I haven’t played Elden Ring so this basically reads like an LLM trying to continue Jabberwocky by Lewis Carrol

yea that’s a good description
it’s one of those games that you finish and have no idea what happened, the NPCs speak to you as if you were supposed to know already
it’s a good game, but to understand the story you need to be a bloody archaeologist

I have often likened Fromsoft and Bethesda in the way that while Bethesda outsources their bug fixing to the community, Fromsoft outsources their story to the community. In both cases the community adds more than there really is and acts like the developer earned the credit.

Well I’m currently playing Armored Core 6, and I gotta hand it to em, there’s basically no story whatsoever. It’s just giant robots. And it’s pretty fantastic.
IsoSpandy@lemm.ee 5 months ago
Bro, I cried for AC6’s story. What insanity Handler Walter has to go through. And how can forget buddy. What more story do you need than two bros fucking over a tyrannical megacorp?
Retrograde@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Dude hell yeah. AC6 slaps but OMG it’s hard

“FROM’s attention to world building and lore to tell the story is truly unmatched” - YouTuber in six hour long video about a bit of wall an intern level designer forgot to remove.

I like the games in spite of the dumb stuff like this. I fully recognize a lot of it is really bad design.
It is very frustrating though. Setting aside the silly NPC quests, it’s so disappointing finding some cool looking item or spell only for it to be practically useless.
The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 5 months ago
FromSoft is just min-maxing their game design build.
They put too many points into combat and level design that now all they can afford for story are some vague NPC ramblings and hints in item descriptions.
kamenlady@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Yeah, it’s almost like real life. I honestly don’t want to be in real life mood when I’m playing a game.
FreshLight@sh.itjust.works 5 months ago
How is this so damn accurate?
corus_kt@lemmy.world 5 months ago
I progressed the story too fast in one direction and 3 different npcs died forever with zero warning. Then I played the DLC, went too far exploring, and something important randomly broke before I killed a single boss. I ended up halfway in multiple storylines I didn’t know existed. Still a jolly good time but boy am I confused.
IMO ER is best played full monke with a bonk stick, ignoring all story - or full minmax so you get all the story stuff in one go.

Thank you for helping me understand what it’s like to come at these games with weakness in my mind and piss running through my veins. Now excuse me, it’s time to play Noita (I cannot sleep until I’ve been humiliated by weak enemies).
NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Specing for the bombieshart is a hassle anyway
fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 5 months ago
And then you get a game like Brigadore where I actually spent in game money to unlock game lore. Absolutely no in game benefit, it was just that well written (imo) and I realised after a bit was hinting at good equipment combos.
psmgx@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Brigador is a great example of a game that does a whole lot of good world building with just portraits and quality writing. Blowing up civilians is also fun.
rockerface@lemm.ee 5 months ago
I prefer the Fiddlecrinkle’s Glitter Missile spell anyway, it’s fair and balanced and I killed all the bosses with it without them getting even close to me

I love that a entire genre of the Internet is just shitting on things people like just cuz.
tfw_no_toiletpaper@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Why is that so accurate lmao

Elden ring is like listening to a greatest hits album. Nothing new but may be some remixes on there.
So far the dlc feels the same, hope it gets more interesting, only at rennala
Renacles@lemmy.world 5 months ago
You mean Rellana? Rennala’s sister?
TwoBeeSan@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Yes rellana.

Hey some of us vet addicted and play games like Hellpoint just to continue the digging for shitty items and lore.

Yeah that fashion is important for making bad red man look neat while they animation cancel through a wall and kill you.
The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 5 months ago
The funny thing is that only someone who has played a good amount could write this.
I love these games despite it being absolutely impossible to follow the lore without help.
Iapar@feddit.org 5 months ago
I like that uncovering the lore is a community effort. Like archeology.
It brings people together and that is something positive. And because of that I learned a bunch about our own history and myths etc.
So I hope they never stop making games that keep it vague. Gives the whole thing a detective Aspekt that I appreciate.
That doesn’t mean there is no place for games from from that have a more conventional way of storytelling.
