- Comment on Who remembers when you needed a separate "Download Manager" to handle concurrent downloads? 8 hours ago:
I remember pulling an all-nighter to make sure my Internet stayed connected and stable long enough to download Netscape Navigator. I think it was like 18MB. Previous attempts failed, and I didn’t know of any download managers back then

IIRC, some bald eagles were found with neurological issues caused by nicotine from cigarette butts too.
- Comment on Guinness wasn't proud of this one. 1 week ago:
I don’t know about horses, but this can happen to dogs. The condition is called GDV. It happens without warning, and the only options are emergency surgery (gastropexy) or euthanasia.
PSA: A gastropexy is MUCH cheaper when done preventatively vs. on an emergency basis. If you get a puppy that is a deep-chested breed, get a gastropexy when spaying/neutering.
The emergency surgery for my senior retriever mix was $6k+ and a rough (for both of us tbh) recovery. I’ve known others who have lost their beloved dogs to GDV. It sucks
- Comment on Acciracy 1 week ago:
Sure. I was mostly just trying to answer your question and clear up some of the confusion. In all continent models, Canada and the USA are indeed on the same continent 🙂
- Comment on Acciracy 1 week ago:
Oh that was centuries ago. In the US, we’ve even divided states in a similar manner over the years. The Province of Carolina became North Carolina and South Carolina. Dakota Territory -> North and South Dakota. Virginia and… West Virginia (not sure why no “East Virginia”).
I suppose you can say it’s “wrong” on the Internet, but if you tried the six-continent model on a school test in an English-speaking country, it would be marked as incorrect.
There are also five- and I think even four- continent models I’m some cultures. The thought of any of them being “wrong” is really interesting, to me. Personally, I’ve never really thought about any of them as “right” or “wrong”, just cultural differences.
- Comment on Acciracy 1 week ago:
Most English-speaking countries teach the seven-continent model. There is no place named “America,” so when native English speakers omit “The United States of” for brevity, other native English speakers understand that they’re referring to the USA.
It seems to cause some confusion with cultures that are taught the six-continent model (in which there is a continent called “America”). I would guess that it’s because a lot of people are unaware of these cultural differences.

If this is the same story I’m thinking of, she and her partner wanted to be the first vegans to climb to the top, to show the world that vegans can do it. Coincidentally, another vegan actually did it like 1-2 days before their attempt.
- Comment on All upset over something that in the big picture means nothing? Get yourself this watch 5 weeks ago:
So, using this model as an example:
Single jewel quartz mechanism
For $300, that’s a bit of a turn-off. I’d prefer a mechanical movement — even a cheap-but-reliable Seiko NH35 movement would do.
There are some nice quartz movements that might be acceptable too, but if they don’t specify which movement it is, then it’s probably not great.
It has a sapphire crystal, which is pretty much expected at that price range (though Seiko is still a bit behind on this), so it seems kinda odd not to specify which movement is in there.
Aside from the specs, I suppose the rest comes down to build/finish quality, which is hard to gauge without seeing it in person.
- Comment on All upset over something that in the big picture means nothing? Get yourself this watch 5 weeks ago:
Personally, I’d want better specs for those prices. However, I’m more of a watch nerd than an art/design nerd. I wouldn’t know how to put a price on the art of those designs. Hopefully they’re built well.

- Comment on Attitudes 2 months ago:
I was able to pursue a career from my favorite hobby. It took a lot of hard work to get there without the usual academic qualifications (university/college degree), but once I finally got hired for a full-time position, it was a dream job for me. I would have done a lot of it for free if it didn’t cost money to live. I’m also very lucky that my hobby happens to pay well.
Since then, a bigger company acquired my employer. I still like my job (mostly), but I don’t love it yet. I’m required to delegate a lot of the work, which I used to love and take pride in, to AI. I’m gradually getting better at using AI effectively and efficiently, so maybe I can find joy in using, eventually.

In my area of the world, we have ants that are small enough to get in with either tool propping the lid open
- Comment on "No eating for free allowed! You must only watch it rot on the beach!" 2 months ago:
Sure, I understand the moral arguments, but it’s very common to have legal consequences when taking something that doesn’t belong to you — regardless of morals.
Of course it would be morally better to give everyone permission to take the bananas. It sounds like that hasn’t happened though, so it seems very simple to understand that there would be legal consequences for taking them.
How is this not obvious? Did I miss some critical detail?

I never thought I’d ever defend UK laws, but if you take something that doesn’t belong to you, isn’t it generally frowned upon in most parts of the world? This seems pretty normal to me
- Comment on Apparently, all YouTube Rewinds have been unlisted as of today. 2 months ago:
I assumed it’s probably due to some creators becoming, or later being discovered as, “problematic” and/or some sort of brand risk. It would look more strange to unlist a few of them, so better to unlist all of them.
To be clear: This is speculation based on zero information 🙃. Just a total guess based on how things tend to go between internet culture and corporations. I’m probably wrong. It would be cool if YouTube would communicate things like this.
It’s unfortunate to see such cultural history hidden away. Though, tbh, this is probably the most that I’ve ever thought about YouTube Rewind, and I haven’t thought about it in many years.

🤔 I understand this more like “Don’t practice the religion as a way to show off. For example, don’t make a YouTube/TikTok/whatever video giving a homeless man $100. Just give the guy $100 and STFU about it. Also, stop posting prayers in comment sections on social media, you look silly.”
I’m not a bible guy though, so idk

Ugh. Everything in this thread is totally feasible and probably reasonably accurate.
I miss the old days when I could love tech, and got excited about new tech. It has gotten so sleazy.
- Comment on Fresh dystopian hell from Samsung fridges with ads. 2 months ago:
Well yeah, it’s a fridge with a spacious screen and an Internet connection in the 2020s. Of course they’d capitalize on all that advertising real-estate. And of course they’d wait until after people have had them for a while. They’re unsurprisingly shameless.
I’d be curious to know what kind of data it’s collecting to optimize those ads.
- Comment on The President of the United States of America 2 months ago:
Maybe we’ll consider electing someone who isn’t a senior citizen, next time. Three terms of the two oldest presidents in US history seems like enough.
- Comment on Why do some Americans "feel ashamed" for being American even when it's not their fault? 2 months ago:
American tech companies created algorithms that happen to boost videos and news articles of fringe/extreme occurrences that take place here. The mainstream news networks also prioritize content like that, for the same reason: It’s very profitable. Boring news/content just doesn’t make much money.
People who have never visited the US seem to have a very distorted understanding of what everyday life is like here. We display a pretty embarrassing caricature of our country for the world to see.
And to make things even more embarrassing, we made our government ridiculous, and made our politics become pop culture (yet also very tribal) over the last ~15 years.
