Eyyyyy. Looks like I get to vote on 3 May as well! But not in the Australian elections… in the Tropical Soup ones instead - which I’m not eligible to vote for from overseas. I get to vote hours before I leave! What luck.

Not like it makes a difference in a place that is a de facto one party state but hey…

One of my rental applications has been passed to the owner to look at, giving me a sudden case of FOMO. What if I accept a place and could have got something better?! I haven’t even looked at the place yet and I’m already having second thoughts. Hopefully the other place I applied for will come through for me first, it looks about 9.5/10 on my wish list instead of 7-8 ish.

    source
    • Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone ⁨3⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I don’t know what your experience has been like up until this point, but the market as awful for renters.

Maybe go have a look. You wouldn’t want to miss out on something and end up waiting ages for another one.

      source
      • RustyRaven@aussie.zone ⁨3⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

I’m definitely going to have a look. I’d also rather have a certain place to live than hold out for perfection and end up homeless. But I also don’t want to just grab the first thing available and end up somewhere that I don’t feel happy.

I do have a couple of months up my sleeve, so it will probably end up being about how I feel when I see it in person. There is always that element you can’t really tell untill you are there - something to do with the way light falls and air flows and whether you can see sky when you look out the window.

I got a Liberal party email in my inbox this morning. Clicked ‘modify preferences’ and noticed some of the things they’re tracking:
    Image

    source
    • Pilk@aussie.zone ⁨3⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

      👀

This is actually super interesting. Consider screenshotting it all and send a tip to the Guardian. I’m sure the Libs aren’t the only ones using these predictive analytics stuff though.

This is why political patties want your email and phone number – so they can add you to a database and enrich it with data scraped from profiling platforms, data brokers, ethnicity predictors and other commercial data sources.

      It’s spooky and feels wrong.

      source
      • DolphinLundgrin@aussie.zone ⁨3⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Yeah, that was first thought actually. Thought I’d consult the DT hivemind first though 😊

An annoying thing about political emails is they’re exempt from regular opt-in and spam laws so you pretty much just have to block them. Very interesting what they’re tracking here though

      source
      • Duenan@aussie.zone ⁨3⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

        So annoying.

I reported one of those Trumpets of Patriots ads and was told they were exempt from complaints because they were political no matter how awful and targeting minorities

It really made me angry how they were allowed to get away with saying such awful things and lying.

Another rental application in. Unfortunately the inspection is today & I can’t go because of a dental appointment. But it looks perfect for me in the photos, hopefully I can be considered and get a different inspection time. The place does have too many yuccas. I’m not sure if the excessive green of the lawn is photoshop or if the previous owner did some serious watering before selling to make it look nice but I’ll be surprised if it is not dead and yellow in real life. But the house layout is great, there is a sliding door I can put a dog door insert in and an area that looks like it would be perfect to put some vegies in without much effort. So fingers crossed again on tihs one.

The other one I put an application in looks like it might be ok, but there are a lot of maybes that you can’t see in the (out of date) pictures that could make it unsuitable too, so I’m not bothering with the crossed fingers for that one.

      source
      • RustyRaven@aussie.zone ⁨3⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Yeah, the trunks on those are massive and look like they are damaging the fence. Who knows what the roots are getting into. In another 10-15 years the small one that’s been put in against the house will be causing some serious damage too.

So a heads up to anyone who has a Harmony universal remote - they’ve decided that come may you can no longer update them. As in you can no longer program them at all. They’re useless.

I’m pretty sure that’s a violation of consumer law given they’re deliberately crippling a hardware device that you own…

    Dental bullshit

I let the dental receptionist know due to a constantly recurring tooth infection I needed enough antibiotics to last until my appointment in just under a month. Script gets sent directly to pharmacy without letting me speak to the dentist - go to pick it up and it’s only 5 days worth. I only realised on pickup so there wasn’t enough time to call them. I’m going to be ringing them in the morning and then exploring my other options if need be but already know this is going to be a clusterfuck

    source
    • RustyRaven@aussie.zone ⁨3⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

You might have to keep going back to them, and it may not be their fault (although they should have told you when you made the request). When I had the finger infection the doctor said new govt. regulations mean they are not allowed to order a repeat on antibiotics, even if they know you are going to need more than one pack.

      source
      • melbaboutown@aussie.zone ⁨3⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Yeah, I’m keenly aware of antibiotic stewardship 😣

I wasn’t aware of the new guidelines so fingers crossed that’s the only issue. I’m hoping that I might be able to get a pack each 5 days without a fight…

This isn’t ideal for me either. But unfortunately due to being immunocompromised and having already had a root canal the infection roars right back every time I finish. Starts spreading into my jaw and neck.

