It should have been my sister’s birthday today. Snuck up on me this year. I was fine and then yesterday found myself sobbing out of nowhere. It’s been nearly ten years but that makes no difference. I still talk to her in my head all the time. I wish I lived closer to her kids.

    Fuck cancer.

Smell a rose and raise a glass today for her? 🥂

I think my brain is fried from looking at far too many houses in new estates that all look the same. It’s depressing how they are all just plonked onto the block with no consideration for the angle of the sun, and without basic things like eaves to create some shading to the north.

It’s also annoying that the agents don’t put all the basic information in the listing, especially when they have things like the house plan available from the sales listing already. Plus basic information like whether there is air conditioning in the whole house or only one room is often missing.

I have found a small selection of the least terrible houses to go and inspect next week. It’s frustrating that they are pretty much all 4 bedroom 2 bathroom places - I don’t need that many rooms, but the step below that is tiny units with no space and no yard. The middle section of the market barely exists. I still have my fingers crossed for one of the few older places around, but 90% of the market seems to be the cookie cutter new estate places.

    source
    • Catfish@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Totally agree about the middle not existing. We’ve ended up with something with the right number of rooms but a bit smaller than wanted, and a massive need to remove grey. But as an ex-rental it’s in way better shape than most.

    • Seagoon_@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

the lying by REAs is phenomenal, trying to make us believe that these places are special or not crap

      source
      • Catfish@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I’ve no idea how they can show some of the places I’ve seen over the years with a straight face. The new minimum standards look great on paper but do Jack without active enforcement and much bigger fines.

After experimentation with my adhd meds, I’ve concluded the following:

I have been taking double the amount required. For 5 years. Insane anxiety which has led to significant social isolation. I’ve lost friends, and countless other opportunities that could have altered my life in a positive way.

    5.fucking.years.

Im very happy that I no longer have the anxiety. It’s been a week since I’ve reduced the dose and there haven’t been any negatives.

Same focus, same drive and motivation.

I was handed a bottle of pills and told to figure it out.

    Lame.

    source
    • imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s also possible that the dose you originally needed has changed over time as you have built structures and rituals to manage better (disclaimer: not a doctor; anti-disclaimer: the doctors know bugger all about brain chemistry anyway). Its amazing that you can lower the dose and get the same benefit without those side effects!

It sucks that you were left to figure it out on your own, but you are doing amazing. And the next five years will be even better.

and yeah - phantom anxiety is a thing. The difference is being able to look at it and go “ha, that’s anxiety, what’s that doing there?”

      source
      • Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

That’s really kind of you to say :) I’m glad the dose is lower now. Apart from the anxiety, my body is far less tense, my mind is somewhat clearer and I feel more relaxed which was the whole point of the medication to begin with!

The phantom anxiety thing is the weirdest feeling: my body is anticipating anxiety but nothing happens. It’s like it’s bracing for it in expectation but then it’s just calm. A few weeks of re-training should hopefully bring me back to some kind of normality. I’ve never had anxiety issues as an adult before, so it was definitely strange. I just assumed it was the price to pay for having the kind of focus I haven’t had since I was around 12 years old.

Here’s hoping the next 5 will be great, and thanks again :)

      told to figure it out

Yeah that’s fucked. Glad you sorted it out.

      source
      • Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Same here man. Be good to go gigging again without having an insane level of anxiety.

        source
    • SituationCake@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I’m horrified by this. Prescribed medication without a starting dose, follow up appointments? Advice on what upper limit is?Told to ‘figure it out’? What the hell?! Is this normal for adhd or was it just a shit doctor? It sounds like medical incompetence to me, and you’re just lucky things didn’t end up worse. I’m glad you have found balance now, but I would be furious.

      source
      • Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Absolutely. The full ramifications haven’t really hit home, I’m just happy the endless anxiety I couldn’t trace back is gone. I’m almost 100% sure this made my migraines worse as my body was tense the whole time I was awake.

        source
    • tombruzzo@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I’m glad you got it sorted out, and it sucks you weren’t given any support. You’re not supposed to be the medication expert

        source
    • LowExperience2368@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Wow that’s so shit :( I’m sorry you had to put up with those side effects for so long.

It sucks how many psychiatrists don’t do their due diligence, and give their patients a schedule 8 med and say go on your merry way.

I have accepted that my apartment will stay feral for another couple of weeks until the workload (and election uncertainty) settles and I can stop working crazy hours. I am stopped work for today, poured a little glass of bubbly (happy birthday big sis) and am chilling with some lo-fi on the speakers.

Food + clean clothes + clean me is all I need to do for a bit.

