- Comment on Anon defends Michael Jackson 2 months ago:
From the source you listed (because I have heard of the magazines but didn’t look much into it ag the time) the author posits that the two books that had pictures of children were a gift from a fan, and the second he includes an inscription from Jackson discussing the joy of youth he’s seeing in the images and that he’s sad he didn’t have that kind of childhood. Which, weird, but not damning to me.
But I couldn’t find a credible source for the “showing children pornography” portion you mentioned, do you have anything for that? My impression so far has been ‘weird dude, if I knew him I still probably wouldn’t let my kids sleep over but I wouldn’t let my kid sleep over ANY adult’s house, especially not a celebrity’.

No it’s a joke and a trend from a video on tiktok. Why do people, especially here lately, jump to hate on anything ‘TikTok’ or ‘new’ from the younger generations? We all had our stupidity, shit, people STILL staple bread on trees
- Comment on what's a polite way to reject a picture with a very thankful patient who was under your care? 2 months ago:
Please and thank you don’t violate barriers. It does not allow someone into your space, you don’t have to give anything of yourself to say them, and if you’re a good person you probably mean them. A better example for what you’re looking for would be handshakes. It’s common in most western cultures at several social functions, and it can be considered rather rude to refuse one, it got a lot of folks angry during covid apparently. That’s where two parties acknowledge the social bindings that call for a physical touch establishing a mutual respect. I never miss saying a please and thank you, but best believe I’m still doing the ‘covid shrug’ when I turn down handshakes.
So, you’d tell your child that “yes, you have autonomy in this, but your feelings regarding your need for personal space matter less than your grandmother’s want for a hug” is what I’m gathering? Do you educate your mother on the child’s wants/needs? There’s a reason why people are educated that, as far as physical touch is concerned, nobody else’s feelings should be taken into account. If someone can’t love a child without hugs, then I don’t think they really understand the concept or application of love.
I’m not saying this is your case, the next bit is an extreme but important to the overall argument, I think. People have identified that exact thinking pattern in why they didn’t report sexual assault from a family member. Because they weren’t taught how to properly say no and why the right to refuse touch is important, it was that much easier to abuse them.

I dont like my picture on the internet. So I refuse all photos where possible. I have family, they take pictures, they’re aware of this and so I’m never the direct focus of the shot (you might see me in the background).
OP said they don’t want to take pictures with people, they shouldn’t have to take pictures with someone. Instead, you should be teaching your son to stand up for their boundaries, even in the face of ‘tradition’. If your kid says “I don’t like hugging grandma”, are you making them give hugs or are you encouraging them to tell people in their life, who they trust, how they feel?

I’m gonna err on the side of the journalists that Israel is actively targeting instead.
- Comment on UAW Rips 'Corporate Greed' of John Deere as Mass Layoffs Follow $43 Billion in Stock Buybacks 3 months ago:
Yeah, if the share price goes down due to change in public sentiment and buying habits, the stock buyback essentialh wasted money.
But if the price remains steady or goes up in any nominal way, the stock buy back nets them tons of cash. If steady, not tons of cash but plenty of ‘control’ of corporate direction.

Also, for what it’s worth, my family was from the south. My reunions and funerals and weddings all take place somewhere in a holler with 1 Walmart about 40 minutes down the mountain.
My uncle once said, and my mother agreed, in relation to gay men “I wish they’d put em all on an island somewhere, they’d be happier that way”.
But I wasn’t lucky enough to know my grandpa as a man of wisdom. He’d said enough stupid shit, or abided it in his home when his children begged for '“Barack Houssein O’bummer’s” birth certificate. He had a dog named Blackie, that I called Blackie because I wouldn’t dare say it’s real name if someone asked.
What was good in them did all truly disappear in front of me day by day from that point. Hell, I actually believed the ‘states rights’ reason for the civil war until I was at least 14 or so. Crazy what stupid can breed

I think he’s saying that “southerners call northerners Yankees, but they don’t know that EVERYONE in the US is a Yankee once the confederacy lost, because not a single confederate soldier remained, reclaiming those states as Yankee territory and any citizen therein is a Yankee. Anyone who disagrees doesn’t remember the lesson Ol’ Sherman taught em”
- Comment on Hades 2 will likely be in early access until 2025, with first big update to add new enemies, maps and features 5 months ago:
Feel free, I think it’ll be a great game when you check back in.
I’m a big Hades 1 fan, and played that game in it’s early state as well. Hades 2’s early access feels roughly 90% or more complete, it’s missing pictures for some items (placeholders for now), some character portraits of some of the lesser-interacted-with NPCs. I think there will be another weapon because there’s a slot for it, and there’s seemingly some more boss content. Gameplay, basically at 100%
So if you’re likely to finish and not check back in, definitely wait because the game should be in pristine condition by then, with it being this polished already. Love this studio, love this game

