonely but is also a massive relief. I’ve been fighting this ringworm for months and was stressing about whether he’s being cared for, so I hope he’s tucked up warm at home and eating well (hopefully with a vet visit scheduled). The magpies will be a lot safer now and there won’t be remnants to attract foxes.
I’m in bed with a hot water bottle and have been catching up on sleep. I’ve started reading again.
This is normally the weather when Melbcat would have been extra snuggly or asking me to put the heater on. Here she is in the prime spot. You snooze you lose :P

melbaboutown@aussie.zone 1 month ago
Ugh. Bad dreams.
spoiler
Dreaming about conflict with people and that Melbcat is still alive. No I am not doing well
Seagoon_@aussie.zone 1 month ago
she is alive in your heart , that is a good thing
I don’t think I’ve talked about it but I mourned terribly after my cat buddy Oscar died. I had taken him across the world with me and we were close buddies. He died of a heart attack in my arms after getting Feline cardiomyopathy from a vaccination, which was horrible for him, and me.
I basically could barely get out of bed or eat for two months.
Mourning is normal. It shows it was real. 🫂🫂🫂

So Milo has milk in it. I just wanted a caffeine free no milk drink.
melbaboutown@aussie.zone 1 month ago
I do miss Milo and Ovaltine.
They had a plant based Milo but they may have discontinued that? They discontinued Aktavite which was a favourite for me. There was a chai syrup that I would mix into hot soy milk for a chai latter but haven’t been able to find it again.
Now I drink cocoa or Cadbury’s hot chocolate though the latter is expensive and a bit too sweet. Otherwise I have peppermint tea, decaf coffee, ginger ale/lemonade, or use chocolate or vanilla Ensure as a hot drink.
Seagoon_@aussie.zone 1 month ago
Thanks for all the suggestions. 😊Miss Seagoon tells me an easy way to be dairy free is to choose vegan and I’m starting to see that may be the easiest way to choose products.
CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 1 month ago
What about a chai tea? Easy to make. Add what you want. Use the “milk” you want.

Tea review. 🍵
Twining Jasmine Green Tea. What a terrible disappointment. This tea was flat with very little fragrance of any kind, no green, no jasmine. I checked and it is many years to use by date so it’s not stale.
Would not be served at a Hobbit tea. No stars. ❌
Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 1 month ago
Twinings does rather default to the lowest common denominator - and provides nothing extreme enough to frighten people. I’ve given up getting that brand of Lapsang Souchong, which is a favorite tea of mine but a lot of people don’t like it as its so strong. The Twinings version is pale and weak and has little taste.

I had no idea they were so bad, they have a reputation for quality. 🤷♀️
