So I feel pretty sure it’s probably something dead in the roof now. I called, but it doesn’t qualify as urgent, so I have to call back tomorrow. Fucking lucky I haven’t invited anyone over for tomorrow or NY. Tbh the idea of showering in the dead animal room isn’t actually what’s getting me, I’m mostly worried about the smell transferring (even a little bit) to me or my clothes. I’m very very self conscious about smells and the idea of having to walk around smelling like the grim reaper honestly makes me wonder if a sponge bath in the kitchen sink would leave me better off Now that I think about it, I’ve noticed a lot more flies around the place as well. I was actually gonna complain about that earlier, but I just assumed a few got in when I’ve had to leave the door open a few times recently to bring stuff in, etc and it was my own fault One things sure, I don’t really feel like making, or eating, dinner anymore. Oh well. At least the smell is contained to the bathroom, at least for now. There’s no vents or ducts in any other rooms. Although the laundry has a manhole, and the laundry door doesn’t stay closed, so if it starts to seep out of there, I’ll have to tape the bloody door shut or something

Um, dead possum is worse imo. The smell hangs around forever and can’t be cleaned out even when the body is removed.
Whatever the hell it is is seared into my memory now. I can’t actively smell it while I’m not near it, but i still get random little whiffs. Even while I’m outside

I had a possum or something do that… it was the worst.
Ironically I found opening the windows and doors to air the place out just created a low pressure zone that let the stink come fully out of the wall and spread through the house.
I ended up closing all windows and doors and then directing a fan at the exit point (the gap in the wall under where the heater was installed) to keep air pushing against it so it couldn’t come out.
Because I can’t use traditional air fresheners around my cat I set out dishes of white vinegar to deodorise the air. Then dabbed 1-2 drops of Nilodor on cotton balls or a tissue, put it in a paper cup, then tied a paper towel over the top.
If the hole the smell is coming from is a fan vent you can leave the fan on. If you have a manhole into a ceiling cavity you might be able to see if you can reach it with a rubbish bag covering one of those long grabbers.
Obviously don’t put yourself at risk by going to the top of the ladder or crawling into the space! It’s possible to step off a rafter and fall through the ceiling.
Not sure about the colour of the flies, I really struggle with seeing nuances in insects unless they’re glaringly obvious. Even struggle differentiating wasps and bees, but that’s a whole other problem. I’m pretty sure they’re just fat blowflies though. They buzz around a lot and either seem to be quite resilient to fly spray, or the one I have is shit There’s no window in the bathroom, just a skylight (which can’t be opened) and the extractor fan. I’ve been running that all day, but I’m not sure it does anything. In fact, it doesn’t even seem to go to a vent or anything. I shined a torch into it, and it looks like it just leads directly into the roof cavity, with no filter or ducting or anything. No clue if that’s conventional, it’s broken, or the people who installed it just wanted to save money The smell has started to spread into the hallway despite the closed door to the bathroom. There’s not much more I can do to stop the spread, though I can open the back and front door to create a cross flow if need be (not ideal because the front door has a clear view into my house from the street even with the screen door closed). Otherwise I can use windows Luckily I don’t have a cat yet, so I can be very liberal with incense and air freshener. I’m not trying to give myself lung cancer though, so I’ll be as sparing as I can while still making it bearable There is a manhole, but it’s a few rooms down from the fan. I definitely don’t feel comfortable getting in there, mostly because knowing my luck I’ll fall through the roof and snag an electrical cable or something on my way down turning myself into an air fried Baku with a light coating of mildew and generous dusting of plaster dust and paint chips. But also cause I’m shit scared of spiders, and, again, knowing my luck, shortly before I fall through the roof, I’ll get bitten by a redback, probably what will make me fall through the roof 😂 If I have a chance tomorrow, I’ll nip down to woolies and buy some glen 20 then walk across to Kmart cause I know they sell odour absorbent beads (not sure how well they work). Besides that, I think all I can do is listen to music and try to create some good vibes/not think about it, and pray somebody comes out to remove it tomorrow. I’ll probably also ask whoever comes if they can determine if there’s a nest or where they’re getting in, and then ask the LL to fix it. At this point I’m mostly worried about an infestation either already existing, or developing because of whatever’s up there (ie cockroaches or other pests) Vicks is a good idea. Might see if I can get some tomorrow as well. Unfortunately, I threw mine out because I’d had it for a couple of years and only used it once. Didn’t think it was worth bringing. But it’s been mentioned in my comm servs course that Vicks in a face mask is near essential for entering some types of homes. People with hoarding issues, etc. I’ve heard nurses/doctors use it, too, and it wouldn’t surprise me if cleaners have worked it out, too

I’m usually after the seasonal stuff like those tiny Darrel Lea “puddings” or the Santa shaped lollies if I’m totally honest. Last year I got some 45c Violet Crumble Santa’s that while were delicious, I wouldn’t buy full price!
I’ve had decent luck with hams going cheap. Christmas stuff like those fruit puddings etc also gets very cheap.

