Please correct me if I’m wrong because I might be ridiculously wrong, but isn’t it that the oxygen is the reason we’re wilting with age like plants?

Partly yea, unbound oxygen is very excitable and is capable of causing DNA dmg! But everything causes damaging your DNA! Light, heat, viral/bacterial infections, time, stress… Everything!
But you can limit the very first one with anti-oxidants, which is strictly not capable of doing anything else but binding unbound oxygen! Ripe bananas contain a bunch of them
Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Unironically, oxidative stress shortens your telomeres and therefore, your lifespan.

I happen to know multiple people who haven’t died.

Dihydrogen monoxide is like that too. 100% of the people who drink it die. And it’s even deadlier when inhaled, it only takes a relatively small amount.
Rhaedas@fedia.io 1 month ago
Of course, it's got oxygen in it.

We’re not the first organisms to alter the atmosphere and cause a mass extinction. The first ones were microorganisms and the gas they released was oxygen. We’re descended from the survivors that managed to adapt to a high-oxygen atmosphere but to this day there are many microorganisms that die if exposed to even small amounts of oxygen.

The great oxidization is what your referring to. It's pretty impressive. It caused like 90% death to all life, and then life adapted and here we are. It rusted the shit out of the planet too.

This is why antioxidants are good, right? /s
DarkCloud@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I don’t know why you’re saying \s to a literal fact. Yes age is a form of oxidation, yes that’s why anti-oxidants are said to prevent/slow aging.

I know this is a joke but it also kinda isn’t, we are all constantly dying because of oxygen we literally die of old age because our bodies kill themselves so Oxygen doesn’t kill us earlier, well that’s not entirely true it’s also because of cancer but close enough.
captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 month ago
There are chemicals that can make it so your blood stops reacting with oxygen but big pharma doesnt want you to take them and sometimes doctors even force people to take drugs to counteract them
Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 month ago
Big Pharma will.never be able to stop me from eating blueberries and getting all the anti-oxidants. 😤

Nah you gotta step up your game

When oxygen was first released during the great oxygenation event, it killed all other life on earth.

Aren’t the fact that there are other gases that we breathe in with oxygen reason we live, like how oxygen is highly reactive so breathing pure oxygen in big quantity will cause reactions in our body and kill us, and other gases (nitrogen mostly) act as a, so to speak, barrier against those reactions.

What does it mean if you make a creaking noise when you breathe? If you make a creaking noise when you breathe it means you have a rusty lung.
Rusty lung cancer can be easily treated at home with a vape pen and DW40, by filling the tank and taking deep puffs. This will clean your lungs and make you cough up all the rust.
Rusty lung cancer symptoms, red or brown mucus is common with rusty lung cancer, especially following treatment.

You must be really addicted. There are treatments that involve belts.

You only have to worry if you have iron lungs.

Oxygen makes up a full third of dihydrogen monoxide which kills thousands of people a year.
dankm@lemmy.ca 1 month ago
It’s well over a third by mass…
