Should street racers who accidentally kill people really go to prison?

There was a 13-year-old who was killed after he got run over by a street racer. He got 7 years. Then there was this 18-year-old who was street racing in his Mustang and killed a mom and her infant daughter, so he got 24 years. Do you think these guys should really go to prison? It was a mistake.

Racing wasn’t a mistake. Being reckless wasn’t a mistake. Taking a heavy metal object and propelling it at unsafe speeds where there are pedestrians is a choice. If you want to race, go to a track or somewhere without innocent people standing around. No one agreed to be in that movie.

Yes, they really should go to prison, for really reals, if they really kill, maim, or otherwise injure another person or damage property.

If they don’t hurt or kill anyone, and don’t damage property, you might convince me their vehicle and license should be confiscated, and they should be banned from driving for life.

Yes. They chose to use a vehicle in a dangerous manner and killed someone. There was no mistake. That was a choice. They didn’t accidentally turn up at a race and mistakenly push the peddle. That was intentional. Prison in general is a terrible way of punishment but don’t downplay their choice as mistake.

I don’t know how to explain to you that people should go to prison for killing people by doing something dangerous and illegal. They didn’t intend to kill people but they were recklessly disregarding people’s safety. Street racing is illegal for a reason, it isn’t some arbitrary rule.

No, it was not a mistake. It was a choice to race on a street and not on a track where crashes and collisions aren’t likely to kill anyone but the driver.

Throw the motherfuckin’ book at anyone street racing. Stupid reckless children. Utterly irresponsible.

Manslaughter is a crime for a reason. Extreme purposeful negligence that caused a literal death is a decision they made, and you shouldn’t be ideally rehabilitated to avoid the situation happening again.

In many parts of the world, murder requires intent while manslaughter does not.

  By that definition shooting into a crowd with a gun would not qualify for murder unless the perpetrator had the intention to kill (dolus directus). Other criteria are malice aforethought and dolus eventualis.

It wasn’t a mistake. There was a deliberate choice to do street racing. Frankly, 7 and 12 years for a murder are disgustingly short punishments.

Well, if you assume two things, yes.

First, that prison serves a purpose beyond punishment. Second, that there’s no better option to achieve that purpose.

Without those assumptions, then you get different answers because if punishment is the only purpose of it, there’s way less expensive and societally detrimental ways to punish someone. And, if there’s no better options to achieve other goals, then you have to wonder if the goals are worthwhile.

Yes. But the religious nuts in my country were asking for death. Take a life, lose your life sort of thing. Apparently because they dont take alcohol, and they believe alcohol is the leading cause of vehicle manslaughter, theyre ok with it. I dont agree with them because im not a religious nut.
