Decompressing from the idea of making a call
What are you doing when you call someone, don't leave a voicemail or text, they call you back right away but you don't answer?

I was obligated to call but did not want to make the call. Now I can report back that the call was made and that there was no asnwer.

Perfect score. Social obligations fulfilled: 100%. Words spoken: 0. Emotional energy cost: 40%.

Yeah to be honest, this was in most cases the best possible result.

You technically did your job, nobody can fault you!

Calling someone else.

I’d rather get sent straight to voice mail than hang around in the limbo that “Call waiting” is.

If I indulged my terrible impulses, I’d probably be laughing to myself and saying “Yeah, how do you like it?”

If somebody doesn’t leave a message why would I call them back?
Jarix@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Alternately why bother leaving a message when they just ask you why you called when they do call back?
Then again I’m old enough to have had to use a rotary phone so that could be a factor in my personal experience

If you’re like me and old enough to have used one of those phones then I don’t understand your perspective at all. I didn’t know who called me if I missed a call back then. So I couldn’t return it. Answering machines didn’t come till much later. And then again if they didn’t leave a message I wouldn’t know so therefore wouldn’t return the call.
If someone calls me and doesn’t leave a message, or then doesn’t send a text, I assume they didn’t mean to call or that it wasn’t that important and I just let it go. Not worth my time.

Ignoring my phone because I prefer to text anyway, so you not answering was a massive relief to me. Chances are if you text instead I’ll respond, or can leave a voice mail, but honestly if I didn’t leave a message or sent a text, it wasn’t important enough/mission critical in the first place.

Driving or going to the bathroom.

If I called, it was an emergency, and I can’t answer the phone because I’m elbow-deep in emergency.
DrDystopia@lemy.lol 2 months ago
You only call people in an emergency? How do you communicate with people outside of shouting range for less important topics?
skankhunt42@lemmy.ca 2 months ago
I don’t
Nemo@slrpnk.net 2 months ago
I send them text messages if it’s not urgent.
Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 months ago
I didn’t want a talk to you in the first place but was obligsted to try.
Brkdncr@lemmy.world 2 months ago
I don’t answer calls.
EnsignWashout@startrek.website 2 months ago
Exactly. My phone is for texting and calling out. Receiving calls is an unfortunate bug.

You had your chance and lost it.

But dialing with a silenced phone?
SolidShake@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Depends on the person, an ass could pass for face id.

You’ve never seen someone put their phone in their pocket or purse, without turning off the screen first?
I’ve seen lots of people do that. A couple times I pointed out why it’s not a good idea. But people who do it, just don’t seem to care. My mother has done this exact thing to me several times. She calls me back later, when she sees that I called her, wondering what I wanted.
lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world 2 months ago
fair enough, i guess it depends on how fast you call back
lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world 2 months ago
probably moving on to the next task in my to do list. my phone is not attached to my hand
SolidShake@lemmy.world 2 months ago
I get that but even if you were to sprint away from your phone at full speed you’d still hear the ringtone and be maybe 1 foot away. I’m literal when I mean “call back right away”. Like if I’m working and I see a phone call, and I go to hit “answer” but the call ends just before. And then I call them back within 5 seconds. There’s no way your phone is on a table and you’re 10 yards away.

What kind of sociopath has their phone ringer on in 2025?
klemptor@startrek.website 2 months ago
Ringtone? My dude, the only people I know who have their ringer volume on are all in their seventies.