The (kinda shitty) guitar I bought went on sale for half price today 🥲🥲🥲 and I could’ve bought a better guitar plus sourced an amp from marketplace if I had just waited a couple of months. Hindsight, hey.

That does sound like something’s died in the roof cavity. I’d postpone investigating until daylight - and preferably get a professional to deal with it. So many different rooms affected.

I’m literally sitting in Optus Stadium, waiting for the BBL Scorchers v. Heat game to start. It’s definitely a spectator game.
It feels like the final hours of a One Day match where you are chasing a run rate of 6-8 per over. All game. Games only go for about 3 hours total. A little longer than an AFL game.
Love it when the Scorchers play at home coz it means we get 2 games. It’s been an action packed day today.
Look they are travelling a bit shit lately but when you pick a team, you stick with them through the wins and the losses. That’s what makes it exciting.
Ugh. There’s been a horrendous stench in the bathroom all day and I can’t for the life of me figure out where it’s coming from or how to fix it
It smells kind of like a combination of mold, rotting meat, and rotten eggs. It’s awful. Probably sewer gas I’m guessing. My bathroom and toilet are 2 separate rooms that share a wall, but I don’t believe share a wastewater line I can smell it in both, but it’s extremely strong in the bathroom, and only faint in the toilet room if the fan isn’t running. Can’t smell it while it is. It’s almost strong enough to knockout a bloody horse in the bathroom. I was thinking dry P trap, because I haven’t used the bathtub while I’ve been here, and this place I believe was vacant for a little while. I’ve tried running the taps and tipping a fair bit of water down the drains, enought o hopefully dislodge anything that could be causing the smell if it isn’t sewer gas, but no dice There’s no clothes on the floor in the bathroom or anything, and both at least appear visibly clean. I’ve tried sniffing each drain but they don’t really smell bad, they just smell like water with a little bit of “grandma’s house”/old people smell I think I’m gonna have to admit I dunno and call the landlord to get a plumber out. I’m just scared maybe I’ve unintentionally fucked something up, or it’s a dead easy fix and I get stung with the cost
Check to make sure there’s water in the toilet as well. Sometimes lack of water in the bowl can caused that.
Thankfully I think that’ll be fine. I’ve been here for a while now, and drink a lot of water, so the toilet would very rarely go more than 8 or so hours without a flush. It seems to hold water fine. I did however notice that the gap around what I assume is the sewage pipe going out the back has a big gap around it, which seems to have been stuffed with… Toilet paper? I don’t know. It’s not dripping, and doesn’t look wet or moist (or dirty), and doesn’t smell, so I doubt that’s the issue. Really fucking weird though
If you can beat it, try sniffing close to the actual drains, and see which one has the strongest smell. Also, fill up the bath/sink with some water, and observe how it’s draining, to see if it’s draining slowly. That will help narrow down the cause and you can describe it better to plumber when they visit. If none of the drains seem to be source of the smell, see if you can take a sniff around the ceiling fan. It’s possible something dies in the roof, and because ceiling fan vents out to the roof space the smell is free to waft into the bathroom. This would also be a landlord call, so they can get a pest controller to maybe get the dead thing out of ceiling, and check there’s no mouse/rat residents in the ceiling.
Thanks! I think this was actually more helpful than you realise! I climbed onto a chair and it certainly seems to be a lot stronger towards the ceiling fan. I can’t safely get right up to it (I don’t currently own a ladder… Yet another thing for the list sigh), but just based on how it was stronger closer to it than away from it, I think you may be right
I’ve gotten as close as I physically can to the drains (the shower is too small to bend or sit down in, bathtub would require getting in and lying down, and the sink I can get fairly close to but it’s got a small square basin). They all really do mostly just smell like water, a tiny dash of soap, and old people
Buy a bottle of cloudy ammonia from the supermarket. It’s very cheap. Pour a bit in each plug hole. Leave overnight. Pour water down each plug hole. Repeat if necessary.
Yuck. Already so warm, waiting for the sun washing cycle to be done so I can hang it all outside and change of bed sheets happening today too.

Normal white sugar mixed with borax should be fine for baits yeah? I have icing sugar but it’s an unopened packet someone else could use.
Try not to worry too much about one. I find the occasional one here (generally in the kitchen) and we haven’t had an infestation

Tech support complete. Basically accessing sensitive docs sent by a law firm.
Without giving too much away ol’ boy is giving a medico legal opinion on a poor young lady who has been through the wars. Family suing a doc (not the ol’ boy thankfully) completely unrelated to underlying issues.
Anyway this is discovery shit… defendants’ (the doc.) file is a GB or a 1400 pg pdf, extremely detailed entire history (which is a lot, down to everything done intra-daily). Plaintiffs’ bringing 240KB lol (shouldn’t laugh but the discrepancy is absurd).
When these guys retire or semi-retire, some of them are hit up by either the defendant or plaintiff’s lawyers depending on their history of siding with whoever. Some sell themselves to the highest bidder, others do it because it’s right, others to protect their colleagues, some pro-bono or a combination.
Sounds awful but it do be that way. And this shit drags on like you wouldn’t believe (and naturally it’s the lawyers that win).
In any case, moral of the story is record everything.