I’m just trying to contain it until I can get seen so I don’t end up in hospital with sepsis.

I don’t know if you can still do this but it’s worth a try, if you have a regular GP ask them for antibiotics. That’s what I did when I had abscesses before I got my wisdom teeth out.

      source
      • melbaboutown@aussie.zone ⁨3⁩ ⁨weeks⁩ ago

Yeah, I’ll definitely be hitting them up again. I have a telehealth tomorrow so can ask if I get nowhere with the dentist.

Just a bit worried about getting a months worth

Yesterday’s Scary Emails I Didn’t Want To Look At And Felt Like Shutting Off The World Over were looked at this am (frog, swallow, etc). They were not as bad as expected. Just need to get one document signed by supervisor who I’m meeting on Thursday.

Work, otoh, has my crank level dialled right up today. Clashing with some poor assumptions and lack of communication (imo) around the scope of this job. I’m used to writing my own quotes for these kinds of things and having full control over managing client expectations including reinterpreting their own terribly written scope. Now I’m spending much much more time than I expected on this… well, it’s not my fault or problem at this point, it’ll take what it does to meet the scope as directed, and if the company bears a loss on it that’s up to them to be tighter about quoting 😇

I can’t wait to get back to my usual role because I still resent this side of the job… Luckily this is maybe the second time I’ve had to do it in nearly a year.

too much coffee and a really long and pointless wall of text about men and healthcare - a case study on my father

My dad hasn’t been able to sleep properly for the past few weeks. He went to the GP, who gave him Belsomra. This made my mum mad, because dad probably drinks three coffees a day, including at night sometimes, and has a glass of wine probably every night. Also is a workaholic. Works Monday to Saturday, probably at least 60 hours a week. Always has to be doing something, unless he’s knocked out because of sleep. I wish I had that work ethic. He also watches the TV with the light on for some reason. I think and hope it’s just a sleep hygiene thing. I called him today and he told me that he took two melatonin tablets that my mum got from iHerb when I was having difficulties falling asleep myself (probably due to poor sleep hygiene). Each tablet has 300mg of melatonin. The usual dosage is 200mg. So he’s taken 3x the optimal dose. He was also supposed to follow up with the GP about his blood test results, probably the first one he’s ever done in his life. I’m suspecting he has low iron, because he’s not a huge meat eater, and there wouldn’t be a good absorption rate with the amount of coffee he drinks. My mum was concerned, so we got her Vitamin D tablets, that look like the melatonin ones, and swapped them out. Bit unethical due to the use of deception, but a fun way to potentially see the placebo effect in action. It absolutely shits me how many men don’t give a crap about their health. Maybe because I have had health education and value my health, I care about this stuff. I don’t exercise enough or have amazing nutrition habits (I find it difficult to eat three meals a day), but if something’s up physically, I will go to the GP if I feel it’s necessary. Perhaps I’m a borderline hypochondriac. Women tend to care more, I’ve observed, but this is a generalisation. Considering my dad’s friend’s father just passed away unexpectedly, probably from a lifestyle related condition, it goes to show how generational help-seeking behaviours are. It sucks how my dad’s attitude is, “If I drop dead, I drop dead.” I think it’s the same with accessing mental healthcare as well, although that is a LOT more stigmatised. My dad says the “woke generation” is too soft and doesn’t want to work, but I know that if I ever raise a child, I might do a better job at validating their emotions, and recognising acting out as being a bad person, rather than someone in need of regulation. I don’t blame him, because he never got the education and the grounding about mental health stuff. Maybe I could talk to his HR people and ask them if they can do a session about mental health stuff. ___

    You know what really sucks?

When you’re a certain level of chronically ill/disabled you have a lot of time on your hands. But then you’re too unwell to actually do anything of substance with it, or even concentrate enough for learning >:( It’s not restful or easy at all and neither is it fruitful.
