My friend had something like this in his basement and it was hilarous. That was like 20 years ago. Now today I was looking at possibly having a small bathroom put in our basement and realized exactly why it was built like that for the first time! You cant have the toilet lower than the sewage pipes, otherwise you need to put in a pump system which if it fails at some point could mean more issues. So they probably used the height to avoid needing that.

I want to put a half bath in the basement.

Yep. Need a poop blender pump thing to resolve the drain issue…

If I do go through with it I will be informing people it is a number 1 toilet only! I used to host poker games and the basement was the best spot. The only problem was no bathroom so they would go upstairs and risk waking my wife and now kids by doing so. I wanted it for that convenience basically and also for myself when I hang out down there. Definitely do not want it to be for number 2’s for the reasons you stated. If you need to do that then upstairs it is!

I bought a house that the previous owners had installed a lower level washroom, sink, and shower. Shit went in a tank, pump moved it up about 12 feet to city sewage.

I’m sure it was fine but I never used the toilet because I didn’t want to deal with it failing. We did use the shower and sink though.

My house has only one bathroom so ive been tempted to put in a second. The only real option is the basement, but the sewer pipe leaves through the wall about 3’ off the floor. There’s a couple options with pumps, but a lot of negative talk online about it just not being reliable.

Raising the floor seems silly, especially raising it that much, but probably cheaper and more reliable.

Plus I assume this was an old stairway that was walled off in a remodel

    -Walk up the stairs.

    -Sit down, do your business.

-Stand up, walk down one step.

    -Walk on the ledge.

-Peek your head around the corner.

-Yell while holding up your pants awkwardly.

    We’re outta toilet paper!!!

In the basement, maybe? Could be either doing it this way or blend and pump the shit up to the sewer pipe.

That’s the same issue we have in the basement with that wash basin in the laundry room. It is located at 1.1m instead of the usual 0.9m height.

As a tall person, that sounds lovely! My basement sink just has a pump under it

Whoever set standard sink height is a monster that hates tall people.

Well, the sink is not really in big use. We drain the condenser tank of the dryer, and occasionally I take and dump water for cleaning the floor there.

There’s no plumbing, it’s where they store the shit. When it gets full, they add another step.

The neighbor’s toilet. Saves space to stack ‘em like this. As long as they line it up right, flushing this one drops right into the bowl of the next one.