We shit on ‘upselling’ all the time. If you cleaned those pages, pressed them back and touched up the spine of the book, sure. But I’d be annoyed too if there was a 500% markup on a resale of used material

I like the changes, those wins felt very cheap and circumstantial. It was super fun, but the changes definitely make it ‘feel’ better. I love this dev team for listening to the community
- Comment on ASUS breaks your ROG Ally if you don't pay $200 for warranty repairs: SCAMMING COMPANY! 6 months ago:
I was just refuting the bit that it’s not better off the paper. By all the measures above, it’s not “meh” better. The steamdeck could drastically improve by taking some notes in what the Ally does well.
I agree though that Asus isn’t a company I choose to do business with first, they just had the best product for what I was looking for.

Own both
Ease of use - Ally Graphical capabilities - Ally Battery usage - Steam Deck (because less graphical capabilities) Gaming platforms/launcher availability - Ally Customization and layout - Steam Deck, and it ain’t even close.
I love my Ally and my wife loves my Steam Deck. But the Ally is better in all the ways above. I will say the Steam deck is easier to open up for repairs, but not by much

My wife’s best friend has been banned a couple times and is waiting to appeal her tinder ban again.
Although often justifiable based on the ways these guys have acted/spoke to her, it’s usually because she’s super ruthless in her response. A guy got mad she wasn’t interested in just being a booth call after she said she’s there for dates too, said she was after a free meal (paying hadn’t come up yet, and she always pays for herself unless a guy insists) and so she tore into him. And she’s brutal. Another had ghosted her after rescheduling on the date twice and saying stuff came up and that he’s busy (days after the fact, no check in or nothing) and so she told him that’s some horse shit and that he’s a little bitch that needs to get his life in order if he’s gonna stand somebody up twice after begging for a second chance.
She definitely could be nicer sometimes, but from what I’ve read from her it’s no different than how I see a lot of dudes talk on there, I think those guys just got their feelings hurt more than standard tinder girls do.

Well, because it’s the community for HackerNews, an already established site with a user base and an active discussion. Although I’d love to have the discussions here, linking to the overall larger community there would lead to better debate/discussion just from the shear number or users and available opinions/expertise.
Someday I hope we have as committed a user base and then HackerNews can link to it’s Lemmy counterpart

Oh that I couldn’t answer. They probably are referencing a study where those options were listed. A lot of practicing Christians I know aren’t even positive what they declare so they just put down non-denominational, I’m assuming ‘Christian’ was another good catch-all term that nabbed anyone who had a general belief in Christ but no organized practice of that belief.

Shit in my comment I forgot all about Adventists and pentecostal. Oh jeez, let’s hope the singular group that makes it to heaven takes mercy on my failure to include them.
- Comment on How is woke a religion? 1 year ago:
Oh American christianity is something different as a whole.
I’ll give my best summary in as few words as I can during my lunch.
Christianity is an Abrahamic faith with its roots in catholicism. When Martin Luther, a catholic from Germany, wrote a large 95 point thesis detailing his problems with catholicism and how the church had been warped from its intention, this lead to whay most modern Americans would call Lutheranism.
This reformation of the church that started with Martin Luther is known as the Protestant Reformation, protestants being anyone who believed in Christ but not in the orthodox or catholic belief set and rites.
The separation of that faith and the pursuit to practice it openly (sometimes even if it was MORE restrictive than the existing systems) led to the exodus of religious groups to America. This is where some Americans get the idea that “america was founded on Christianity and religious freedom”, as these were protestants who were escaping religious persecution for rejecting mainline catholicism.
Some time down the line, I don’t know the history of this part, the general term for anyone believing in christ but not catholicism (some going as far as saying lutheranism is catholic-lite as they still practiced communion and most protestants don’t recognize communion or any of the ‘rites’ as those are things they see as placed on top of religion by man and not by God) was just left at Christians.
For all intents and purposes, in the US, Christian mostly means Protestant, methodist, Lutheran, Baptist, Southern Baptist (they’re separate, I was raised Southern Baptist, they get pissy about being lumped in), calvinist, and non-denominational (people who don’t claim a ‘branch’ but worship christ in a way not easily or intentionally not tied to a singular rhetoric.
Please ask more questions and I’ll try my best. Having been born to a Southern Baptist family, it’s a topic I love to discuss and learn more on. I’m not religious though, so hopefully none of my stuff comes off disrespectful, just happens to be a family trade I can’t quite put down.
