Add another thing to the Google Graveyard ig.
Apparently, all YouTube Rewinds have been unlisted as of today.

Is the 2025 one just a flood of nazi propaganda?
spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
No, that was 2016
M137@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I gotta ask, is this a common thing? I’ve never seen any of that. Not that I don’t believe it exists, but I have a hard time believing it’s among the most popular topics.

go open youtube in a private tab and see how long it takes for an innocuous video to get a recommended video from the manosphere, rightwingtube, or magaworld. youtube pushes nazi shit hard. if they’re not pushing it on you, it usually means their mathematical model for determining who right wing propaganda works best on indicates you’re not a good target, in which case they’ll mostly push meaningless drivel.
youtube and youtube culture have been dying a right wing nazi death for a decade now. all the best things people were doing are on patreon and nebula now
Karjalan@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
In early first trump presidency there was a very real and concerning centrist to nazi pipeline on YouTube
schwim@piefed.zip 3 weeks ago
Why is this even mildly infuriating? Who’s that emotionally invested in a corporation and a bunch of influencers patting each other on the back?
Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
Just preserved youtube history and culture.
DreamlandLividity@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
They are just unlisted. They are preserved.
87Six@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
More like preserved out-of-touch-ness, a reminder that youtube’s been terrible for a long long time
Windex007@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
The Weezer pork and beans video was actually fucking sweet

I assumed it’s probably due to some creators becoming, or later being discovered as, “problematic” and/or some sort of brand risk. It would look more strange to unlist a few of them, so better to unlist all of them.
To be clear: This is speculation based on zero information 🙃. Just a total guess based on how things tend to go between internet culture and corporations. I’m probably wrong. It would be cool if YouTube would communicate things like this.
It’s unfortunate to see such cultural history hidden away. Though, tbh, this is probably the most that I’ve ever thought about YouTube Rewind, and I haven’t thought about it in many years.

never been happier to have only followed the grace, hannah, mamrie, tyler, hank, john, and dan + phil youtuber scene.
Gonzako@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I’m sorry mate but they actually put pineapple on pizza
P1k1e@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Why?
TachyonTele@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
Why have them? What are they?
Zorque@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Marketing videos, mostly. Ostensibly they’re original videos showcasing some of the talent and content from the previous year. The last couple of years have been particularly bland, though, as I understand it.
Tilgare@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
They shouldn’t exist because you don’t know what they are?
webp@mander.xyz 3 weeks ago
Why? They have a monopoly. They do whatever the fuck they want.
mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 3 weeks ago
But why do they want to do that, is the question
tal@lemmy.today 3 weeks ago
I don’t know what YouTube Rewinds are, but are these them?
Carnelian@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I think unlisted means they just won’t appear in search/recommended, but can still be viewed if you link directly to them
SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Oh… maybe done so the new one is the only result? That makes this a hell if a lot less of an issue.
Lightfire228@pawb.social 3 weeks ago
“Unlisted” means you can’t find any of them via search or on the creator’s page. But if you still have the URL, you can view them directly
Which includes public playlists other people have created
tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
Looks like they all eventually became mr beast
vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
Fucken Markiplier is on like half of them. Nothing against the guy just kinda funny that he’s been notable for so long, also some of those did not age well.
k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
To this day I still have no idea what it is, and I don’t wanna bother looking it up.

So they invite a select group of artists from the platform who made big gains that year to be a part of something like a YouTube holiday special.
The problem with it is corporate is so out of touch that in 2018 they invited mid-controversy Will Smith and a bunch of K-Pop stars to do the video, almost plays like their target audience is barely pubescent boys and girls. It became less about the community and more about promoting content for monetary purposes.
The YouTube Rewind videos are in the list of the most disliked videos of all time, with the 2018 Rewind being at 20 Million dislikes, surpassing “Baby Shark Dance” at just under 15 Million and “Justin Beiber - Baby” at 12 Million.
Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
That was just about the time they got rid of public downvotes, unsurprisingly
k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
You’re the best! Thank you.
OneWomanCreamTeam@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
It’s where they take every video uploaded to YouTube that year and play all of them backwards.
starlinguk@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I’ve been on YouTube from pretty much the stat and have never seen a Rewind. Do only Americans get them?
Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
YouTube whats?
pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
Many moons ago, youtube partnered with the biggest content creators on there to make a video capturing what was trending throughout the year
WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Probably like Spotify wrapped but even dumber.
NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
I don’t even know what that is.
People let google track them on youtube?
9point6@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
That’s a bit sad
They were kinda little time capsules of various corners of YouTube adjacent internet culture over time
Psythik@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
The only good thing YT Rewind was for was finding out what kind of boring bullshit channels normies watch.
UnrepententProcrastinator@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
That sounds a bit elitist tbh

See they’re running out of disk space though. Preserving history is so much less important than 58 minute video essays about [insert any banal topic].
p_consti@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Unlisting just means they’re not shown in searches, the video is still available, so storage has nothing to do with it
