Also moths
Comment on I'm realizing I might drink too much soda lol
db2@lemmy.world 1 day agoIt’s not a terrible idea, the oils can go rancid.

Not in walnuts, no.
db2@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Yes in walnuts, yes. I just tossed a bag not long ago for that reason.
Sludgehammer@lemmy.world 1 day ago
But it takes like a year or so.
lemmyman@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Look at this guy, eating a whole bag of walnuts in only a year.
MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 1 day ago
Like, in tropical climate? My mom (farmer) dries them, fresh from the tree, in the heating room for a month or two, before they can even be demoulded. Can then be kept at least a year.

This! Nuts belong in the fridge.
ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 1 day ago
Instructions unclear, nuts stuck to ice cream, send help.
SourDragon@lemmy.world 1 day ago
My fiery dragon breath might help with that. Hold still! 🔥🐲
SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 1 day ago
No! Bad dragon! You’ll burn their nuts! And the salad!
M137@lemmy.today 1 day ago
Your freezer is way too cold if stuff can get stuck to ice cream.
FishFace@piefed.social 1 day ago
You have to eat nuts pretty slowly for this to be a problem in my experience. I have had nuts go rancid but they were really old. It’s like sauces - they say “keep refrigerated” on the bottle but if you use them consistently it’s better not to crowd the fridge/keep space for higher priority things.
whoisearth@lemmy.ca 1 day ago
Who leaves nuts around long enough for them to go rancid?
Fedizen@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Trees
jaybone@lemmy.zip 1 day ago
Last time I invite the Trees over.
M137@lemmy.today 1 day ago
If you find a deal for some that can easily happen. I fucking love nuts but it’s easy to get tired of them after eating one kind every day for a while, it’s a good idea to put them in the freezer until you get a craving again.
whoisearth@lemmy.ca 1 day ago
I just bought like 2 pounds of nuts from bulk barn. They’ll be gone in a couple of weeks lol
GratefullyGodless@lemmy.world 1 day ago
You know you can get your hands on mixed nuts, right?
GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Better pack OP into the fridge too, then.
cadekat@pawb.social 1 day ago
Huh, I thought oils went rancid because of oxygen? I didn’t think cold slowed that process for oils very much.
GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 1 day ago
Cold slows many chemical reactions, including this one. Nuts will last even longer in the freezer.
Removing them from an oxygen environment will also slow the reaction.
ivanafterall@lemmy.world 1 day ago
This is why I use the vacuum on my nuts.
gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org 17 hours ago
i think there was a law that 10°C temperature difference cuts the reaction rate of biochemistry in half.
Fmstrat@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Not all nuts, just oily ones like walnuts.
M137@lemmy.today 1 day ago
Heh, oily nuts.
Fedizen@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Shelled nuts belong in the fridge and unshelled ones outside.
