Time to prep and cook is the most expensive part

Cook as if feeding an army. Freeze extra servings if you can. Saves me a lot of time both in cooking and the cleaning.

They are absurdly cheap. Probably the cheapest things in every grocery store.

Yes, but depending on what you buy. If you stay regional, seasonal and somewhat on the boring side, veggies are incredibly cheap. Get a sack of potatoes, onions and carrots and you have a lot you can work with for relatively cheap.

When I was piss broke I got fat as fuck. Cheap food is 99% insanely processed carbs. Fills ya up, but it absolutely destroys your body.

Pet peeve of mine nowadays when I hear someone give a low income person shit for being fat… “Hurr durr looks like they can afford to eat!” Fuck you!

    Um… /rant lol.

You know nothing forces you to eat when you’re feeling hungry? The body is capable of sustaining itself off its fat stores, that’s what they’re for.

Yes, cheap food might be carb heavy and less satiating than expensive fresh veggies. But at the end of the day cheap food wasn’t the reason you got fat, your inability to deal with being hungry was

I don’t think you know what you’re talking about. Simply not eating isn’t a healthy way to lose weight. Simply eating less quantity of food that already isn’t nutritionally dense in the first place can also lead to a variety of issues and deficiencies.

The weight gain associated with eating cheap, hyper processed foods is only the most visible consequence. Most obese people actually suffer from malnutrition. Eating isn’t as simple as calories in and out, so simply advising people to eat less is not only ignorant, but it can also be dangerous. Not to mention you sound like you’re not being very empathetic to the person you decided to argue with.

Correct, but alas, I -like most people- am not a fucking robot. Our behavior is influenced heavily by our chemistry, and while we have the ability consciously go against what the entirety of our species’ evolution is compelling us to do, we tend not. Cuz that’s literally how we’re wired.

Tolerating the sensation of even moderate hunger is agonizing over long periods - if the choice is between that and getting fat, I’m getting fat.

    For me it was depression.

Side note: in general don’t comment on peoples’ bodies regardless of intention

I love people taking about my body. Don’t make assumptions for everyone. Telling a friend they look great can be a huge confidence builder.

I mean I like comments on my body in a sex context, but not otherwise. So I just communicate that when relevant. I still stand by avoiding body comments in general, unless stated otherwise.

Poorest people (in developed countries) are usually pretty fat

    • aburrito@sh.itjust.works ⁨2⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

The actual poorest people right now are dying from disease and healthcare negligence or exposure to extreme weather, without much time or reliable food to get fat

For me it’s the stress induced appetite loss. Got diet counseling at my well visit but Even the doc had to admit that my bmi staying >18 is more important than veggies. I’ll absolutely murder some well seasoned veggies on a good day but some days I eat like 10 zebra cakes but nothing else because they’re the only thing that spark my appetite enough to actually put in my mouth.

As a side note, I think the fitness peeps are right that ultimately weight loss / gain is Calories-In/Calories-Out but the part they’re ignoring is stress-related appetite changes. When my body is stressed my appetite just drops. It’s not a conscious control thing like with an eating disorder I just get nauseous all the time and everything starts tasting like sand. I’m like one of those kids with cancer where the nurses just let them eat cake and ice cream and milkshakes all the time because it’s the only way to keep calories going in. It doesn’t make the weight loss healthy at all, in fact it’s way more immediately dangerous than being overweight. Being overweight will kill you over the course of about a decade. If I accidentally drop 40lb again I could die this year.
