I just learned 37% of Americans fear vaccinating their dog will cause the dog to develop autism. 😐

I read a news story about a guy who died from rabies after receiving a kidney transplant. Although nobody was aware when he died, the donor of the kidney had contracted rabies after being scratched by a skunk several weeks before he died and his organs were harvested.

I got curious about how he got scratched by the skunk, but instead only found this article from August, which informed me that the U.S. had had a rabies outbreak and more deaths from rabies in the last year than in several previous years…

Not sure if people were already talking about this, and I just missed it, but it’s been a bit of a weird year.

Anyway, this is how I read the sentence informing me people are worried dogs are getting autism from vaccines.

People don’t want to give their dog heart worm/flea protection because they are worried it leads to seizures.

I had to explain why they should continue to do it so many times on Facebook. The benefits out way the risk by such a great magnitude that it should be a no-brainer.

  I think it’s that attitude with any neurodivergence or mental health related issue. You know, all the things that ~~doctors didn’t know about diagnosing~~ “just didn’t exist” in the past.
  
  Like we saw the consequences of people struggling through life, not getting a diagnosis, and not understanding why life was so challenging. For example, my dad was dyslexic and my mom very likely had ADHD, but neither was ever diagnosed.
  
  They just struggled constantly through school, had terrible self esteem, and when somebody told them to just give up and choose a different career path they just said ok, guess I’m just not cut out for this.
  
  Then I got both, and my parents were ok with acknowledging the dyslexia bc it was pretty easy to diagnose.
  
  The ADHD was a whole other story, and I was told by my own parents (who used the excuse of being not wanting me to end up like them) and teachers I was just careless and lazy over and over. I started hating school when I was like 8 and barely finished high school. When I got to college by the skin of my teeth, I found stuff that interested me, but I still struggled so much through college and grad school. Then for a very long time I believed the reason everything was so so much harder for me than my peers was bc I was just dumb.
  
  I had to wait until I was in my 30s and had my own real job and insurance to even attempt to seek help get with ADHD, and even then it took a very long time, but I’m so glad I did.
  
  Maybe if we can stop society from devolving, in a few generations we can also stop pretending that acknowledging neurodivergence and mental health in kids means you have to accept some kind of dangerous magical sorcery, instead of just understanding that people often thrive when you allow them to just be themselves, and treat them like individuals with their own individual strengths, weaknesses, and unique skills.

Fun fact: Rabies is pretty much the most-lethal disease ever. A diagnosis is an absolute death sentence, followed by an agonizing death.

Solve it with enforcement. If they have to come out over a dog issue and the fucking thing don’t have a rabies vaccination, it gets put down. No exceptions. The dog doesn’t have any religious affiliation so that argument won’t work either.

  That’s generally how it works if your dog or cat (or squirrel) bites someone. Unless you can provide proof of a current vaccination, the animal has to get tested for rabies. This involves getting a sample of brain tissue. For pet owners that seems excessive, but for someone who has seen a rabies infection first-hand, there is no animal valuable enough to skip that test

  Rabies is not tame. If you get the vaccine for it, you’re golden (near perfect efficacy, and you can even get it shortly after contracting rabies because rabies works so slowly).
  
  But as soon as you start showing symptoms, you’re dead. Rabies is able to cross the blood brain barrier, but the vaccine for it is not. Once you’re showing symptoms, the death rate is 100% (60k die from rabies annually, less than 50 have ever survived after showing symptoms).

    Yes, but I was being a bit glib, in the context of American national insanity. There is so much else evil crap going on, which is equally fatal to rabies…caribbean boat bombings, withdrawal of food aid from starving people, ICE kidnappings to foreign violent prisons, even the “advice” your own CDC is giving now.     I’m half joking, but there’s a decent bit of autism in our house, and he fits in pretty well. He gets overstimulated pretty easy, exhibits a lot of self-soothing behavior, and doesn’t take cues well at all.

Whoa! I was gonna ask which dogs would be more likely to have autism if that were possible. Instead, after some quick research it turns out there is a controversial and debated analog to autism in dogs termed CDB (canine dysfunctional behavior) that can include symptoms such as repetitive/compulsive behaviors, social challenges, heightened sensory sensitivities, and difficulty with changes in routine.

Bull terriers apparently are the breed which exhibit the most CDB-like symptoms. However, the breeds that are recommended to match with autistic humans are ones that are more predictable, gentle, calm, and friendly (e.g. labs, Golden’s, etc).

    Controversial and debated; IE, some duechebag propositioned this whole concept, and since he’s rich and white and old, it’s gotten a bit of traction, and he absolutely does think autistic folks are stupid, But! The vast majority of anyone in the field with two functioning brain cells to rub together know he’s full of shit and are working on refuting him, because the aforementioned class he’s in means he didn’t get immediately laughed out of the room or simply blatantly ignored like he should’ve been.

  Listen Doc, yesterday I tried to get my dog to drink some whiskey and get on the roof with an aluminum baseball bat during a lightening storm, so we could go Back to the Future, but he just kept running away. Clearly, whatever was in that vaccine you gave him has made him autistic.

Didn’t foresee this as a consequence to the rise of the antivax conspiracy. Sure I knew we’d be in trouble to reach herd immunity for the next epidemic/pandemic, but now we have to worry about rabbies in pets too. And what’s next? Antivax farmers refusing to vaccinate their cattle?

  No, and I’ve been giving it a lot of thought.
  
  I had a brief, fanciful idea a few years back that if everyone starts using AI that it would help increase personal education and knowledge throughout the world.
  
  That worked out as good as the feeling I had back in the mid 90’s where I said “Wow, if everyone has access to all this information, the future generations of this world are going to be fantastically intelligence, we will have starships by the time I’m old!”
  
  We might need to accept and start compensating for the hard fact that we are just complex apes and have fundamental limitations as populations. It might not get better. We might make more new things and we might create new ways of living, but we’re always going to be spiraling around our own limited cognition and our survival instincts that make us forget to think.
