Can we not make joke about Monica? She got horribly treated by the public while he is the only one who should have been punished.
She is fighting bullying and she is pretty cool for that.

Monica got the worst part of it all.
RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 2 weeks ago
The penis…?
ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 2 weeks ago
Yes… but also the massive media shitshow at making her look like a giant slut who fucks her way to the top.
bus_factor@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Technically a cigar, IIRC.
SethTaylor@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
You. Principle’s office. Now
buddascrayon@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Yeah, it took me a second to realize this was another juvenile joke at her expense to make fun of Bill Clinton who has committed a whole series of much worse offenses you can take aim at without involving a woman who already got the sharp end of the media stick for far too long.
GreenShimada@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Agreed. Poor woman basically had to flee to the UK and go into hiding. She’s been surprisingly resilient, all things considered.
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
Why should he be punished? Nothing either one of them did was illegal. It was consensual private behavior that none of us should ever have heard about.
Tartas1995@discuss.tchncs.de 2 weeks ago
He was her boss and the president of the usa… considering her age too… questionable behaviour
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
So the American public has the right to know about the president’s every sexual experience?
Frankly, I don’t want to know. Especially with a pervy pedophile like Trump.
Tartas1995@discuss.tchncs.de 2 weeks ago
Wtf??? Where did you read that?
Berengaria_of_Navarre@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
They did.

Compared to her? Not at all.

I think it’s alright to hold both of them accountable for infidelity in a social sense. Clinton being the more responsible as the man in the marriage, but Monica knew he was married. I can’t see a moral argument to not hold her accountable for this as well (again, socially, not legally). They were both adults. I don’t think the age difference or power dynamic lets either of them off of the hook, even though it would make the then-President comparatively more in the wrong.
I think it’s more alright to have punished Clinton for lying (under oath, right?). Even if I don’t think it made sense to ask him about sexual relations, he still lied about it. I don’t think there’s any legal issue with what Monica did.
I’m glad she’s speaking up against bullying nowadays.
I didn’t follow each update on this situation while it was going on, so if you think I missed an important point that would change my mind, I’m open to considering it.
Tartas1995@discuss.tchncs.de 2 weeks ago
You are missing the point where a man with the most powerful position on the planet, more than twice the woman’s age, made her feel special by the attention that he gave her at 22 years of age. The human brain is not fully matured until at least 25.
Having that big of a power difference and age difference is huge.
And you missed the point where he broke his promise to his wife and she broke no promise. You don’t know what bill told her what his deal with Hillary was. So why judge her for a crime that she didn’t commit?
forkDestroyer@infosec.pub 2 weeks ago
It’s fair to say that Clinton wasn’t a good role model and broke his oath to his wife (so long as they weren’t in an open relationship, which I doubt they were).
Concerning the age difference: I think this is where we have a disagreement. Even if the brain is still developing at 22, a 22 year old is an adult. If you make a bad decision as an adult, I don’t think the excuse that your brain is still developing holds. Monica isn’t being judged for a crime (at least as far as DC law goes), but she’s being socially judged for being with a married man sexually, which we know is wrong in our culture.
DrivebyHaiku@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
The issue here is that on Monica’s side the punishment was disproportionate. She isn’t some rich, powerful person who could withdraw to her ivory tower. She was 22 and made the kind of mistake 22 year olds make and that is what she gets to be known for forever. Think about a 22 year old in your life and the resources they have at their disposal. She went back to her parents place, buried herself away from the world and tried not to commit suicide as all of media took turns making jokes about her being an easy slut. Her day to day life for decades was virtually destroyed with her being barely able to form a career or new relationships. She stopped being a person and endured a prison without a cage.
Clinton got a formalized process and quietly withdrew into absurd wealth while the media by turns gave him largely a pass for being a dog once the process of getting him out of office was done.
Whatever Gods or Devils punished Lewinski they’ve exacted their due ages ago and kicking people who have already hit the floor hard isn’t morally healthy. Nobody needs to continue to hold Lewinski accountable anymore. She served her time.
forkDestroyer@infosec.pub 2 weeks ago
You’ve made some pretty good points about how disproportionate the response has been. I agree that the proportion was definitely unfair.
Canconda@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
Neither of them should have been punished? The joke is that America lost its goddamnmotherfucking mind over this. America is the joke.
tmyakal@infosec.pub 2 weeks ago
Neither of them should’ve been punished? He was her boss, and decades older than her. He should’ve kept his pants zipped up.
AWistfulNihilist@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
DNC types get super cagey when you admit that Bill Clinton is a serial adulterer who was in an extreme power imbalance relationship with a woman in her 20’s.
I’m glad the party is willingly offering him up as a sacrifice to the republicans to get keep the Epstein probe going. Every time the GOP tries a burying tactic, they truss Bill up like a suckling pig, and I’m fine with that. Dude is and was a creep.
Canconda@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
Yea it’s called consent. Not every power imbalance is inherently coercive. Society should be punished for being such prudes… they’d probably find they like it.
OneOrTheOtherDontAskMe@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Not every power imbalance is coercive, but the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TALKING TO A 21 YEAR OLD STAFFER IS
In case you didn’t consider that one
Gross, dude
JackbyDev@programming.dev 2 weeks ago
It was the god damn president of the United States of America. That’s a fucking power imbalance if I’ve ever heard one.
AeonFelis@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
The problem is that power imbalances make it impossible to establish consent:

Remember Gary Hart? He had to drop out of politics because of a rumor of an affair.
Meanwhile… Margaret Trudeau is doing blow with the Rolling Stones at Studio 52.
Canconda@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
Yea cuz the majority of Canadians aren’t fucking prudes lmao.