Went to a child’s birthday party this afternoon and had a bit of fun. We played a game where a donut was threaded onto a rope and dangled above our heads and we had to eat it with no hands in a race. My fat ass came first. They were gluten free donuts and I almost choked on the damned thing 😂

My gosh, I don’t get why people are so hung up about Acknowledgments of Country. Every single university class or meeting has had one. I don’t see why it’s a big deal. It is just a statement that acknowledges that we are on Aboriginal land as a sign of respect. I can see how people see it as tokenistic, but I think a) it doesn’t have to happen at every single gathering and b) it is the least we can do, considering many Aboriginal people had violent atrocities committed against them, and many communities are the way they are now because of things brought about by settler-colonials.

    • Catfish@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Broadly my feeling. It’s used too often, especially the more wordy versions. Actual Ceremonial occasions like Graduation, absolutely. Every class just makes it into meaningless jibber. I could support plaques along the lines of public halls often having a Monarch portrait on display.

      • Taleya@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I’ve seen it used on in-work meetings…that’s just midnless performance at that point.

I filled up at one of the local petrol stations today. They still have pump attendants and are the only place I’ve seen do it.

It’s great they still have those roles. It’s often high school kids and is a chance for them to start working without going to one of the fast food places. There needs to be more actual first steps on the career ladder jobs like that around.

I looked at the elector count from the AEC because a friend said her electorate was won by .something percent in the last election, and I wanted to know how many votes that was.

But then I wonder, how many of the 350,000 ish people in my age range do I know? There’s the six degrees of separation theory where it’s likely people are connected through chains of acquaintances consisting of five intermediaries. There seems to be a loneliness epidemic going on where people are finding it difficult to make friends, but maybe in some way, we are all mutuals?

Good news flash! The daschund called Valerie that was lost on kangaroo island for over 500 days has been found! Little Valerie defied all expectations and has survived in the wild for all that time, what a champ. She will now be reunited with her owners.

    • Bottom_racer@aussie.zone ⁨5⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Doesn’t surpise me that it survived considering what they were initially bred for.

I’ve been bitten by 3 over the years and I was just sitting there not interacting with them.

They look cute but I’m not going up to one to pat it.

it is a nice story though.

      Well done Val.

My aunt used to have dachshunds. Tough little buggers and excellent hunting dogs, with a built in snap crackle pop kill drive for rats, rabbits and snakes. No, this survival story doesn’t surprise me at all either. I saw the abc article, and she’s a shorthair with good legs and not fat. Show-bred ones are a bit fragile in the back and some have leg and eye issues, but a healthy young one can survive a LOT.

Ticking off a lot more than I expected. One med appt done, off to go look at shower chairs, plumber coming in on Monday to fix ridiculous leak that makes the kitchen a constant slip zone, next med appt sorted, fixed my mum’s app access to medical things, getting the routine and timing down with the eyedrops, sending regular updates to family…

Realising I need to get some work done later this evening and on Sunday though because there’s a lot due all at once and I can’t work full days over here so better to chip away at things here and there.

    Medical, tmi

My case is majorly being got on because my phosphates are so low that they’re a risk to my heart and they’ve dropped further. If I don’t take the supplements I’ll end up in hospital on an iv. I mistrust the fuck out of hospitals after some of my experiences so the aim is to avoid that. But the supplements I was given contain artificial sweeteners which are not being tolerated. Are you fucking serious. I just want to get better (or improve in as far as it’s possible) but feels like every measure is backfiring for me. And it sounds like a nothingburger or being precious but I’m already not in good shape. This intolerance causes fluid loss I can’t afford… I will not elaborate how… and it adds to the abdominal pain and nausea that already make it so difficult to stay hydrated and nourished. For these reasons I don’t believe I’ll be able to take as much of this supplement as needed or for as long as needed. I’m going to be bringing this up with my dietitian in 2 days and my gp on Thursday. (This stuff was prescribed by a random doctor over telehealth who I never met before.) l should probably also ask for a note to be added to my files (both with everyone dealing with this and at the pharmacy) because I keep being prescribed medication I can’t tolerate and it’s fucking with my ability to comply. ___

    Garden

Oh the pumpkins aren’t looking good. They had to take a back seat to my health for a while and the aphids have half killed them… The ants have ferried them to the nearby plant and the population exploded enough to kill many leaves. I saw a ladybug on one of the less affected plants and gently transferred it to one loaded with aphids but the skiver flew off. I needed to get back in to Melbcat (who is freshly home from the vet) so I didn’t even bother with soapy water. I just crushed them to death by scrubbing with the palms of my hands then rinsed them under the garden tap and headed back inside to wash properly with soap. ___

Melbcat has had her solensia plus the vitamin b and her vaccine. I’m also going to have to brush her teeth at least every second day to slow the buildup (which probably won’t come off with brushing). There are other products I’ve been recommended to look into and I’m buying the special tiny cat toothbrush in the hope it’s easier to get in her mouth.
